The company has recently released updates to its A series, the new Galaxy A13 remains one of Samsung’s cheapest smartphones on store shelves. If money is a little tight, this could be a good value alternative to its mid-range counterparts.
For very little money, you get a large 6.6-inch IPS display with an Exynos 850 chipset, 4GB of RAM, and 64GB of internal storage. And just like the recently announced A33 5G and A53 5G, it’s expandable up to an additional 1TB via microSD. On the back of the phone, there is a quad camera array that includes a 50MP (f/1.8) main unit, a 5MP ultra-wide (f/2.2), 2MP depth and a 2MP macro sensor. An 8 MP (f/2.2) selfie camera is located on the front, in the V-shaped notch at the top of the display.
Like the rest of the A-series, the A13 launches with Android 12 and Samsung’s One UI 4.1, although it doesn’t have an official IP rating and doesn’t support 5G connections in the UK.

Samsung Galaxy A13 Review: Stylish But Sluggish
The design of the Galaxy A13 is quite pedestrian by modern standards. Where the Galaxy A12 was an exciting mix of fake flagship looks with a unique two-tone design, the A13 is nothing like that and looks rather bland in comparison.
Whether you prefer a slimmer design or not is entirely subjective, but I can’t shake the feeling that Samsung could have done more to make the Galaxy A13 stand out.
The back of the phone is again just one piece of plastic (no surprise), but unfortunately it lacks the more premium look and feel of the previous model, which is a single color without any distinctive textures. Unfortunately, this new design also has the downside of being a bit of a fingerprint magnet: it’s nearly impossible to keep things smudge-free.
That said, at least Samsung did a good job of putting the cameras on the back. The 50MP main camera, ultra-wide and 5MP depth-sensing units sit vertically in the top left corner, with the phone’s macro camera and LED flash just to the right. It’s a really nice little set up as they are placed separately and there are no distracting camera blocks.

The front of the phone is entirely dominated by a large 6.6-inch screen with a slightly thick chin. The A13’s single 8-megapixel selfie camera sits in a small indentation at the top of the screen, though it doesn’t really get in the way when you’re watching YouTube or scrolling through social media.
At 165 x 76 x 8.8mm (WHD), the Galaxy A13 isn’t the most pocketable phone, although that’s offset somewhat by the phone’s plastic construction, which has reduced the total weight to just 195 grams. The screen is protected by a layer of Gorilla Glass 5, but the Galaxy A13 does not have an official IP rating to protect itself from the elements.
The side-mounted fingerprint reader is back and recognized my digits without issue during testing. Another plus is the 3.5mm headphone jack on the bottom, which is usually missing from modern flagships, and the phone can be charged via USB-C, although there’s no charging brick in the box.
The Galaxy A13 is one of the few Samsung phones that doesn’t have an OLED screen. A simple IPS number, the A13’s 6.6-inch screen has a resolution of 2408 x 1080 and a pixel density of 400ppi. It’s not a scratch on Samsung’s AMOLED technology, but you get a screen that looks pretty good for the price.

The peak brightness is also quite good, peaking at 483 cd/m² during our tests, and the phone’s contrast ratio is a respectable 1082:1. A budget phone will never be the last word in power, but unfortunately this is where the Galaxy A13 falls apart. As with the S22 series, the UK and US models differ in terms of chipset components, with the slightly older 5G-capable US model (SM-A136U) getting the MediaTek Dimensity 700, while UK buyers are stuck with 4G only for Samsung Exynos 850 supporting . Overall, this isn’t a big deal: architecturally, the flagship Exynos 2200 is very similar to the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, except in this case the 2GHz Exynos 850 is totally underpowered by the 2GHz Dimension 700 at 2GHz. Phones don’t. They don’t differ much in price: the US model costs $250, or around £191.

You’re also bombarded with app suggestions during the setup process, so be careful when you first turn on the phone: a lot of them just look like cheap toys.
