Apart from its flagship S10 series, Samsung has also introduced a series of mid-range phones these days. Due to increased competition, Samsung is also going hard on pricing and hence the A50 starts at Rs 19,999. .
This is the company’s first mid-range offering with an in-display fingerprint scanner. But hold your excitement – it will not use the ultrasonic fingerprint scanner of the S10, but an optical scanner, which many other brands (such as OnePlus, Vivo, Oppo use). While the competition uses a fourth-generation display sensor, the A50’s fingerprint sensor looks like the original technology. Fingerprint recognition is slow, but doesn’t work close to 50% of the time. Samsung released a software update to improve speed/resolution, but we only saw a marginal improvement. In comparison, Face Unlock works well – better than what we’ve seen on M-series smartphones.
The A50 has a beautiful 6.4-inch Full HD display with a beautiful Infinity U shape. The screen is a pleasure to consume content and impresses with narrow bezels, high brightness and deep blacks. However, it uses the outdated Gorilla Glass 3 to protect the screen, which lets it down. Despite the polycarbonate back panel, we liked the solid build quality of the device. The back panel is crystal clear and reflects light in all the colors of the rainbow. As usual, the glossy finish is prone to smudges and fingerprints.

Performance is where the phone confuses us. It is powered by Samsung’s octa-core Exynos 9610 processor with 4/6GB of RAM and 64GB of storage. Our review is the 4GB RAM model which can play games like PUBG and Asphalt very well. However, when it comes to work, we are shocked to see the backlog and inefficiency. This applies to basic functions like swiping left on the Bixby screen, switching between running apps, editing photos, and even closing apps to return to the home screen. This becomes more obvious if you have more than 10 apps running in the background – in our opinion, there is no improvement between the new Exynos chip and the operating system. Battery life is a strong point of the phone – we can get a regular backup close to a day and a half. There is also fast charging support and fast charging is provided out of the box.
The Galaxy A50 has a triple rear camera that delivers excellent results in daylight. The pictures are very detailed and the camera interface is zippy. It has a wide aperture, which is great for shooting landscapes and architecture. The third lens is a depth sensor that helps focus life and provides better detection. Portrait photos have good bokeh, but there are better camera phones in this price range like the Poco F1. The problem is that in low light photos suffer from soft details and we often end up with bright photos. We also didn’t notice that video recording in the standard camera app is limited to Full HD resolution, and you can’t switch between standard and wide angle when taking photos. The 25-megapixel front-facing camera does the same job as the rear camera – great photos in daylight, but lacks detail when used in low light.
Other things we like about the phone include a dedicated microSD slot for memory expansion, sound from external speakers, and Dolby Atmos for audio. However, for 20 thousand rubles, the Samsung Galaxy A50 is hard to sell. The Poco F1 offers the best performance at the same price with its Snapdragon 845 processor and better camera and battery performance. The Redmi Note 7 Pro offers a better design, higher resolution glass, better 48MP dual cameras and similar battery life at just Rs 13,999. If you stick with the Samsung brand, you can get the Galaxy M30 for Rs 14,999. It has the same super amoled display, triple camera setup and 5000 mAh battery.

The Samsung Galaxy A series has been refreshed in 2019 thanks to the decision to increase the specifications and offer a strong price. The Samsung Galaxy A50 is definitely the pick of the lot, but it’s only available online.
Fortunately, the sealed model is available for pre-order from Amazon (h/t: SamMobile) for $350. If you pre-order now, you’ll also get a Samsung Galaxy Fit Fitness Tracker. Anyway, the seller says the item will be available on September 20th.
The Galaxy A50 ticks a few boxes for a mid-range phone in 2019 with a 6.4-inch Super AMOLED (FHD+) display, a fingerprint sensor, and a 4,000mAh battery with a 15W charger.

Samsung’s mid-ranger doesn’t fare well elsewhere, offering an Exynos 9610 chipset, 4GB to 6GB of RAM, and 64GB or 128GB of expandable storage. A 25-megapixel selfie camera with liquid level and three rear cameras (25-megapixel, 8-megapixel ultra-wide, 5-megapixel depth) take care of the photography side of things.
In his Galaxy A50 review, our Dhruv Butani considers the device to be one of the best Samsung flagships of the year. He praised the OLED screen, design and performance, but preferred the software experience compared to the Redmi Note 7 Pro.
“This phone doesn’t block you or block you for long periods of time and doesn’t show ads. I have a lot of users, which I would think is a big incentive,” wrote Dhruv.
The only possibility is that Samsung has already announced the Galaxy A50s, which will replace the A50’s 25MP sensor with a 48MP primary camera. Otherwise, the A50s offer no more flexibility.
