That’s where the Samsung Galaxy A50 comes in, and it’s great. At a glance, it looks like the Galaxy S10, but on the inside it offers an experience that’s super fast without overwhelming the graphics performance. At £310 it’s an absolute steal and worth considering if the S and Note ranges are too expensive for you.

The Galaxy A series is pretty confusing. All you really need to know is that the Galaxy A50 is currently the second best in the lineup behind the A70. It will soon be third after the A80 launches later this month. broadly, it outperforms the A10, A20e and A40

What that literally translates to is a 6.4-inch device that looks similar to the Samsung Galaxy S10, but cuts down on the inside. The octa-core 2.3GHz Exynos 9610 processor that powers the phone is the same as the Snapdragon 675 that powers the Galaxy A70. The phone is also supported by 4GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage.
Surprisingly for the price, the Samsung Galaxy A50 comes with a triple camera array on the back with a depth sensor and a 25-megapixel ultra-wide main lens. The A50 also comes with Samsung’s usual Super AMOLED screen, while rivals at this price point often fall for cheaper IPS displays. Doubly so when it also includes an in-screen fingerprint reader
So what’s the harm? Well, a very reasonable £310 you don’t know It’s actually quite a bit cheaper than other Samsung smartphone offerings, so its closest competitors are from other manufacturers.
First up, we have our favorite mid-range Google Pixel 3a. A cut-down version of Google’s flagship, this version is a bit slower, less impressively built and adds some features to the £399 price tag, but it’s already on sale for around £350. Similarly, the P30 Lite is a slimmed-down version of the Huawei P30 series and retails at £329.

Alternatively, the mid-range outfit has Xiaomi’s flagship Pocophone F1. It’s a phone that costs just £329 despite having Qualcomm Mobile’s fastest processor in 2018. Finally, there’s the Nokia 8.1, which starts at £380, but does a lot less than that.
It’s a tough competition, but the Samsung Galaxy A50 is off to a great start, with a lot to offer from the Galaxy S10. There will be almost no bezels on it, although this version has seen a slight return of the front-facing camera. But, here, it’s more of a muscle – a tiny knob on the top of the phone
Like the S10, there’s a very small chin on the bottom of the phone, but it’s only really noticeable because there’s no notch on the other side to speak of. The back is slightly curved and it’s plastic rather than glass, which should make it a bit more durable. This is the kind of phone you want to protect with some kind of protection, remember
Most interestingly for a phone of this price, the fingerprint reader is built into the screen, meaning it’s not visible on the phone itself. Just slide your finger down the screen and the phone will lock – maybe a hair slower than a hair, but it’s a great feature at this price.

In terms of other features, as usual Samsung does really well Expandable storage? Check: Micro SD card up to 512GB supported Headphone jack? Suggested and valid dual SIM? Yes sir, the two downsides I find are that it’s not waterproof and doesn’t support wireless charging, but you can’t have everything at this price.
If there’s one thing Samsung is known for with its phones, it’s the quality of its displays. And this Super AMOLED screen doesn’t disappoint – this time you’re looking at a 6.4-inch panel with a resolution of 2,340 x 1,080.
The screen displays 100% of the sRGB spectrum and in the main color mode the screen manages to display colors really accurately. The other modes – Photo, Cinema and Adaptive – are all a bit more lively, but you can’t say you’re not spoiled for choice.
Being an AMOLED, the contrast is perfect and the brightness isn’t too bad either, reaching a peak brightness of 560cd/m2 in auto mode (although it drops to 350cd/m2 if you set it to manual brightness, probably because of the battery).

In short, it’s as good a screen as you’d expect for the price — thanks, in fact, to the addition of an in-screen fingerprint reader.
Before I answer this question, a quick backup Samsung Galaxy A50 is powered by a 2.3GHz Exynos 9610 processor, with 4GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage. In daily use, it feels buttery smooth, locks in quickly, and transitions easily between applications. But how does it rate?
With one exception, the Samsung Galaxy A50 is more than anything else in its price bracket (surprisingly, including the £60 more expensive Galaxy A70), but not by enough to overshadow things.
Apart from this exception: the ₹ 329 Xiaomi Pocophone F1 wipes the floor with everything else in this price range. It’s not surprising since last year’s Samsung Galaxy S9 in the US used the same chip, but it’s clear what you need to do if you want to get the most out of it.

It’s a similar story when it comes to graphics, although the Galaxy A50 fares slightly worse here, coming in behind the Snapdragon Pixel 3a and the Nokia 8.1. Of course, the Pocophone F1 is the clear winner
But the Samsung Galaxy A50 has one big trick, which is the battery life. Our video didn’t actually last long enough to record it, so it went a second time and lasted 21 hours and 21 minutes before the 4,000mAh cell died. Only the Galaxy A70’s extra 500 mAh beats it, where it managed a whopping 25 hours and 22 minutes.
The Samsung Galaxy A50 treats us to not one, not two, but three rear cameras The main 25-megapixel, f/1.7 camera is supported by an eight-megapixel ultra-wide-angle lens and a five-megapixel f/2.2 depth sensor. A telephoto lens would be nice for one of these, but given the generous nature of what we’re getting for the price, I’d probably ask for the moon on a stick.
That makes it a match for the £329 Huawei P30 Lite’s triple-camera lineup (48-megapixel, f/1.8 eight-megapixel wide-angle lens and two-megapixel depth sensor). And while the Samsung Galaxy A50’s photos look great from a distance, when you zoom in, it’s clear that the Huawei P30 Lite has the upper hand.

That’s not to say the Galaxy A50 is bad, and given the uncertain future of Huawei’s Android, you might consider it a minor loss.
In low-light indoor shots, the cameras are more consistent and deliver images full of bright colors, detail, and very little noise. Good job, both, although Huawei once again has the slight edge
For video, the Galaxy A50 is capable of recording in Full HD at 30 fps. If you want 4K or 60 fps (not both at the same time), you’ll need to drop an extra £60 on the Galaxy A70. That said, video quality is excellent and image stabilization seems adequate for shaky hands
The front-facing selfie camera also deserves a shout. It’s a 25-megapixel shooter with an f/2.0 aperture. It’s more than enough for Skype calls and selfies, and even with Beauty Mode off, Samsung insists that remove all your features and give you a strange and alien glow in the Samsung Camera app.
