Update Samsung A50 Display Price Samsung Store Review – This year we started with the SNOW CUP M-series and A-series affordable smartphones from LG as part of the company’s plan to fight Xiaomi, Kingdom, and others in terms. Samsung has almost everything at a reasonable price point between Rs. 8,000 and Rs. 20,000 in a short period of time, sometimes with multiple options thanks to the number of models and variants launched. Since it’s been launched, Samsung’s competitors have refreshed their tablets, so it’s inevitable that we’ll see some updated models from the Korean giant.
New Samsung Galaxy A50s prices starting at Rs. 22,999, which is a slight bump in price compared to the Galaxy A50 (Review). Partly joined shortly after the high-profile Redmi K20 (Review) was released, with several other flagship phones seeing a price cut that offered them in this segment. Which phone for you, with a budget of around Rs. 25,000? We reviewed the Samsung Galaxy A50s to find out.

Not much is new in terms of the Samsung Galaxy A50s look and feel. When we reviewed the Galaxy M20 (Review), one of Samsung’s first aggressive attacks, we commented on how generic it felt and how it broke away from the company’s previous designs. Similarly, the Galaxy A50s could easily be mistaken for one of many phones from today’s major brands, however you look at it from that angle.

The front of this phone is basically a screen, with a small camera notch at the top (Samsung calls this design ‘Infinity-U’). The screen has rounded corners, the chin is quite thick while the sides and the top margin are narrower. The edges are very slightly curved, and we’ve noticed with interest that this is one of the few phones we’ve handled recently that doesn’t come with an embedded plastic screen protector, which we don’t mind, either.
On the back we have one touch of personality that Samsung wanted to show off-center geometric pattern of transverse lines with different shades of color in each segment. There are three options: Prism Crush Black, Prism Crush White, and Prism Crush Violet – Our review unit is the black version, but the color on the back is more shades of gray.
Thankfully, this design isn’t as easy to collect smudges and fingerprints as the mirror-like one on the Galaxy A50, but you still need to wipe it down several times a day to keep it looking its best. There’s still a slight prismatic effect in certain types of lighting, though it’s more subtle than the psychedelic reflections we saw on this phone’s predecessor.
There is a USB Type-C port on the bottom, along with a 3.5mm audio jack and one speaker. The tray on the left has slots for two Nano-SIMs as well as a microSD card. The power and volume keys are all on the right, and the top is empty.

At 166g and only 7.7mm thick, the Galaxy A50s is surprisingly easy to handle and live with. You can reach a little to reach the top of the 6.4-inch screen, but we have no other complaints. The build quality is also pretty good, although this phone still feels plasticky and not very premium. There is also no mention of what type of glass is used for the screen.
It didn’t have any scuffs or scratches on the panels or the back panel during our review period, but we’ll be using this phone’s plastic case. Fortunately, one is included in the retail box. Nokia has also thrown in a 10W charger, a USB Type-C cable, a 3.5mm headphone jack, a simple eject tool, and a quick start guide.
The first thing you notice about this phone when you turn it on is the bright Super AMOLED screen. It measures 6.4 inches, but will be cut to 6.2 inches if you measure with rounded corners. Full HD+ resolution at 1080×2340. There is a notch at the top of the front camera, and a conveniently placed integrated fingerprint sensor.
Nokia used its own octa-core Exynos 9611 processor, which appears to be a minor update to the Exynos 9610 in the Galaxy A50. Four 1.74GHz ARM Cortex-A53 cores and four 2.3GHz Cortex-A73 cores, plus Mali-G72 graphics. This chip has the same CPU, GPU, and LTE capabilities as its predecessor, but supports higher camera resolutions.

Which brings us to one new feature of this phone, the primary 48-megapixel f/2 rear camera. It is paired with an 8-megapixel f/2.2 wide-angle camera and a 5-megapixel depth sensor. The front camera has also been upgraded with a 32-megapixel resolution and f/2 aperture.
There are two variants of this phone, but both have 128GB of storage. The only difference is that you get either 4GB for Rs. 22,999 or 6GB RAM for Rs. 24, 999. This is similar to how Samsung offered the Galaxy A50, and we think it is rather necessary to have two options that are so similar. You probably won’t be able to make much of a difference unless you run a lot of heavy apps and games.
The large 4000mAh battery is quite large, and 15W fast charging is possible even if you get a 10W charger in the box. Dual-band Wi-FI 802.11ac, Bluetooth 5, GPS, NFC, FM radio are all available.
Our unit uses version 1.5 of Samsung One UI software, running on top of Android 9 with the August 2019 security update. One UI is primarily designed for large television phones and while it looks crisp and modern, we’re not fans of oversized icons and wide spaces everywhere. Fortunately, you can adjust the size and density of the home screen and app drawer settings.

There is a lot of white space in the menus and everything feels like the big screen is not being used very well, especially in the notification shade and Settings app where a lot of scrolling is required. That said, the ability to pull down the menu and control down to the top line within the weapon strike is most welcome. Many features have also been retained, including Secure Folder, Product Restore, Kid Space, Night Mode, Floating Apps, and Messenger Dual app customization and an independent contact list.
Long pressing the power button on the right now calls up the voice assistant Bixby. To turn off the phone, there is a small power button on the screen in a quick toggle area that you reveal by scrolling down from the top of the screen. There is also a Bixby Home screen to the left of the first home screen with some useful panels such as the scoreboard and reminder, but also a lot of content.
Bixby’s custom settings allow you to name multiple commands with “if…then” conditions. For example, you can tell the Galaxy A50s to change the Wi-Fi and Bluetooth status, sound profile, display customization, lock screen shortcuts, and accessibility settings and even perform specific actions such as opening a website or sending an SMS. All of these can be triggered simultaneously when you leave or enter a location, connect an accessory, open a specific app, receive a call, and/or pair with a certain Bluetooth device.
The Super AMOLED panel allows for an ambient display, although the phone by default requires one ring while the phone is in standby to see the time and status icons. You can set it to remain visible all the time or only during certain times.

You also have a lot of control over what content appears on the lock screen, plus a choice of animated films or a collection of images to cycle through. Lock Screen Stories are pieces of content, some of those ads, that will appear every time you wake up your phone from sleep. This can be disabled during the first Android setup process.
Nokia has also decided to feature Edge Panels, which we previously only saw on higher-end phones with curved glass sides. These thin tabs can be placed on either side of the screen, and inside are resolved to one or more vertical lines that contain shortcuts to contacts or apps, or small tools, or feed content. More Edge tablets can be downloaded through the Samsung Galaxy Store.
Only a few apps are available: Facebook, Netflix, OneDrive, and the Samsung Galaxy Store and Game Launcher. When we put this phone down, we were told the app would be “suspended” unless used for three days or more, which means it won’t update content or receive notifications. This can be disabled in the battery settings, but it should be noted that default settings are unusual and can cause unexpected notification delays.
