The Galaxy A50 is one of the first Samsung A-series phones to launch in the US. For an average price of $349, it offers a flagship design, a beautiful AMOLED display, and a battery that easily lasts all day. But with average performance, a poor speaker, a weak fingerprint sensor, and no warranty for software updates, the Galaxy A50 doesn’t offer the price of the $399 Google Pixel 3a.
A50 is like a flagship. It’s thin, sleek, and has an edge-to-edge display that’s rare on phones in this price range. Aside from a small teardrop cutout for the selfie camera, there’s almost no bezel — another rarity at this price point. It measures 6.24 x 2.94 x 0.30 inches (HWD) and weighs 5.86 ounces.
Flip the A50 over and you’ll see a glossy plastic back that’s almost black. The vertically aligned triple cameras are on the top left, with a monochrome Samsung logo in the center. While the design is undeniably attractive, there were plenty of scratches and scuffs during our review.

The top of the phone is bare, while the bottom houses the headphone jack, speaker, and USB-C charging port. On the left side you’ll find the hybrid SIM/microSD slot, and on the right side you’ll find the volume and power buttons. The buttons are easy to reach even for small hands and provide a pleasant click when pressed.
The 6.4-inch AMOLED display is undoubtedly the A50’s best feature. The resolution is 2340 by 1080 for 403 pixels per inch, and everything looks very sharp with inky blacks and vibrant colors. The only drawback is the in-display fingerprint sensor. In testing, it worked only 40% of the time, and it didn’t respond at all to a dirty finger or dirty screen.
Like most phones in this price range, the display uses Gorilla Glass 3, an older version of Corning’s tempered glass that’s more likely to break if accidentally dropped. Like the Pixel 3a and other mid-range phones, the A50 isn’t waterproof, so we recommend a case to protect the phone from drops and water damage.

Call quality is good. Noise cancellation worked smoothly, and at 68dB the speaker is perfect for indoor conversations, although you may struggle to hear a call on a busy street. The speaker worked at a frequency of 82 dB, which is enough to hear the sound in a noisy room.
On the other hand, the Galaxy A50’s bottom speaker is disappointing. At a peak volume of 93dB, it can easily fill a room, but the sound quality degrades at higher volumes, so you don’t want to rely on it for media streaming. Fortunately, there’s a headphone jack for wired audio, as well as Bluetooth 5.0 for wireless audio and media connectivity. NFC is also available for mobile payments.
There are three sensors on the back of the Galaxy A50. The main wide-angle sensor has a resolution of 25 MP and an aperture of f/1.7. It’s complemented by an additional 8-megapixel ultra-wide-angle lens with f/2.2 aperture and a 5-megapixel depth sensor.
Most of our daytime test shots with the 25-megapixel sensor looked sharp and showed very good depth of field, although a few backgrounds were blurred. The ultra-wide sensor performed similarly, though we did notice a shot with some distortion at the edges.

For low-light photography with the 25-megapixel sensor, most of our images were acceptable, but a bit muted by background noise. Photos with ultra-wide lenses have significantly more noise, as well as blurred backgrounds. There’s no comparison to the amazing Pixel 3a, which has the absolute best camera you can get outside of an expensive flagship.
On the front of the phone is a 25-megapixel selfie camera with f/2.0 aperture. In bright light, subjects were crisp, background detail was sharp, and color accuracy was outstanding. Low-light photos are also excellent, with good color accuracy and sharp foreground detail. There was some blur in the background, but not enough to distract from the photo. Still, the Pixel 3a easily has the edge in the camera.
The Galaxy A50 is powered by a Samsung Exynos 9610 processor (compared to Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 600 series) and 4GB of RAM. There is also 64GB of storage, of which 48GB is available out of the box. If you need more space, the A50 supports up to 512GB of external storage with a microSD card.
For basic tasks such as e-mail, web browsing and social networking, the A50 performs very well. However, with more than half a dozen apps open, the A50 quickly slows down. The game is also hit or miss. We tested the phone with Asphalt 8 and experienced long loading times and occasional frame drops, but still managed to play without too much frustration.

Benchmarks validate our results in the real world. The phone scored 5389 on PCMark, which simulates everyday use. That’s well behind many competitors in this price range, including the Google Pixel 3a (7,378) and the Moto G7 Power (6,107).
The A50 has a 4000 mAh battery. In the power consumption test, where we stream HD video over Wi-Fi at full brightness, the phone lasted 8 hours and 54 minutes on a full charge. That’s less than the Pixel 3a XL (9 hours, 22 minutes), but with conservative use you should have no problem getting through the day. Fast charging is powered by a 15W adapter.
The Galaxy A50 comes with Android 9.0 Pie and Samsung One UI. Over the past few years, Samsung’s user interface has become more sophisticated and not much different from stock Android. The most notable changes include a dedicated navigation bar, a suite of Samsung apps that replicates most Google apps, and Samsung’s Bixby, which replaces Google’s Discover Feed.
We tested a review unit that included about a dozen viral apps from Verizon (not including Samsung’s own apps). Fortunately, we managed to remove all of them.

While the Galaxy A50 doesn’t have the latest version of Android, it looks like the 2020 update is in the works. However, after that, all bets are off. If software updates are important to you, the Pixel line runs stock Android and is guaranteed to receive operating system updates for at least three years.
The Samsung Galaxy A50 is a solid mid-range phone with good looks, a great OLED display, and solid battery life. If you’re a die-hard Samsung fan looking for a good mid-range phone, this is your best bet. If not, you should consider the Pixel 3a. It has all the same specs as the A50, plus a great fingerprint sensor, faster performance, better camera quality, and guaranteed software updates, making it our Editors’ Choice.
