Samsung knew that the Galaxy A51 had to be a worthy successor to the Galaxy A50. The latter was one of its best-selling devices in 2019, and it would only be in Samsung’s best interest to repeat that success in 2020. The Galaxy A51 is mostly a hit. It lived up to expectations of being a great mid-range device.

However, Samsung had an ace up its sleeve in the form of a 5G variant. The Galaxy A51 5G is the cheapest 5G smartphone sold by Samsung. In some markets, it’s one of the few and often only 5G devices available in that price range. 5G compatibility in a device that has already proven to be a value-for-money mid-range device. What’s not to like?

There aren’t any significant differences between the LTE Galaxy A51 and its 5G sibling, but the few that exist warrant a fresh review of the device. Let’s dive into our Galaxy A51 5G review.
The Galaxy A51 5G is identical to the LTE variant, which is no surprise, but there is one subtle change. Since this is an “upmarket” version of the device, Samsung replaced the plastic in the frame with aluminum. This makes the device feel premium in the hand and is a welcome change.
But that’s about it. Samsung hasn’t swapped out the plastic for glass, so you can forget about it. It replaced the prism-like cross pattern on the back panel in favor of clean lines for a tighter color profile. The L-shaped camera sits in the same spot on the back, while the speaker, USB Type-C port and 3.5mm headphone jack sit below.
There are only three physical buttons, all located on the right side of the frame. There’s no dedicated Bixby button, but pressing and holding the power button activates the assistant. This behavior can be changed and the button can be configured to display the power menu instead
Samsung Galaxy A51 Review: A Minor Change To The Mid Range
Measuring 158.9 x 73.6 x 8.7mm, the Galaxy A51 5G is 0.8mm thicker than the LTE variant thanks to improved internals. It’s heavy at 187 grams, so you’ll definitely notice the weight, especially if you’ve used LTE before. The Galaxy A51 5G feels very well made. It is fully capable of handling the needs of daily use.
Both the variants of the Galaxy A51 5G have the same display. It sports a 6.5-inch Infinity-O Super AMOLED display with a resolution of 1080×2400 pixels, 20:9 aspect ratio and thin bezels. Viewing angles are excellent and the panel looks nice and bright even in direct sunlight. Colors are vivid and rich with deep blacks confirming the quality of this panel.
An optical fingerprint sensor is built into the screen. Performance is significantly improved compared to the Galaxy A50. We didn’t encounter the same issues with fingerprint recognition as its predecessor. It’s great that Samsung has made a lot of progress here, and it gives hope that these sensors will continue to improve in future models.
The camera department of the Galaxy A51 maintains a perfect balance between the two variants. The rear has a 48-megapixel f/2.0 primary sensor with a 12-megapixel f/2.2 ultra-wide camera and a 5-megapixel f/2.2 depth camera. The Galaxy A51 was the first Samsung device to come with a macro camera. That 5-megapixel f/2.4 sensor is also present in the 5G variant. A front-facing 32-megapixel f/2.2 camera handles selfie duties.

TL;DR: The primary camera can take good, sharp photos with accurate color reproduction and does its job well in low-light conditions. Ultrawide images have more detail, but are softer in the dark. A macro camera is great at doing that, but because it has a fixed focus, you have to lock in far away from the subject to get a good photo.
The handset runs Android 10 out of the box with the latest iteration of the Samsung One UI skin. It brings many new features like Bixby Routines, App Pairs and Edge screen. Bixby Voice is also available. Focus mode, improved parental controls and Google’s navigation gestures are part of Android 10.
Samsung has brought many great camera features from the Galaxy S20 to the Galaxy A51 lineup with One UI 2.1, including a full Pro mode with shutter speed control and manual focus. Features like Quick Share, Music Share, Night Hyperlapse and My Filters are included. Everything works perfectly, and the software itself is generally stable with no issues with apps crashing or crashing.
The Galaxy A51 has the same processor as the Galaxy A50s. The Exynos 9611 is a higher-clocked version of the Exynos 9610 found in the Galaxy A50. So, when we reviewed the LTE variant of this device, we already had a good idea of what to expect in terms of performance.

Things are a little different for the Galaxy A51 5G. Instead it is powered by the Exynos 980. It has Samsung’s own mid-range 8nm chipset and an integrated 5G modem. The CPU is configured with two 2.2 GHz Cortex-A77 cores and six 1.8 GHz Cortex-A55 cores. The handset is available with 6/8GB RAM and 128GB internal memory. It actually gets faster UFS2.1 storage compared to UFS2.0 on the LTE model. The unit we tested has 6GB of RAM.
After testing the LTE and 5G variants, we can say that there is definitely a significant difference in performance. It certainly feels faster, jumping in and out of apps is snappy, and the occasional stutter or animation lag that we experienced on the LTE model isn’t too common. Rich games like
It runs on the highest graphics settings without any problem. The LTE model isn’t bad, but we have to credit it to the Exynos 980, which makes the Galaxy A51 5G a bit faster, and no one would blame it.
There’s nothing new to report here, as the single bottom-facing speaker on the Galaxy A51 5G is just as unimpressive as it was on the LTE model. The sound is flat and you want more bass. A speaker is clearly not on Samsung’s priority list for the Galaxy A51. It feels like a missed opportunity as Samsung could have upgraded this to a 5G variant but chose not to.

In the box you get basic wired headphones that you’ll work with. There is Dolby Atmos support for Bluetooth and wired audio, which helps improve the audio experience a bit. No complaints about the call sound. Calls come through nice and clear with plenty of volume at the top end.
Since it has 5G support and requires more power, the Galaxy A51 5G has a 4500mAh battery compared to the 4000mAh LTE variant. Both have support for 15W wired fast charging. Expect a full charge from 0 to take about two hours.
The Galaxy A51 5G can easily get a full day out of its battery. It usually lasts an hour longer than the Galaxy A51. You will clearly see that the battery drains faster when connected to a 5G network. These networks are still nowhere to be found in most markets, so the phone will often have to switch between 5G and legacy networks. This may affect battery life, but Samsung made a smart decision to maximize the capacity to last Galaxy A51 5G owners all day.
In our review of the LTE variant, we concluded that the device is perfect in its own right. You get a lot for its $399 price tag. The AMOLED display is exceptional, the cameras exceed expectations and the device looks great. None of that is taken from the 5G variant. If anything, it’s even more refined.
