For the second year running, Samsung has released three models of its latest Galaxy S flagship. You’ve got the Galaxy S20, Galaxy S20+ and Galaxy S20 Ultra to choose from this year, and for the first time, the Plus model isn’t the best deal. And unfortunately, both the Galaxy S20 and S20+ miss out on the new 108MP main camera and periscope zoom camera we’ll find on the Galaxy S20 Ultra, making them a more modest upgrade than last year’s Galaxy S10 and Galaxy S10+.

That’s not to say the Galaxy S20 and S20+ aren’t lacking in new features – they have larger displays that run at 120Hz refresh rates, a 64MP zoom camera that offers 30x digital zoom, and 8K video recording. A 12-megapixel camera with larger pixels for better low-light photos, larger batteries (4000 mAh and 4500 mAh respectively), super-fast 25W charging and the latest software. In most countries, these phones also offer 5G connectivity as standard.

On paper, the Galaxy S20+ has all the makings of a well-rounded flagship, but how does it fare in real life? This is the question I will answer in this review.
Where the Galaxy Z Flip brings a new (but classic) new form factor to Samsung’s smartphone lineup, the Galaxy S20 series has traditionally been Samsung’s flagship. Well, at least when you see it from the front. On the back, you can no longer place the cameras in the center of the frame – they are now vertically aligned in the upper left corner. It’s a change Samsung made to its flagships last year with the Galaxy Note 10 and Note 10+, and it’s now making its way to the company’s main flagship line.
It’s also good to see that Samsung hasn’t put the volume and power buttons on the left side of the phone like it did on the Galaxy Note 10 and Note 10+. It’s great for lefties, but feels awkward for a righty like me. Of course, in an ideal world, smartphone manufacturers would make compatible options for both left- and right-handed users, but since we don’t live in that ideal world, all buttons on the right are a more attractive solution.
As expected, the Galaxy S20+ feels very premium. It has Gorilla Glass 6 on the front, Gorilla Glass 5 on the back and an aluminum frame. And despite the 6.7-inch screen, the Galaxy S20+ doesn’t feel too ugly in the hand because the bezels around the screen are shaved. The S20+ is the perfect size for the three Galaxy S20 models and is perfect for those who want a large screen and a phone that can be easily used with one hand when the occasion arises.

The Galaxy S20 series brings a major new feature/upgrade to the display: 120Hz refresh rate. As I mentioned earlier, a 120Hz display makes a huge difference to the user experience. Because the screen refreshes faster, animations look faster and smoother, as does scrolling, and the phone feels faster than all previous Galaxy flagships when you’re jumping in and out of apps, browsing your social media. like
Seriously, once you switch to 120Hz, you can’t go back to 60Hz screens. Everything from the Galaxy S10+ to the mid-range Galaxy A71 is relatively slow because the display on these phones doesn’t refresh as quickly as it does on the Galaxy S20/S20+/S20 Ultra. Yes, you cannot use 120 Hz
At the same time the maximum (3400×1440) resolution, but for most people the full HD+ resolution will be more than enough.
However, not everyone likes this restriction. And we get it: You don’t want to buy a $1,000 phone and not use its screen at its best. But we also understand that Samsung may have battery life issues. Samsung has thought about using both at the same time and may introduce this option in the future, but we may have to wait until the Galaxy Note 20 before that happens.

The screen also has a 240Hz touchscreen polling rate, which means the screen is very responsive to your touch. This gives you an edge over those who play on a phone with a 60Hz screen with a low response rate in competitive games.
It doesn’t run at 120Hz refresh rate because the extreme frame rate option in its graphics settings is grayed out on the Galaxy S20+. But since it’s available on the S10+, it should only be a matter of time before developers include it for the S20 series as well.
I should also mention that the phone goes back to 60Hz when the phone temperature is above 40C. And the phone heats up a lot for some reason, though I’m not sure if it’s a problem with the Exynos and Snapdragon variants or just the former. The phone runs at 60Hz even when you’re using apps like the camera and Google Maps and when the battery charge drops to 5%. All good, but I hope there is a way to disable the switch at 60hz when the temperature rises.
OK, the high refresh rate is great, but what about the overall display quality? Well, do I have to ask you? This is Samsung’s flagship, so the screen is exceptional, with high brightness levels, bright colors (with the option to switch to more natural tones) and very wide viewing angles. HDR is supported, and the HDR content you’ll find on YouTube and Netflix is excellent. The edges of the display are also less curved this time around and practically feels like a flat screen. This will please those who aren’t die-hard fans of Samsung offering only curved displays on its flagships for the past couple of years.

The Galaxy S20+ (and S20 and S20 Ultra) comes with the same ultrasonic fingerprint sensor that we saw on the Galaxy S10 and Galaxy Note 10. And last year it was Samsung’s best in-display fingerprint solution. , not this year. The ultrasound reader is adequate and most of you may not have any complaints. But it’s not very fast – sometimes you have to hold your finger in the detection area for a long time for it to work.
Sometimes it tells you to completely cover the fingerprint sensor even when you think you already do. The main concern is the not-so-consistent performance of the fingerprint sensor. The in-display optical fingerprint sensors on Samsung’s 2020 Galaxy A smartphones are noticeably faster, so in my opinion, fingerprint recognition on Samsung’s new flagship phones is a less than perfect experience.
Facial recognition is an alternative, especially when combined with the wake-up gesture, it works well most of the time. It’s even more accurate thanks to the option to add an alternate face introduced in One UI 2.0, which means you can register your face twice, reducing the chance the phone won’t recognize you.
Let me be clear: the main camera on the Galaxy S20+ is not an upgrade that Samsung is making. In fact, when you look at pictures taken with the Galaxy S10+ and Galaxy S20+ on the respective phone’s screen, you’ll be hard-pressed to notice any significant differences. At night, you’ll see less noise in the Galaxy S20+’s photos, especially in night mode, but the new camera sensor doesn’t capture as much light as the older sensor on the Galaxy S10+.

The thing is, even though the Galaxy S20+’s 12MP camera sensor has a larger pixel size, it also has a narrower aperture. While the Galaxy S10 and Note 10’s cameras have an f/1.5 aperture, the S20+’s camera has an f1/.8 aperture, so its larger pixel size is somewhat negated in practice. Galaxy S20+ produces less noise in low light conditions. It also doesn’t clear as much detail as the 2019 flagship, although you’ll definitely notice this by zooming in on the monitor.
And hey, just because the Galaxy S20+ doesn’t offer a significant upgrade over the Galaxy S10+ in terms of camera performance doesn’t mean it’s not better. Less noise in low light photos
