Update Smart 4k Tv 65 Inch Review – Sony 65 Inch 4K Ultra HD Smart TV (KD-65X80J) Review: Good panel performance, but is it worth asking?
Should you buy the Sony X80J? Well, it all depends on what you are looking for. The panel has excellent performance for consuming HDR and SDR content such as movies and TV shows and is also great for gaming. In actual work use, the TV performs very well, offering good color reproduction and an immersive experience. It doesn’t have the local dimming that affects its performance in dark rooms, but a bit of bias lighting helps. Audio output is also good. While we’ve tested the 65-inch variant of this TV, know that it’s available in screen sizes ranging from 43-inches to 75-inches. At the time of writing this review, the 65-inch variant is priced at Rs. 1,34,990 is. It’s the same price as the Sony 55-inch X90J, with better picture performance, local dimming and Sony’s new XR processor. So, you get new technology and better performance at the expense of screen size with the X90J. At the other end of the spectrum, we have the Mi QLED TV 75 which, for a price of 65X80J, gives you QLED backlighting and local dimming with a larger screen size. While the X80J has better colors than the Mi QLED TV, the Mi TV’s native dimming is its strength for consuming darkroom content.

Sony’s 2020 flagship TV may be dominated by an XR processor with HDMI 2.1 and more bells and whistles. But the brand has other options to consider in their 2021 lineup. From 43-inch to 75-inch we have the Sony X80J. It has Sony’s 4K HDR X1 image processor (not the X1 Extreme Powering 2020 flagship), Sony’s Triluminos Pro display and also sports the new Google TV UI. Is this a fair consideration for the asking price?

Let’s start things off with the performance of the TV panel. It has an IPS panel which means you get wide viewing angles at the expense of deep blacks (more on that in a bit). Viewing angles are good unless you go to the absolute extremes. The TV can hit a peak brightness of 400 nits but it hovers around 350 nits for extended use. It has 4K resolution with support for HDR 10 and Dolby Vision. The panel can produce some really good colors thanks to the Triluminos Pro display, but how does it compare to the Sony X90J (review) with XR processor that we reviewed earlier and more importantly, the Mi QLED TV 75 (review), which is similar For the price, gives you a bigger screen size with QLED backlighting with local dimming?
Firing up our Calman, we can see that without calibration, the TV has an average delta error of 6.4 which is lower than what we’ve seen on other TVs, but higher than what we’ve seen on the Sony X90J. Even with a 2-point grayscale, the error is high outside the box. However, color analysis shows an average delta error of 1.8 which is good. So, while the performance for color accuracy may not be as good as the X90J out of the box, the panel’s performance is pretty good for everyday content usage.
When we played our standard HDR content on this TV, it popped. With Our Planet on Netflix, you can clearly see the stars in the night sky and there are no dull or dark moments for HDR content. Even a movie like Ready Player One that races to the 11-minute mark is a visual treat with brilliant highlights.
Even the dead car in the desert in the opening episode of the Grand Tour looks rich without the green color problem we’ve mentioned on so many other TV shows.

While the HDR effect isn’t as pronounced as what we saw on the X90J, it’s better if not on par with some other TVs we’ve tested. We would have loved to have a Mi QLED TV next to this, but alas, we no longer have one in our lab. Overall, the HDR output of the TV is good, giving you an immersive experience. For HDR 10 content, you have the same set of picture presets as SDR such as Vivid, Standard, Cinema and more. We recommend the Cinema preset for the best experience but you can also switch to Standard. For Dolby Vision content you have Dolby Vision Bright and Dolby Vision Dark, and we recommend setting it to Bright if you’re consuming content in a dimly lit room.
As for biased lighting, yes, since the TV doesn’t have a dimming zone, you get a bit of a gray effect in dark sequences and it can be obvious in a dark room. However, a little bias lighting in the room will also help to overcome it.
The SDR performance of this TV is very good. We saw our usual stuff from Spider-Man: Homecoming to Young Sheldon and Mission: Impossible and it was a fun experience. Here, I would say that Standard Preset has an edge over Cinema for content like TV shows. With Young Sheldon, while the Cinema preset provided more accurate colors, the Standard preset had more of the visual punch expected for this type of content. For movies, however, the Cinema preset worked well. While we usually shy away from vivid presets, on this TV, the vivid preset has the ability to bring out colors without making people look jaundiced, and that’s really cool. For those of you who like the punch of vividness, this TV might be for you.
Even in Spider-Man Homecoming, we have Spidey’s suit with the correct blue and red colors in both the Standard and Cinema presets that look decent. The preset changes the color temperature to warm cinema and make colors more natural.

We played many of our standard games on this TV, including God of War, Spider-Man Miles Morales (review), Dirt 5 (review) and some Last of Us Part 2 (review). The TV has an HDMI 2.0 port with support for YUV422 for HDR content and has the same refresh rate as the Mi QLED TV 75 that we reviewed earlier. All the games we played on this TV looked great. From the light snow in the city in Spider-Man where you swing towards the sun, or even in Dirt 5 when running on a track, HDR appears and the sun shines down on you. Even with God of War, colors really pop on this TV. It is a fun gaming experience.
Again, it’s in a completely dark room that the “gray” in black appears due to no fading, but adding some bias lighting to the room is a quick fix for this. Needless to say, RGB HDR will require you to upgrade to the Gaming X90J thanks to HDMI 2.1. But those who want a bigger size for the price will be happy with the performance of this TV.
The X80J can be too loud to provide room-filling sound. Even at 40-45%, audio is loud and clear in large living rooms. Although the speakers lacked bass and some of the background scores from the movies didn’t pack a punch, the overall sound quality was good. Dialogues during the movie are clear, and the audio mixed with the dialogue is recognizable, with explosions in the background and the score in the background. Bangs and thuds in games also hit the right notes. While a soundbar will certainly enhance the experience, you will enjoy the audio output from this TV for everyday TV viewing, some movies and gaming.
The UI here is the same as we saw on the X90J without the far field mix. You have the same Google TV UI with the same fluidity and the same convenience of settings when changing picture presets while consuming content. Absent here is the “For You” section we’ve seen in Google TV videos and photos online. While the Apps tab replaces the Play Store for you to find apps, there’s no place to quickly go to see if an app needs an update. Like the X90J, on the X80J I had to use Google Assistant to navigate to the section where I could check for app updates.
