It wasn’t long ago that Samsung was the default option here. It’s not that Samsung doesn’t still make great phones, but it’s just that budget phones haven’t been that impressive over the years. At least, not compared to the competition.
Does the Galaxy M31 change anything? To answer this important question (for Samsung, if not for anyone else), read on.

Samsung has gone with glass on the back of the phone – a glass-like plastic – which is smart because it reduces weight while giving the phone a premium finish. Weight may be an issue as the Samsung Monster packs a 6,000 mAh battery.

Don’t let the “glass” in “classic” fool you, it’s still plastic and prone to scratches, and it’s glossy, which makes the phone slippery, especially for someone like me who has butterflies. On the bright side, the phone doesn’t look as cheap as its predecessor.
The color variant I use is space black, which to be honest is boring for my taste. No italics, obviously. If you don’t like black, your alternative is ocean blue.
Even with the glass, the phone is still heavy at 191 grams, but if you want that 6,000 mAh battery, you’ll have to live with that.
A bit of advice, buy a phone case because you need one and Samsung won’t give you one.

The Galaxy M31 has a 6.4-inch Super AMOLED Infinity display with a waterdrop notch at the top. The phone’s bezels and chin have thin and curved edges, but it’s nothing we haven’t seen before.

Super wide angle shots were also great. At times, I felt the footage was hotter than the actual scene, but at least the footage wasn’t ugly or unrealistic.
I had high hopes as the camera took good daylight shots but failed miserably at night. If you use the camera at night or in dimly lit areas, you’ll get nothing but blurry images. There was no clarity, not a lot of noise, and I had to fight to capture an image that didn’t look like I was running around shooting. If you thought night mode would help, you’re wrong. It doesn’t do much except beautify images. In my opinion, this is a red flag if you are taking low light photos.
The smartphone is powered by the Exynos 9611 chipset, which is similar to the one we saw on the Galaxy A51. The smartphone runs on the latest Android 10 and offers 6GB of RAM and up to 128GB of internal storage.

You get an app drawer and switching between apps was very smooth. I don’t see any lag while using the phone. I played some videos, games and music and didn’t notice any lag or overheating while doing this. Obviously, the phone is great for your daily tasks.
Games are another matter. I played Roadrush on the phone and it didn’t go very well. For example, I wish Samsung had gone with a powerful processor like the Snapdragon 730G chipset that it offers in the Poco X2 15,999. Realme 6 and Redmi Note 9 Pro pack more capable hardware at this price point.
The main feature of the phone is the battery – an amazing 6,000 mAh. I’ve used the phone for a day and a half and it’s still not fully charged. A small, (well, not that small) compromise you have to make when it comes to charging time. You should work with a 15W charger. If you plan to be outside for a while, it’s a good idea to go into zen mode while waiting for the phone to fully charge. The advantage is that once you charge it, you don’t have to worry about battery life for a while.
The display and the single speaker are very good, however, I think this phone is a better choice for people who only use a lot of videos. Of course, few phones offer an OLED display at this price, and if that’s important to you, the M31 is a no-brainer. Coupled with that large battery, all-day Netflix binges will be your thing.

There are a few reasons to buy this phone, but to be fair, they are good. The OLED display is fantastic as is the battery life. Performance is more than enough for everyday tasks, and unless you want to play a lot, you have no reason not to pick up this phone except for the camera performance.
However, the reasons for not buying this phone are equally compelling. Phones like Realme 6 Pro and Redmi Note 9 Pro Max are more powerful, more fun and offer better cameras. These phones also charge quickly.
Back to my original question: Will the Galaxy M31 make a difference for Samsung? i don’t think so.
