I’m still amazed you can buy a £245 smartphone with a vibrant AMOLED display and two days of battery life. For anyone who is overwhelmed with content on their phones, the Samsung Galaxy M31 is an absolute bargain, just don’t expect it to dazzle in other areas.

Samsung’s A-series smartphones are the main attraction in most UK stores, and for good reason. It aims to attract the same respectable middle-class crowd that Xiaomi and OnePlus are currently eyeing. However, the Galaxy M series is not much recognizable, despite being an essential part of Samsung’s global performance.

Samsung Galaxy M31 Review

The Galaxy M smartphones, which are very popular in India, are trying to pack the premium specs into an affordable format – on paper at least. The series recently received a major overhaul for 2020, and one such phone – the Samsung Galaxy M31 – made the trip to the UK market.

The Galaxy A series did a pretty good job with its mid-range space, but can Samsung repeat the same trick to lower the price scale? It’s time to find out.

At 159.2 x 75.1 x 8.9 mm and 191 grams, the Galaxy M31 is a massive phone by modern standards. Having recently gotten used to the Pixel 3a XL’s lightweight nature, the M31 felt bulky by comparison. But with that extra weight, it gives you a feeling of heaviness that lets you know this product is still durable, even if it’s reasonably priced out of the range.

Here, the phone gets a 6.4-inch screen with a teardrop-shaped cutout on the top and a small chin port on the bottom. At just £245, you’ll be surprised how uncompromising the phone’s front-end features are. There’s even a 3.5mm headphone jack (albeit on the bottom).

However, once the phone is flipped, things start to feel a little different. For starters, the M31’s plastic back is an absolute fingerprint magnet, and the smooth casing itself doesn’t stick well to your hand. Unless you are absolutely sure that you will never drop your phone, we recommend wearing a case just to keep you safe.

Although there is a bit of a camera bump here, the array of four camera sensors is barely noticeable whether the phone is in your pocket or lying on a table.

As with the A Series, Samsung’s marketing of the M Series has focused on three main features: screen, camera, and battery life. While we’ll get to the last two in a moment, I’m happy to report that Samsung has installed the screen on the M31, which is arguably the best feature of the phone (regardless of the price).

The aforementioned 6.4-inch screen uses a 2340 x 1080 HD AMOLED panel, which ensures that whatever appears on the screen, whether it’s your homepage background or The Last Dance on Netflix (Greetings) a second time, always pops up.

Of course, even with that super FHD+ resolution, you can’t get around the fact that if you want to immerse yourself in a full screen experience, you’ll have to deal with glitches in motion. True, it is small compared to the now outdated Apple shelf, but it is still around.

The other small issue is that unlike the new Moto G 5G Plus, it has a 60Hz primary screen. But given how few phones currently jump that price to 90Hz, this is an omission that cannot be overlooked.

Once you get used to running the simplified and almost flawless version of Android 10 on your Pixel 3a XL. Samsung’s custom interface looks high quality, even if not the worst.

For example, there is very little bloatware other than the various Samsung apps I usually use, although I don’t understand why I need to use the Galaxy Store when the Google Play Store is around.

Samsung Galaxy M53 5g Smartphone Review: Mid Range Phone With Orientation Problems

Fortunately, everything works fine with the M31, despite its reasonable price. That’s thanks to a Samsung Exynos 9611 SoC and a whopping 6GB of RAM under the hood. Don’t expect amazing speeds from the M31, but this setup produces pretty decent performance where it matters.

For example, the dedicated fingerprint sensor is fast and reliable (arguably better than some in-display fingerprint sensors I’ve encountered on more expensive devices). The same goes for Face Unlock: a cool little animation appears right below the front camera to let you know it’s doing its thing.

However, one of the constantly annoying issues that kept popping up was the inexplicable incompatibility with some wearables. Although this appears to have gone away after some software updates, the phone initially regularly lost connection with the Whoop 3.0 Band and TicWatch C2 Plus smartwatch. If you’re not a fan of smartwatches, you’ll probably never have this problem, but for a fitness fanatic like me who loves tracking health stats, this has been a royal pain.

If you’ve been into mobile gaming on your lunch break, you’ll find the M31 loaded with most games – just don’t expect to be playing Fortnite on it anytime soon. With the launcher still pointing, the Galaxy M31 isn’t currently a Fornite game-optimized phone, and diving into the game revealed a choppy, barely playable mess. Surprisingly, the M31 had no problem handling online matches in Call of Duty: Mobile, and smaller games like Alto’s Odyssey performed well.

You can blame my aging laptop which has a bit bad Wi-Fi, but with my new home work environment, I decided to use my phone as my main device for Zoom calls and music listening. Music, my inner workout track and some YouTube fluff at lunchtime. Suffice to say, the Galaxy M31 battery kept charging, but it resisted admirably.

With a massive 6000mAh battery, the Galaxy M31 will last about two days on a single charge, despite spending most of that time connected to Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, multiple wearables, and a pair of wireless earbuds. Well connected. This is in addition to the heavy use activities mentioned earlier. Simply put, you have to be a serious procrastinator to even consider draining your battery completely in a day.

The Galaxy M31 proves that multi-day battery life does not cost you much money, and if you plan to use the M31 as your main media device, the impressive battery life paired with the phone’s AMOLED display will do just fine. Made in Heaven. You can stick to this thing for hours.

The only disappointment is the alleged inclusion of 15W fast charging, which I disagree with. When plugged in, it took just over two hours to go from 8% to full charge. If charging your phone at night is part of your routine, you’ll never have a problem, but it’s also out of the question that you need to charge it quickly before you leave the house.

Samsung Galaxy M31 Review: A Complete Package In The Budget Segment

On paper, the promise of a Samsung smartphone with four rear cameras for under £250 sounds too good to be true, and unfortunately it does. At the back, there’s a 64MP f/1.8 main sensor, an 8MP f/2.2 ultra-wide sensor, a 5MP f/2.2 depth sensor, and everyone’s favorite macro camera, 5MP f/2.4. .

Sure kid, I don’t share the same obsession with smartphone macro cameras as other reviewers, and it’s fun sometimes to get artistic shots of an insect or a flower, but let’s face it. That, real meat and potatoes are the wide and main cameras.

Starting with the latter, I was honestly surprised to see how live shots can be with the M31 main sensor. For example, in the photo below of my gorgeous, responsive bride, the bokeh looks natural and the colors look bright without seeming saturated.

It’s only when you start zooming in on selfies that you’ll notice the camera’s inability to capture finer details, a problem that becomes even more apparent when you switch to the M31’s ultra-wide-angle lens.

Zooming in on the wide angle shots taken with the M31 shows a distinct lack of detail. I understand the appeal of the wide-angle sensor, but if it underperforms, I’d rather see those resources put into raising the main sensor. In comparison, the Pixel 3a has only one rear sensor, but it has the distinction of being one of the best smartphones for photography.

The video is also a bit of a mixed bag. Surprisingly, the Galaxy M31 can do that
