Samsung’s flagship can get all the attention, but you wouldn’t be the biggest smartphone maker on the planet without the best of the grand to put in the latest handset.
That’s where the Samsung Galaxy A50 comes in, and it’s amazing. At first glance, it looks like the Galaxy S10, but inside it offers a fairly fast experience without exaggerating the performance chart. It’s an absolute steal at £310, and worth considering if the S and Note ranges are too expensive for you.

The Galaxy A series is very, very confusing. All you need to know is that the Galaxy A50 is currently the second best in the lineup, just behind the A70. It will be the third when the A80 launches later this month. This makes it better than the A10, A20e and A40, in general.

What this translates to in reality is a 6.4in device that looks similar to the Samsung Galaxy S10 but will be cut down on the inside. The 2.3GHz octa-core Exynos 9610 processor, which powers the phone, is roughly the same as the Snapdragon 675 that powers the Galaxy A70. The phone is powered by 4GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage.
Impressively, for the price, the Samsung Galaxy A50 packs a triple camera setup on the back, with a depth sensor and a 25-megapixel main snapper with an ultra-wide lens. The A50 is also equipped with Samsung’s usual Super AMOLED screen, which is impressive when competitors in the price bracket often opt for cheaper IPS displays. Doubly so when it also includes an on-screen fingerprint reader.
So what’s the harm? Well, quite enough £310 do not know. It’s actually cheaper than other Samsung smartphone offerings, so it’s the closest competition from other manufacturers.
First up, there’s our favorite mid-ranger, the Google Pixel 3a. A cut-down version of Google’s flagship, this version is a bit slower, less impressive built and drops some features to come at £399, but has been selling for around £350. On a similar note, the P30 Lite is a cut-down version of Huawei’s P30 series and costs £329.

Alternatively, the mid-range outfit has its flagship, the Xiaomi Pocophone F1. It’s a handset that can cost just £329 despite having Qualcomm’s fastest mobile processor of 2018. Finally, there’s the Nokia 8.1, which started at £380 but is now cheaper.
The competition is quite strong, but the Samsung Galaxy A50 has started to owe a lot to the Galaxy S10. This means there’s almost no internals to speak of, although this version appears to have a notch back for the front camera. Here, however, it is more than a notchlet – a small indent at the top of the phone.
Like the S10, there’s a small chin on the bottom of the phone, but it’s only noticeable because there’s no bezel to speak of on the other side. The back is slightly curved, and it’s plastic instead of glass, which should be more durable. It’s still the kind of handset you want to protect with some kind, mind.
Most interestingly for a handset of this price, the fingerprint reader is built into the screen, which means that it is not visible on the handset. Press your thumb on the screen, and the phone unlocks – maybe a hair slower than usual, but still a nice feature at this price.

In terms of other features, as always Samsung does well. Expandable storage? Check: MicroSD cards up to 512GB are supported. Headphone Jack? current and accurate. Dual SIM? Injih sir. The only two downers I can find are that it is not waterproof and does not support wireless charging, but you can’t have everything for this price.
If there’s one thing Samsung is known for with phones, it’s display quality. And this Super AMOLED screen does not disappoint – this time you are looking at a 6.4-inch panel with a resolution of 2,340 x 1,080.
The screen displays 100% of the sRGB spectrum and, in basic screen color mode, can render colors accurately. The other modes – Photo, Movie and Adaptive – are all a bit too lively, but you can’t say you’re not given a choice.
Being AMOLED, the contrast is perfect, and the brightness is also not bad, with a maximum luminance of 560cd / m2 in automatic mode (although it is closed at 350cd / m2 if you set the maximum brightness manually, maybe because of the battery. )

In short, the screen is as good as you can hope for the price – thanks to the addition of a fingerprint reader on the screen, in fact.
Before I answer that question, a quick recap. The Samsung Galaxy A50 is powered by a 2.3GHz Exynos 9610 processor, coupled with 4GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage. In daily use, it feels smooth, unlocks quickly and jumps between apps with ease. But how does it become a benchmark?
With one obvious exception, everything is overkill. The Samsung Galaxy A50 beats everything else in the price bracket (amusingly, including the £60-plus Galaxy A70), but not enough of a margin to make it very clear.
With that exception: the £329 Xiaomi Pocophone F1 wipes the floor with everything at this price point. The chip used in last year’s Samsung Galaxy S9 in the US is not a huge surprise, but if you want the most bang for your buck, it’s pretty clear what you need to do.

It’s the same story when it comes to graphics grunt, although the Galaxy A50’s price is pretty bad, falling behind the Pixel 3a and the Snapdragon-powered Nokia 8.1. The Pocophone F1 is definitely the clear winner.
But the Samsung Galaxy A50 has one big ace up, and that’s battery life. Our video didn’t last long enough to finish, so it was 21 hours and 21 minutes before the 4,000mAh cell finally died. Only the Galaxy A70 extra 500mAh beats it, where it managed 25 hours and 22 minutes.
The Samsung Galaxy A50 treats us to not one, not two, but three rear cameras. The main camera is 25 megapixels, f / 1.7 supported by eight megapixels ultra-wide and a depth sensor of five megapixels, f / 2.2. The telephoto zoom is certainly nice, but given the very low specs for the price, I might as well ask for the moon on a stick.
That makes it suitable for the £329 Huawei P30 Lite triple camera array (48 megapixel, f / 1.8 with an eight megapixel wide lens and a two megapixel depth sensor). And while the Samsung Galaxy A50 looks great from a distance, when you zoom in, it’s clear that the Huawei P30 Lite has the edge.
Samsung Galaxy A50 Review: Finally, A Reasonable Samsung Mid Ranger
That’s not to say the Galaxy A50 is bad by any means. And given Huawei’s uncertain Android future, you might consider losing a little loyalty as the price to pay.
In low-light indoor shots, the camera fares better, with both delivering images with detailed, accurate colors, and low noise. Good work, both, although Huawei again has a slight edge.
For video, the Galaxy A50 can shoot Full HD at 30fps. If you want 4K or 60fps (not both at the same time, mind you), you’ll have to pay an extra £60 on the Galaxy A70. That said, video quality is pretty good and image stabilization seems solid enough for shaky hands.
The front-facing selfie camera also deserves a shout-out. It’s a 25-megapixel affair with an f/2.0 aperture. It may be overkill for Skype calls and selfies, and even with Beauty Mode turned off, Samsung still insists on smoothing out all the wrinkles and giving a strange, alien glow in the Samsung Camera app.
Will The Samsung Galaxy A50 Get The Android 12 Update?
This may be considered a plus for some, but Instagram abuse of smartphone beauty mode should be warned: you are not fooling anyone.
Still, if you can say something wrong with the Galaxy A50, Samsung did something right. Very accurate, indeed.
For £310, you get a fantastic smartphone that looks great, has a great screen, is fast enough for most people and takes great pictures too. This is a reasonable phone call for most people.
If you want something faster, the Xiaomi Pocophone F1 is worth a look for the extra £20, and if you prefer a clean version of Android it might be a good fit for the Pixel 3a. But for most people, you can’t do better for the price. Let me start this Samsung Galaxy review
