The Galaxy A21s is one of Samsung’s cheapest 2020 A-series phones. It’s special for two reasons: it has a 5,000mAh battery under the hood and is powered by an Exynos 850 processor. The Exynos 850 is Samsung’s first low-end chipset built on its 8nm process node, which is also used for the Exynos 9820 in last year’s Galaxy S10. As a result, it should be very efficient, and pairing it with a massive battery was a smart move.

But battery life isn’t the only thing you look for in a smartphone. People also want a beautiful display, good cameras and fast performance even in affordable phones. How does the Galaxy A21s fare in all these departments? The answer to this question is already given in the title of this review, but you should read in detail.

Samsung Galaxy A21s Review And Faqs

The A21s has the usual design we’ve come to expect from Samsung’s affordable mid-range phones. The phone has a gradient plastic back that reflects light well. The back is completely smooth, with none of the engravings and grooves found on devices like the Galaxy A51. It looks stylish and the phone feels good in the hand, partly due to the weight of the 5000mAh battery inside.

Unfortunately, the phone front is a different story. The 6.5-inch Infinity-O display, which has a hole in the left corner, has an LCD panel and HD+ resolution, so it’s a bit stingy and not sharp. The Galaxy A20s had the exact same display, so no upgrade here. I mean, the screen does the job, but an AMOLED screen would have been much better and would have greatly enhanced the viewing experience.

The Galaxy A21s has a physical fingerprint reader on the back. While Samsung has greatly improved the responsiveness and accuracy of its in-display fingerprint sensors this year, I still think a physical reader is a plus for existing phones. It’s not fantastic, but it’s the fastest and most accurate fingerprint recognition technology around, except for the obvious drawback that it sits on the back and requires you to pick up the phone before you can use it.

The Galaxy A21s has four rear cameras. But unlike the more expensive A-series phones, both of them have 2-megapixel sensors on the depth and macro cameras. The depth camera is only used for blurring the background in bokeh shots and works well despite the limited resolution, but macro shots offer almost no detail. And since it’s a fixed focus lens, it’s hard to get the right distance to your subject with a macro camera, and that often means you end up with out-of-focus photos. There’s a macro camera if you need it, but its quality leaves a lot to be desired.

Powered by a 48-megapixel primary camera, it captures images with great detail and vibrant colors during the day. Dynamic range is also usually very good. However, the performance at night is very low. Detail is lost when shooting indoors in artificial light, and noise creeps in when shooting in low light. Like the Galaxy A31 and A41, the A21s doesn’t have a dedicated night mode, so there’s no way to manually improve image quality in low light. The phone also lacks other modes like slow motion and hyperlapse.

The ultra-large camera is very useful, but its image quality is strictly average. Selfies with a 13-megapixel camera have enough detail and accurate colors, but in low-light conditions there is a lot of noise and details are almost completely destroyed. There’s nothing unique here – the selfie cameras in this segment perform well no matter what phone you’re getting. Yes, you can use the Live Focus mode on the front camera to take pictures with bokeh. You can adjust the background blur level on the fly or after taking a photo, but there are no background effects to choose from.

The Exynos 850 in the Galaxy A21s is efficient, but its performance is not satisfactory. I also experienced lag when opening apps, switching apps, or going to the home screen. Clicking on a link inside an app like Slack would sometimes result in a nearly two-second wait for the browser to open, which frustrated me because I thought it would slow down my work. My review unit had 3GB of RAM, but the 4GB RAM option we have in our office in the Netherlands isn’t much better.

On minimum graphics settings with a slightly smoother frame rate. I don’t think the lower screen resolution will tax the GPU too much, but you’ll still need to be on the lowest graphics settings to get playable framerates. Anything above the bottom and the frame rate slows to a crawl. simple games like

Samsung Galaxy A13 Review: Display, Battery Life, Charging Speed, Speaker

Bad, but you have to consider that Samsung sells devices like Galaxy M21 and M31 in the same segment. Both phones offer significantly better performance and specifications. In India, the M21 is much cheaper than the A21 and the M31 is a bit cheaper too, making them better options. In many European and Asian markets, the M21 and M31 are 10-20 euros more expensive than the A21, making the A-series a dubious entry in this price segment (a point I’ll revisit in the verdict of this review).

The Galaxy A21s has the distinction of being the first Galaxy phone to run One UI 2.1 major version. The Core tag means that it has only the most basic features similar to the Galaxy M series phones. You don’t get traditional Samsung features like Always On Display or Secure Folder.

Also missing are new features like One UI 2.0 screen recorder available on Galaxy M phones. One UI 2.1’s excellent sharing feature is included, but overall it’s a simple software experience, as you’d expect from Galaxy devices at the lower end of the price scale.

Of course, Android 10 features like Google’s digital well-being and navigation gestures and Samsung features like theme support, Dual Messenger, Game Launcher and one-handed mode are also included. The Galaxy A21s should receive Android 11 and One UI 3.0 updates at some point, and we can expect it to be updated to Android 12 as well. Samsung releases new security updates for the device every three months. Security updates should come at this frequency at least every three years.

The Galaxy A21s doesn’t come with any headphones in the box, so unless you have your own, you’re left with just the phone’s speaker. The speaker is of normal budget quality, the size is just enough for a small, quiet room, but there is no distortion of the sound even at maximum volume. There is support for Dolby Atmos, which works with wired and Bluetooth audio and improves stereo and surround effects when enabled. Calls went through well on the A21 phones with no sound quality issues. Network performance was also excellent, with good signal strength on both SIM cards.

The Exynos 850, as mentioned above, is Samsung’s first low-end chip built on the 8nm process, and it’s really efficient. The A21s lasted almost two days after the first full charge, which was impressive. You’ll find that the A21s can’t be drained in a day, even with the heaviest use. Epic battery life is the most attractive feature of this phone. The A21s has a 6,000 mAh battery over the Galaxy M31, of course its 5,000 mAh battery comes with a more efficient processor and a lower screen resolution.

The Galaxy A21s supports 15W fast charging and the battery goes from 0 to 100 in just over two hours. That’s similar to what you’ve seen on other budget Galaxy phones with a 5,000mAh battery, and it’s good enough considering how impressive the battery life is.

Update Samsung A21s 4 64 Review

If battery life is a priority for you, you might be more than happy with the Galaxy A21s. But if you’re in the market for a Samsung Galaxy M21 or Galaxy M31 on sale, the A21s is a phone you absolutely shouldn’t ignore. Save your money and check out any of the M series phones, even the Galaxy A31 (read our review here) if it’s available in your country. All of these phones are much better for a little extra money, and they make the Galaxy A21 look like a junk phone.
