The Galaxy A50 was launched alongside the A30, but only one of the two made it to market. In the hand, the smartphone makes a great impression, especially because of its slightly curved edges. The touch allows you to slightly feel the difference in the chassis, but it’s not easy and it’s acceptable for a smartphone at this price anyway. On the other hand, the small hole for the speaker, located just above the notch, is very discreet both to the eye and to the touch. The second speaker is located at the bottom near the USB port. The only small criticism I would like to make is that the bottom bezel is much wider than the top bezel, which is quite odd.
The finish quality is in line with Samsung’s high-end production. The phone gives an impression of sturdiness and a premium look. There is nothing special about the placement of the keys, but it is interesting that the smartphone has a fingerprint reader directly under the screen, we will return to this later. On the back, we find three camera sensors aligned vertically.
Note that the device charges via a USB-C port, has a mini-jack, and you can have two SIM cards in addition to a microSD card. Consumers often expect these features, and if Samsung has flaws, it also knows what can sell its smartphones, at a time when competition is fierce.
The Galaxy A50 is a gorgeous 6.4-inch smartphone with a design Samsung calls the Infinity-U display. In practice, the screen is excellent and not only because of its Full HD+ resolution (1080 x 2340 pixels). The brightness is high enough to be usable in the sun (which is finally starting to show in Berlin) and the colors are successful. You’d be hard-pressed not to like a screen like this for this price. In short, Samsung lives up to its reputation as the best screen maker.
The device has two means of biometric unlocking (in addition to the traditional PIN/password): facial recognition and the fingerprint reader which, as mentioned above, is located under the display. Face recognition is quite curious, of course, the brighter the environment, the better, but sometimes it works very accurately and quickly, sometimes (and in the same brightness conditions) it does not recognize my face at all. The latter is optical and not ultrasonic, unlike the Galaxy S10. It’s quite slow and a bit frustrating. I prefer it to facial recognition because it’s (slightly) more reliable, but it’s a real pain to have two state-of-the-art unlock systems just to type a code in the “old way”.
The device runs Android 9.0, but Samsung obviously puts its One UI (version 1.1) software interface on top. I’ve really changed my mind about the OneUI interface. By default, the icons look huge (but this can easily be changed by resizing the grid), and the layout and colors look like they were chosen by a five-year-old, but this is all subjective, of course. There’s a lot you can customize, including using gestures (although Samsung’s gestures are reduced to gestures where the keys used to be), and the rest you get used to.

There is no problem with the notch (surprising given its size), as Samsung has adapted the notification menu so that the top of the device around the notch is always empty. As usual, Samsung pre-installed several apps (Email, Samsung Members, Galaxy Wearable, Samsung Health, Smart Things…) as well as three Microsoft apps (Mobile Office, OneDrive, LinkedIn). And of course, Facebook.
Under the hood is an Exynos 9610 processor, with a Mali-G72 GPU and 6GB of RAM. Of course, the experience is not perfect, but if you are looking for a very powerful smartphone for less than 350 euros, I suggest the Pocophone F1.

The sound reminds us that we have a mid-range smartphone here. Without being bad, you shouldn’t rely too much on it to create the ambience of a room, as the speaker’s sound is far from convincing. A headphone jack (in addition to its presence) offers better sound, but it won’t captivate audiophiles. Again, considering the price, these concessions have to be accepted.
When it comes to photography, Samsung hasn’t done it half-heartedly with the presence of three photo sensors on the back. Galaxy A50 has the famous magic trio of wide angle (25MP, f/1.7) + telephoto (5MP, f/2.2) + ultra wide angle (8MP, f2.4). As always at Samsung, growth is proving to be very fast.
We can’t say that this is a real revolution in the mid-range, or that it is the best camera phone in this category, but these are very good results for the market. However, we appreciate the presence of an ultra-wide-angle sensor, which many of its rivals at this price do not offer, and when the light is good, the results are surprisingly positive. At night, we lose a lot of quality, but not everything that shoots is thrown away.

In general, the color rendering is successful, but sometimes it happens that the colors are a little too bright. With this new generation of Galaxy A, Samsung seems to have done a good job. The Galaxy A50 does everything you’d expect from a good mid-range smartphone with battery life expected in this range. The South Korean manufacturer has also added some extras to the more premium version, such as the triple camera: it doesn’t rival the flagships, but it offers totally acceptable results. On the other hand, the under-display fingerprint reader and facial recognition have no real added value. In short, it is a good mid-range smartphone.
