Update Unlimited Mobile Wifi Router Review – Honest reviews of German internet companies and how to choose the best for your area (and save money).
Too long to read? Here’s my choice: Go with Telecom or *PYUR as a Telecom Reseller to get the best price.
Update Unlimited Mobile Wifi Router Review
Germany is ranked among the poorest countries when it comes to the source of internet speed. There can be issues with getting fast internet access in remote rural areas, but all cities in Germany have good and unlimited internet access.

Telecom owns most of the network infrastructure and has made bad decisions in the past such as not investing in new fiber optic connections early enough. Usually the fiber cable goes only to the main point on the street and the last distance of the house is covered by copper cables which have a small bandwidth.
The German broadband market is not very competitive. Telecom still has the majority share with more than 35%, followed by Vodafone and 1&1 source.
Internet service providers in Germany often bundle Internet access in packages with mobile phones or landlines. Make sure you choose the package without Festnetz if you don’t need a landline and want to get a cheaper price.
All *1&1 contracts listed here include one or several SIM cards so you can use the internet at home and the internet on your phone with one contract.

You get the cheapest price if you sign up for a minimum 2-year contract. That’s it
. In this case, you will benefit from a reduced monthly fee for the first 6 or 12 months. You can still pay monthly though. Internet contracts can move with you to a new address if the same provider is available at the new address.
Use *Check24 to register with any of the above internet service providers. Check24 automatically calculates the total cost of each contract in a very transparent way. An online auto-scheduler sends you a message when the contract expires and helps you switch to another cheaper contract.
However, I strongly recommend not ordering directly from the supplier but using the comparison site *check24 instead. This has several advantages:

1. Step: Enter your postal code or city, street and house number in the form on the *check24 website to check availability and prices between different Internet service providers.
Step 5: Wait for the technician to repair the line. This can take up to 4 weeks.
You can go directly to internet service provider websites such as Telecom or *Vodafone, but this may not get you the best price.
A technician must come to your home if there was no previous connection of this type (DSL, fiber or cable) at your address. It usually takes several weeks to get an appointment. A technician needs access to an outlet in your home and a general switch in the basement.

At my home in Berlin-Neukölln we used a *Vodafone 50MB cable connection. Low and irregular speeds were more or less reliable until the second half of 2021 when we had an error per day. Vodafone support is also not very helpful. I switched to Telecom in 2022 because of this, and so did some of my colleagues who had similar experiences.
My 100MB Telecom DSL line is working fine so far. The technician was on time to install the line and was very helpful.
We used a *Vodafone 25MB DSL line in a workshop I shared with 2 other people in Berlin-Neukölln. The line goes offline several times a year and the internet speed is not good once more than one person is online at the same time.
Own The Cable Modem: #1 Tip On Best Internet
At work in Berlin-Mitte we used Telecom DSL. We have downtime several times a year when the entire block goes offline for a day. We switched to a fiber connection and haven’t had any problems since.
1&1 has mixed reviews. 1&1 uses telephone communication lines. Please note that these reviews do not necessarily reflect conditions in your area. 1&1 dependency can be great when you live. 1&1 offers a 30-day money back guarantee source.
* O2 has worse reviews than 1&1 but is also the cheapest provider on the list.
I recommend asking your neighbor what internet service provider they use and what their experience has been. Reliability and internet speed may vary by provider and by location.

According to this internet speed test, the fastest internet providers in Germany rated for speed at the time of writing are:
That said, your network options depend on which service providers are available at your address. Use Check24 to find out.
Fiber/Glasser can be faster if you own the entire connection to your site. In this case, you won’t suffer from slowdowns in the evening when other people in your building go online and watch movies. Please note that Vodafone support also talks about fiber when they mean a shared fiber connection. The fiber connection is not shared if it is a connection called FTTH (fiber to the home). Vodafone and Deutsche Glasfaser offer unshared fiber in some areas.
Internet upload and download speeds are often not guaranteed by the service provider. If your apartment building’s connection is overloaded, you won’t get full speed with cable or DSL connections. Cable connections in particular are known to slow down once everyone in your house starts watching Netflix in the evening.
Google Fiber Review: As Good As Gig Internet Gets
It seems like cable beats DSL in terms of speed in the German source. The situation is more ambiguous as to which of the DSL providers is the fastest. Some say Vodafone is the source, others say Telecom is the fastest source of DSL providers. Ask your neighbors what service provider they use because the quality of service provider infrastructure varies by location.
* Deutsche Glassfacer has tariffs for 300 Mb / s to 1000 Mb / s high-speed internet from 25.- Euro per month for the first year. Click on it
O2 has DSL plans from 10MB to 250MB with a *1 month minimum lead time. Make sure to select this
You can save money by buying your own router. Internet service providers usually rent a Wifi router for several euros per month. It is cheaper in the long run to own a wifi router yourself.
What’s The Difference Between A Modem And A Router?
I recommend the Fritz Box router from the German company AVM. The Fritz box is compatible with most DSL, cable and fiber connections. You can configure your router in a few clicks and there are many instructions on the web. On the downside, ISPs have limited support if you’re running your own router.
A picture of my old setup: a Fritz Box router connected to a Vodafone modem. The wifi on the Vodafone box is disabled when I run my WLAN through the Fritz Box.
LTE is mobile internet, the same one you probably use on your phone. LTE network means no technician comes to your home, so setup is completely painless. You get a sim card and a wifi router, that’s it. Read this guide if you want to get internet on your phone.
This is the same method used for internet on your phone except that the LTE location is often associated with your address. You can usually request to change location within 24 hours. LTE network is an option if you have to change address frequently.

The downside of the LTE network is that the amount of data is limited per month. This means that the Internet stops working, becomes very slow or incurs additional charges once you reach the data limit as defined in your contract. LTE may not be available in all areas.
Your options: major service providers like Telecom or cheap retailers like *PYUR. Prices range from 14.- Euro per month for a basic DSL connection to 70.- Euro per month for Performance 1000 MB/s lines. I do not recommend Vodafone because of the experience I had with this service provider.
