Earlier this month, Samsung updated the Galaxy S21 series based on Android 13 One UI 5.0 along with the Galaxy Note 20 and Galaxy S20 series phones. The South Korean company officially unveiled the One UI 5.0 update a month ago at the Samsung Developer Conference (SDC) 2022. However, the update came with the October security patches instead of this month’s version.

Previously, Samsung released the October update for the Samsung Galaxy S21 series, adding support for new features like digital navigation keys in South Korea, as well as general bug fixes, security updates, and performance improvements.

The digital key feature works with select Audi, BMW, Genesis and Ford models and allows users to register their car keys with Samsung Pass. Once registered, users can use biometric authentication to log into websites and apps on a Samsung phone in mobile mode. According to Counterpoint’s Component Practice Study, the S21 Ultra costs 7% less to manufacture than its predecessor. This cost reduction is also due to the fact that the charger and earphones have been removed from the package.

While Samsung is dropping the flagship Note series this year, the S21 Ultra includes support for the S Pen stylus (sold separately), available for the first time in the S series. With all these updates, has Samsung done enough to offer the best Android experience ever? Here is our long-term test of the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra 5G after more than six months of use.

Best Samsung Phones In India In 2022

Samsung has always focused on CMF (color, material, finish) with both the Galaxy S and Note series and the new S21 series is no exception. At the launch event, Samsung spent some time explaining the long process that goes into creating the perfect black color screen. It finally settled on a black film with Haze glass (Gorilla Glass Victus) on it.

The result is a clean and smooth black finish that not only provides a good grip on the phone, but also repels smudges and fingerprints. Even after six months of use without a case or screen protector, the Gorilla Glass Victus is holding up well and has no visible scratches so far.

The bump from the camera module on the back is still there and the phone vibrates when placed face down on a table, but it’s not a dealbreaker. The module fits perfectly into the phone housing.

Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra Review: A Justifiable Expense?

Samsung has opted for a smaller display (1500 nits) compared to the S20 Ultra (1400). Wide viewing angles and vivid colors allow you to enjoy HD content with incredible clarity. Whether you’re playing games or watching content on Netflix or YouTube, the viewing experience is fantastic. There’s a regular center hole punch above the display for the front camera, but it doesn’t really get in the way when watching videos or playing games.

Unlike the Galaxy S20 Ultra, you no longer have to choose between the highest resolution and the highest refresh rate. Instead, you now get an adaptive 120Hz refresh rate in WQHD resolution. The highlight of the display is that it uses LTPO (Low Temperature Polycrystalline Oxide) technology to ensure optimal battery usage. This allows the screen to intelligently change between 10Hz and 120Hz depending on the screen content.

For example, with static background images or when reading e-books, the refresh rate can be as low as 10 Hz. When you play graphics-intensive games or watch videos and movies, the screen refresh rate will automatically increase to a maximum of 120 Hz. There is an option to drop the refresh rate to a constant 60 Hz, but you can’t force it to 120 Hz. it’s time to run, and that’s no problem at all.

For security, Samsung uses Qualcomm’s second-generation ultrasonic fingerprint scanner. It features 1.7X larger surface area and over 50% faster detection. In my six months of use, I found the scanner to recognize the fingerprint faster and more accurately, unlocking within a second.

Samsung Galaxy S21 Buyer’s Guide: Everything You Need To Know

The Galaxy S21 Ultra 5G is the first smartphone in the US to be powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 SoC. The global version (like my Indian test device), on the other hand, is powered by the Exynos 2100 SoC. Both chipsets are built on Samsung’s 5nm process. (We’re reviewing SKUs with 12GB of RAM and 256GB of storage.)

In terms of performance, the smartphone is a powerhouse. I haven’t noticed any lag or slowdowns during my many years of use. Whether you’re using daily communication apps or browsing or gaming, apps won’t lag at all. It seems that Samsung has worked on improving memory management.

While some apps are minimized in the background, the system is not aggressive in killing background apps even when running demanding games. It allocates enough resources to keep the game running smoothly. Samsung has clearly done a good job of optimizing the software and hardware.

However, thermal management could have been better. After playing graphics-intensive games like PUBG Mobile, the back of the phone gets very hot in less than 10 minutes. While it was at 120Hz, dropping the refresh rate to 60Hz made the phone warm, although it lasted a bit longer at around 25 minutes. Thus, thermal management is good when recording video at 1080p, but when you switch to 4K 60 fps, the phone starts to get very hot after two minutes of recording.

Samsung Galaxy S21/21+ Battery Life Issues ( Draining Too Fast)

The gaming experience is good, but the back of the smartphone heats up when the refresh rate is set to 120 Hz.

Another area for improvement might be the headphones. The call volume is too low. I had to hold the phone very close to my ear to hear what the receiver was saying. However, when playing media through the stereo speakers (with the headphone acting as a second speaker), the sound output was loud enough.

Finally, the battery life of the Galaxy S21 Ultra 5G is very good. With the refresh rate set to an adaptive 120Hz and normal daily use including social media apps, listening to music via Bluetooth TWS and the always-on smartwatch, it lasts a working day. In terms of screen time, I spent just over five hours. By switching to the standard 60Hz refresh rate, battery life was about six hours with the same usage.

The battery of the Galaxy S21 Ultra lasts a normal work day without breaking a sweat, but Samsung has to close the competition.
