Update Tech For Him Review – For me, a new book has only one thing. The stiff bindings and crisp pages always feel good in my hands, so I wasn’t sure I’d be interested in an e-reading device until I tried Barnes & Noble’s Nook ($259).
My experience with the corner varies from absolute excitement when the device arrives to times when I want to throw it out the window. The initial setup of the device was so easy that the first night I owned it, I was able to set up an account, buy a book, and read in the corner. I don’t like that it freezes on me when I’m trying to read a Little Miss Techie bedtime story, or setting up the e-reader software to take my purchased books to other devices proves tricky, useless, but now that I’ve taken it apart and plugged it into my corner, the world is good and I’m really happy about it.

When this item arrived, it came in a thick plastic bag. The design and packaging looks nice, just like what I expect from an Apple store. However, I didn’t want to open the case for fear of ruining the whole thing, so I tasked my tech dad with opening the case while watching him nervously, 1) warning him not to break this beautiful museum-like file, and 2) hoping it didn’t fall around the corner. He didn’t, so I plugged it in and immediately went to the Barnes & Noble website to set up my new device.

Setting up a nook account is a simple two-step process that involves 1) creating an account or logging in with a B&N account, 2) entering a credit card number to pay before the payment is made 3) purchasing books. right It’s that easy!
The nook’s minimalist design focuses on reading, and it’s easy to use. It has a 6-inch screen that displays the text and illustrations of the book, with a color touch screen underneath for navigation. Easy-to-use touchscreen functions like the iPhone in that selections are made without applying pressure. The touch screen appears by pressing “n” below the text display and allows the user to use buttons such as:
Arrows on either side of the screen make it easy to turn pages. There is a high setting and a low setting, making it easy to change pages depending on how you get your corners.
The Nook has 2 GB of internal memory and can store 1500 books. There’s also room for a microSD card ($12.95-$79.95) to expand your eBook library. The MicroSD card slot is located under the back cover, next to the battery.

It’s 3G wireless, so wherever you have a wireless connection, you’re instantly connected. This is especially useful for browsing and purchasing new content on the go. Because your credit card information is stored on your Barnes & Noble account, you can search for eBooks and purchase new titles for instant access. For those traveling abroad, please note that 3G WiFi is only available in the United States. Wifi elsewhere will allow you to connect to the internet, but you can’t actually buy new content if you’re outside the US.
The Nook’s battery life is dependent on lighting conditions, as the screen automatically adjusts contrast based on the lighting you’re in and whether your 3G wireless network is active or offline. In testing, the nook’s battery lasted 2 full days, but when the wifi was turned off, the battery lasted 10 days.
I have over a million ebooks on my must-read list, and counting, and I’ve found many ebooks on my must-read list. Suddenly, I wished my new Perfection was an e-book and dreamed of reading the entire Twilight Saga for $33.20. If you find yourself in desperate need of a new book, Barnes & Noble works with publishers to make new titles available for pre-order as e-Books. When a publisher releases these books, you can search, find, and reserve the eBook for automatic download the day it becomes available, without having to go to the bookstore to buy the new edition.
Children’s books, such as Miss Tech’s favorite Magic Tree House series, are available in e-book format for elementary school ages and above. I love that we can read Jack and Annie’s latest adventure, Leprechaun of Late Winter ($8.47), for less than the hard retail price, while the old MTH is $3.99, the same as the paperback. Since we love Beverly Cleary’s Ralph books about cute motorcycle riding on mice, I immediately downloaded the second book in the series – Ralph S. Mouse ($3.99) – for our bedtime reading.

Unfortunately, there are only 4 books suitable for ages 3-5, so if you’re looking to read aloud to your little one on a long flight, it’s best to stock up on your favorite books rather than relying on downloads.
I wish the children’s titles were more searchable. Barnes & Noble does a good job of sorting them by genre, and if you scroll down the bottom left corner, you can sort them by age group, but the site looks poor compared to other online bookstores.
You can also buy e-magazines and electronic newspapers to read in the corner. There are many digital newspapers to choose from, including all the major newspapers such as the Wall Street Journal, Financial Times and International Herald Tribune, but they don’t come cheap. For example, the current issue of The Washington Post sells for $0.75 on newsstands, but an e-monthly subscription costs $11.99/month. As a Washington Post subscriber, that seems like a lot, and I can’t see the paper giving up on me. I like that if I consider subscribing, I can try each e-newsletter for free for 14 days.
The e-journal selection is much more limited, with only 11 journals to choose from as of this writing. Subscriptions and current issues of The New Yorker, Harvard Business Review, PC Magazine, Foreign Affairs, Reason, National Review, The Nation, Guideposts, The Scientist, Christian Science Monitor, and Wilson Quarterly are now available. I wish I could set up an e-alert when the nook has an e-subscription for InStyle, Bon Appetit, or Organic Gardening. Then I might be interested in reading my glossy magazine in my corner. The magazine also offers a 14-day free trial.

The Nook offers a “Lend Me” feature, a way to share your favorite eBooks with friends and family. Eligible eBooks (those with the LendMe logo on the bottom of the book cover) can be borrowed once, for up to 14 days, by going to your library and entering the person’s email address to read on their PC or Nook. If you borrow a book through LendMe, you cannot read the title until the person “borrows” your book. The title will be available again after 14 days, or if someone reads it sooner and “returns” it to you. LendMe is not yet available for iPhone, Mac or Blackberry.
One of the advantages of the nook is the ability to download and install eReader software so purchased books can be read on other devices, including Macs, PCs, iPhones, iPod Touches and Blackberries. The idea that my books could be accessed from any of my devices at any time was very appealing.
As easy as setting up the Nook is, I’m having trouble showing purchased books on my Mac and iPhone, even though I’ve entered my username and password to access my account on other devices.
On my Mac, I followed the step-by-step instructions to install the software correctly. I open Apps, then open the Barnes & Noble e-reader. From there, I go to the “File” menu and click “Open”, where I should see a menu called “E-Books”. The eBook doesn’t show up in my menu, and there’s no other way to access it because all the options are grayed out.

I then learned from the nook software team that I needed to manually download an eBook from the B&N website to my desktop. After that, I continued to have problems because the ebook was not showing up in my menu options, as I complained about above. I noticed that after loading the eBook software on my Mac, the eBooks don’t automatically appear as folders. I created a folder and dragged the downloaded eBook from “My Library” into the folder. I then followed the instructions to access them by dragging and dropping them onto the icons on the desktop.
