I’m still amazed that you can get a £245 smartphone with a vibrant AMOLED screen and two-day battery life. For anyone who likes the content on their phone, the Samsung Galaxy M31 is an absolute bargain, just don’t expect it to tempt you in other areas.

Samsung’s A-series smartphones are a staple in most UK stores, and for good reason. It aims to attract the same large middle class crowd that Xiaomi and OnePlus have their eyes on. However, despite being a significant part of Samsung’s global production, the Galaxy M series is a lesser-known set.

Samsung Galaxy M31 Review: The Galaxy M30s With A Better Camera

Immensely popular in India, the Galaxy M smartphone tries to pack premium specs in an affordable format – at least, that’s what it says on paper. The series recently got a major makeover for 2020, and one of those phones – the Samsung Galaxy M31 – has made its way to the UK market.

The Galaxy A series has done a great job with the mid-range space, but can Samsung make the same move down the price scale again? It’s time to find out.

At 159.2 x 75.1 x 8.9mm and 191 grams, the Galaxy M31 is a big phone by modern standards. Having recently gotten used to the lightweight nature of the Pixel 3a XL, the M31 feels like a giant in comparison. But with all that extra weight comes a good feeling, let me tell you it’s still a solid product, even if it’s on the affordable end of the spectrum.

In that space, the phone sports a 6.4-inch screen with a teardrop notch at the top and a minimal chin bezel at the bottom. At only £245, I was impressed by how inconsistent the front elements of the phone are. There’s even a 3.5mm headphone jack (albeit on the bottom).

Once you flip the phone over, things start to get a little different. For starters, the M31’s plastic backing is a complete fingerprint magnet, and the sleek casing itself doesn’t hold your hand very well. Unless you are absolutely sure about its overall ability to never drop the phone, we recommend picking up a case just to be on the safe side.

While there’s a camera bump here, the four-camera sensor array isn’t nearly as noticeable, even if the phone is in your pocket or lying flat, with the screen facing up on a table.

Like the A series, Samsung’s marketing for the M range has focused on three main features: screen, camera, and battery life. While we’ll get to the latter two in a moment, I’m happy to report that Samsung pulled it off with the screen on the M31, arguably the phone’s best feature (besides the price).

The aforementioned 6.4-inch screen uses a Juicy AMOLED panel with a resolution of 2340 x 1080, ensuring that whatever’s on the screen, whether it’s the background of the homepage or your second run on Netflix (respect)- Through the Last Dance, It Always Happens.

Of course, with that fancy FHD+ resolution, nothing is better than the fact that if you want to immerse yourself in the full-screen experience, you’ll have to deal with cutting a notch in the action. Granted, it’s smaller than Apple’s now-old shelves, but it still is.

The only other minor problem is that, unlike the new Moto G 5G Plus, it has a native 60Hz screen. But considering how many phones in this price range have jumped to 90Hz at the moment, that’s a forgivable omission.

The Android 10 version is streamlined and almost perfect after getting used to using the Pixel 3a XL. Samsung’s custom skin looks pretty crappy, though it’s not the worst.

For example, there’s very little bloatware, with the exception of Samsung’s own various apps, which tend to use them, though why I’d need to use the Galaxy Store when Google has an App Store is beyond me.

Fortunately for the M31 though, it all works out well despite the reasonable price. This is due to the Samsung Exynos 9611 SoC processor and a solid 6GB of RAM under the hood. Don’t expect impressive speeds with the M31, but this setup performs very well where it matters.

For example, the dedicated fingerprint sensor is fast and reliable (arguably compared to some of the in-screen fingerprint sensors I’ve found on more expensive handsets). The same goes for Face Unlock, with a cool little animation happening right below the front-facing camera to let you know it’s doing its job.

However, a consistently troubling issue is the incompatibility issue with some wearable devices. Although it seems to have leveled off after a few software updates, the phone would initially regularly disconnect from my Whoop 3.0 band and TicWatch C2 Plus smartwatch. If you’re not a fan of smartwatches you probably won’t find this a problem, but for a fitness enthusiast like me who loves to track health stats, it’s a royal problem.

If you enjoy mobile gaming on your lunch break, the M31 should give you plenty of titles – just don’t expect to be running Fortnite on it anytime soon. As Endless Launcher points out, the Galaxy M31 isn’t currently one of the phones optimized for playing Fornite, and diving into the game reveals an unbeatable glitch. Surprisingly, though, the M31 had no trouble running online matches in Call of Duty: Mobile, and smaller titles like Alto’s Odyssey did well.

Blame it on my old laptop, which doesn’t have a Wi-Fi connection, but in this new state of working from home, I’ve used my phone as the primary device of choice for making Zoom calls, listening to music, doing my tracks, etc. have decided to use. Working out indoors and enjoying YouTube at lunchtime. Suffice it to say, I’ve put the battery through its pace on the Galaxy M31, but it absolutely fought back.

With a massive 6000mAh battery, the Galaxy M31 managed to make it through to the end of two days on a single charge, despite being connected to Wi-Fi for most of that time, with Bluetooth turned on and multiple wearables and a single charge. Pair wireless earphones connected for good measure. This is on top of the heavy usage activity I mentioned earlier. In short, you have to be a serious procrastinator to think about completely draining the battery in a day.

The Galaxy M31 proves that having multi-day battery life doesn’t cost the earth, and if you plan on using the M31 as your primary media device of choice, paired with the phone’s AMOLED screen This incredible battery life makes for a match-made in heaven. You can enjoy hours of content on it.

The only disappointment is the inclusion of 15w fast charging, which I’d like to take apart. When connected to a power outlet, it takes over two hours to fully charge from 8%. If charging your phone overnight is part of your routine, you won’t have a problem here, but there’s no need to quickly top-up before you leave the house.

Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra 5g Review: Good Phone, Bad Processor

On paper, Samsung’s promise of a smartphone with four rear cameras for under £250 sounds too good to be true, and unfortunately, it is. On the back you have a 64-megapixel f/1.8 main sensor, an 8-megapixel f/2.2 ultra-wide sensor, a 5-megapixel f/2.2 depth sensor, and everyone’s favorite 5-megapixel f/2.4 macro camera .

I’m definitely a kid, I don’t happen to share the same disdain for the inclusion of macro cameras on smartphones, and it’s fun to take the occasional artistic photo of a bug or flower, but let’s face it, it’s real. Meat and Potatoes is an ultra wide and main camera.

Starting with the latter, I was really surprised by how vibrant the shots were with the M31’s main sensor. For example, the great picture below of my fiancé has a natural-looking bokeh effect and colors appear vibrant without appearing saturated.

It’s only when you start zooming in on portraits that you notice the camera’s inability to pick up finer details, a problem that becomes even more apparent when you switch to the M31’s ultra-wide-angle lens.

Samsung Galaxy M31 Review: The Best Of Samsung For Less?

Zooming into the corners of any wide-angle shot taken with the M31 reveals a distinct lack of detail. I can understand the appeal of wanting a wide-angle sensor, but if it’s just going to do a sub-par, I’d look at those resources invested in improving the main sensor. In comparison, the Pixel 3a only has one rear-facing sensor, but it benefits from being one of the best smartphones for photography.

The video is also a bit of a mixed bag. Surprisingly, the Galaxy M31 can
