The budget segment is the only price segment that accurately meets our needs as Indians. These very expensive devices are packed with advanced features that put an end to our envy of premium devices in the mobile world. Samsung, like Xiaomi, Realme is aiming for the same and has launched a new smartphone in its budget Galaxy M series, the Samsung Galaxy M31.

The Samsung Galaxy M31 is decently and simply designed for budget smartphones. Not much going on, but still pleasing to the eye to have on our plates. When I first held the Galaxy M31, it felt very bulky. But when it was embraced in my hands, I realized that it was light in everything. Made of polycarbonate, the device is available in two colors – Ocean Blue and Space Black. I liked the black color and loved the classic black color of the device, you can’t go wrong with a smartphone or anything painted black. Although the smartphone does not have a glass, it does not take the last place in the design race and offers us an elegant, very cheap and solid construction.
In terms of design, the Galaxy M31 has a rectangular camera module on the back in the upper left corner. The camera setup includes triple camera sensors and LED flash. There is a fingerprint scanner at the center and Samsung logo at the bottom. The front has a waterdrop notch and less bezels. The chin houses the 3.5mm audio jack, USB Type-C port and speaker grill (from left to right). Nothing in the head. The left side of the smartphone houses the SIM slot, and the left side houses the volume rocker and power on/off button. Talking about the volume button, it is positioned very high and is not easy to get on any other smartphone.
Samsung Galaxy M31 is not a well designed smartphone and does not bring anything new. But it has a decent look and I give it good marks for its simplicity.
The Samsung Galaxy M31 features a 6.4-inch full HD+ Super AMOLED display, dubbed the Infinity-U display. It got its name because of the water drop shaped notch. It is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 3, which is a bit disappointing. The smartphone has several display features, most of which are common to any Samsung smartphone. Adaptive brightness, blue light filter, dark mode, choice between vivid and natural display colors, always on display, protection against accidental touches, touch sensitivity and more. While all the functions of the display are helpful, accidental touch protection doesn’t really provide any protection as the device can easily be accessed accidentally.

The visual experience is more than decent and this is an area where Samsung does not disappoint. For a budget smartphone, we get a pleasant display to use. The display is neither large nor small and is bright enough. The Infinity-U display offers the perfect screen size for both usability and video streaming. Whether it was YouTube, Netflix or any other streaming service, the content was great to watch. The smartphone satisfies the person who wants to watch Netflix on their TV (Amazon Fire Stick is a boon here), which is a positive aspect of the Galaxy M31.
Starting with the camera setup, the Galaxy M31 has a quad camera setup on the back. There is a 64MP main snapper, an 8MP ultra-wide-angle lens, a 5MP depth sensor and a 5MP macro lens. We get a 32 MP front camera. The smartphone supports multiple camera functions like 4K video recording, super slow motion videos, super steady mode, LED flash, HDR mode, night mode.
The one word I would give the Galaxy M31 cameras is decent. The cameras work well in most lighting conditions, which is also a plus. A negative point is the grainy images in indoor scenes (when zoomed in of course). Most of the time we get detailed images and the results are not very processed. But they reflect shades of exaggeration. The ultra-wide-angle lens is pretty decent like any other Samsung smartphone, and the HDR mode works well too. However, the macro lens is really moody and fails to capture as much detail as I would expect. Among other things, the night mode works well, not brilliantly, and the live focus works well, but just as moody as the macro lens.
The 32MP front shooter is pretty decent. Less ornamentation and details are enhanced. But in this case too, the images have warmer tones, which is a bit disappointing. The video department is doing well; The Super Steady mode delivers the stability it claims to offer, 4K videos are good too (recording at 360fps), and slow motion videos are above average.
Samsung Brings The New Galaxy M31 To The United Kingdom With A Quad Camera And 6,000mah (typical) Battery
The Samsung Galaxy M31 is powered by a proprietary Exynos 9611 processor paired with 6GB of RAM. The smartphone has two types of internal memory: 64 GB and 128 GB, of which I got the latter. The memory can be expanded up to 512 GB with a memory card. The smartphone works as a decent daily driver. I’m a “basic smartphone user” and don’t push the device all the way. So, for me, the Galaxy M31 did more than decent. From using social media to streaming videos, playing games (both PUBG Mobile and Candy Crush Saga) to clicking photos, all tasks were handled with ease and the smartphone didn’t face many issues. However, there were times when it stuttered and lagged with too many background apps. This can be greatly reduced with a simple “reduce animation” trick from the settings menu. As a reminder, this trick worked well with the Galaxy S10 Lite.
The highlight of the Galaxy M31 is the battery. With a massive 6,000mAh battery, the Galaxy M31 stands out in the budget arena. The battery, with my usage, lasted me two days, and I knew I was comfortable (with all the heavy drinking) on a single charge. One of the issues I ran into was not loading very fast. The 15W fast charge doesn’t charge the device very quickly, so I expect Samsung to focus on this area in budget smartphones as well.
As for the user interface, I preferred the Samsung UI 2.0 with the Galaxy S10 Lite and will stick to that stance. The user interface is clear and easy to navigate. Complete with focus mode, digital well-being, parental controls, dark mode and some gestures, the smartphone doesn’t suffer from interface issues. However, what I don’t like is the number of preloaded apps (bloatware) and their presence at the moment. Among other things, the fingerprint scanner and face unlock worked instantly, and the sound quality was good too. However, I miss the included headphones, which I think Samsung should finally start including in its budget smartphones as well.
Samsung Galaxy M31 asking price is Rs. 14,999 is the next step for Samsung to maintain its position in the budget segment. At this point, it’s not a bad effort, and the massive 6000 mAh battery steals the show. However, upgrading from the Galaxy M30s is not a good idea as both the smartphones share most of the features. It competes with Xiaomi Redmi Note 8 Pro with MediaTek Helio G90T processor and Corning Gorilla Glass 5 and Realme XT with fingerprint scanner.
Samsung Galaxy M31 Vs Galaxy M32: Are There Enough Improvements?
Although the Galaxy M31 has some flaws compared to the competition, the smartphone isn’t bad, so it’s an option to consider, apart from its user interface (which is better than MIUI) and decent cameras besides the battery.
