What Is 4k Blu Ray?

All of these titles come with a 4K disc as well as a standard 1080p Blu-ray copy. To watch the 4K version, you need a 4K TV and a 4K Blu-ray player such as the Sony UBP-X800. All 4K discs also contain HDR (high dynamic range) information and when viewed on a compatible HDR TV will look better than standard Blu-ray.
4K movies don’t have to be all about explosions and spaceships, and this Korean thriller is a great showcase for the grittier side of cinema. The film offers shades of Old Boy as well as previous The Host Bong Joon-ho – both in terms of a somber color palette and themes of isolation and family. It’s as fun as it is addictive.
Russian Ark is one of the first “tracking shots in disguise film” and is full of scenery. 1917 joins Russian Ark as a technical masterclass in this filmmaking technique, even though the story essentially shows two soldiers running from point A to point B. The centerpiece is a sequence of is set in a ruined city with flares flying overhead (ch. 13), which serves as an excellent test of TV comparison levels.
Apple Tv 4k 2022 Review: Faster, Better And Lower Priced
Martin Scorsese’s The Irish may have created hype at the 2020 Oscars (but no actual awards), but the movie helped remind us why we love his movies. Casino may be one of the director’s lesser-known pictures, but it boasts cool visuals and a blistering performance by an excellent cast. The 4K update offers lesser-known HDR effects, especially in the neon canyons of Las Vegas, with an image that is much cleaner than other recent re-releases like in The Shining or Black Hawk Down.
In our sound testing labs, we have used Black Hawk Down as a touchstone for many years, so we are excited about the possibility of a 4K/Dolby Atmos version. And you know what? That was all we could hope for. Of course, it’s still a grainy movie, but the picture is improved in many ways, including the addition of some subtle HDR effects. But the most impressive is the audio mixing – this video proves why Dolby Atmos should be renamed “helicopter effect channel”. The sounds of Somali markets surround you as Black Hawks full of guards fly overhead. This record is a new reference.
It’s one of only two animated movies on this list, but Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is something on its own. You’ve probably seen superhero origin stories or other animated movies before, but you’ve undoubtedly never witnessed anything like this. It looks like a comic, but the weirdest comic you’ve ever seen. There’s HDR … and then there’s this movie. Forget everything you know about sequels made 30 years after the original. Blade Runner 2049 is a fantastic update that actually improves on the first movie. This beautifully shot work of art was created to be displayed on a 4K UHD TV. Of all the movies on this list, if you’re a fan of sci-fi, this is a must-buy disc. You’ll need a powerful home theater or a good pair of headphones for this movie – because you’ll want to play it
Uhd Blu Ray Kritik
When it comes to feminist revenge movies masquerading as macho action movies, it doesn’t come much bigger, louder, or funnier than Mad Max: Fury Road. There’s no real story or even much dialogue: it’s like a two-hour roller coaster ride with the promise of redemption at the end.
The HDR effects range from subtle to disreputable (especially when it comes to the “guy with the flamethrower”), but hopefully they improve what is already a well shot and directed action movie.
Not as bright looking as the other videos here. But despite the muted color palette, the images are clear and the video holds the 4K resolution in a way that most videos can’t. Add in the unbearable suspense and a great soundtrack and you have an instant home theater classic. When it comes to visual storytelling, Dunkirk is a new benchmark.
The poster child for what 4K movies can do, The Revenant is one of the most beautiful movies we’ve ever seen. Image quality is flawless, and the expanded color palette and dynamic range are impressive. Put it on the biggest screen you can afford and turn up the volume!

If there’s one title that stands out from the other 4K releases lately, it’s BBC Planet Earth II. Shot first in 4K and featuring HDR effects, the latest installment in the series has all the great content you’ve come to expect from the award-winning team behind the original and Lifetime. And of course, the narrator is David Attenborough.
From the opening scene of a sloth swimming among the mangroves to the later macro shots of ants eating tadpoles, the photos sometimes take your breath away. If you want to show off your TV’s ability to deliver color and detail, this is the board.
A beautifully crafted film both visually and story-wise, Wonder Woman is the superhero movie we need to have on this list. Special effects are used subtly, at least until the end of the movie, while HDR gives scenes like the Lasso of Truth interrogation of Steve Trevor a real boost. Yes, some scenes suffer from film grain – including, oddly enough, the CGI opening sequence – but overall, this is a source that story you need in your collection.
There’s something the Mission Impossible series has been missing over the years. And no, I don’t mean 4K HDR – Mission Impossible 1, 2, and Rogue Nation were released in 4K. The missing word is “fun”, and Mission Impossible: Fallout is full of it.
Ps5 4k Blu Ray Player Review: Good Enough
From the first minutes, you will see the iconic self-destruct message and the thrilling parachute sequence during a thunderstorm. The movie’s 4K image looks clean, and the HDR effects serve the story, not surprisingly.
Yes Robert Downey Jr. he seems like he’d rather be anywhere else, but of the three Avengers movies so far, this one is the most engaging and the most emotional. If you saw it in the cinema, it is worth seeing at home in HDR, because it is something simple
These days, Marvel movies are a dime a dozen, but Black Panther is no cookie cutter, slapstick, CGI festival. He has something to say and he does it in a way that is funny and visually appealing. The world of Black Panther is filled with real-life characters and visual scenery – it won Oscars for costumes and production design. RIP Chadwick Boseman.
If there’s one record that will make you shake your head in wonder at how good 4K movies look, it’s The Greatest Showman. It offers exceptional picture quality and accurately assessed HDR effects. The story can be a little strange, but that is forgivable as a way to put some very catchy songs. There were times when Hugh Jackman’s quirky make-up and slick trans-Pacific accent got in the way of the show. But what is this scene? This UHD 4K Blu-ray is one of the best reasons to buy a 4K TV.
Lg C2 Oled Tv Review: An Incredible Experience
Put aside the somewhat exciting story and silly heroics and see the eighth film in the series for what it is: a good-looking popcorn movie. Like Blade Runner 2049, The Last Jedi builds on some amazing set pieces, including the battle in the throne room (which can be seen in HDR) and the final Battle of Crait. While all Star Wars movies are now available in 4K, this is the first.
Does The Shape of Water deserve an Oscar? Everyone has an opinion, but this movie is probably better than anything director Guillermo Del Toro has done since Pan’s Labyrinth. This is a fascinating and dangerous film unlike anything this great man has done before. With its romantic tones and Parisian vibe, it reads like a love letter to director Jean-Pierre Jeunet (who accidentally accused Del Toro of stealing a scene from Delicatessen). Like most fairy tales, The Shape of Water has moments of startling violence and some genuine tenderness.
