Update Samsung A12 Features And Specifications Review – Now I know we usually have more expensive devices here, but this time we have one of the cheapest, if not the cheapest, new options from Samsung, the Galaxy A12.
The design tastes like blue. When we say cheap, we mean really cheap. This phone starts at $180 and for its price it is actually well made.

It’s an all-plastic build, but we think the blue color and textured back make it quite fun to hold. And also one or two nice things here. We get dual SIM support with a dedicated Micro SD card slot and a headphone jack.

But to keep your expectations in check, the back is a little concave and curves inward when you press it.
Otherwise, for security, you get a side-mounted fingerprint scanner that does a great job. There may be a few flaws, but we’ve found it to be relatively fast and reliable.
And last but not least we have a speaker on the bottom that is a bit quiet but also doesn’t distort too much when listening at maximum volume.
Screen Good enough The screen isn’t bright enough for easy outdoor use, but it should do the job if you plan on reading a quick text or two while walking the dog. At least it dims enough so that you don’t accidentally go blind at night.

The panel isn’t AMOLED, so don’t expect amazing colors, but the IPS technology it comes with is at least immune to burn-in, doesn’t give any ghosting, and still produces good enough colors for the average person. Another thing to note, you’re not going to get crazy high refresh rates here and your resolution is 720×1600 pixels, but that’s to be expected in this price range.
The CIE 1931 color gamut diagram represents the set (area) of colors a screen can reproduce, using the sRGB color space (highlighted triangle) as a reference. The graph also provides a visual representation of the screen’s color accuracy. The small squares across the triangle boundaries are the reference points for the different colors, while the small dots are the actual measurements. Ideally, each point should be placed on top of its corresponding square. Camera just works We are quite satisfied with the camera. With sufficient sunlight we were able to take some very nice pictures with decent sharpness.
These photos don’t really blow us away, but they’re just right for average use. We have no complaints here. And the HDR performance was really good. Because the shadows were well exposed even in sunny conditions and the sky was rarely overexposed.
You also get a secondary ultra-wide camera here, and it’s not sharp at all, but it still makes for some cool photos from your vacation.
Zooming isn’t something we recommend as there’s no dedicated lens for it, but some shots are pretty good and the colors are pretty nice by the way.

The subject is cropped quite well in most cases and the selfie camera is also quite nice when there is enough light.
A complaint from us. Night mode would be a good feature to include here as some people find it quite useful and its lack limits us in what photos we can take at night.
For example, you can’t really see the face here, so our colleague had to move to a place with more light.
And here we also get a macro camera, which we think is mainly a gimmick. It produces good colors and takes pictures from a long distance, but it really isn’t that sharp and we would have preferred the budget elsewhere.

The videos aren’t too shabby though. You can record up to 1080p at 30 frames per second. It’s not really great or anything, but at least the quality is perfect for some family videos or something during the holidays. But one more thing we should mention, the microphone on this device had some trouble picking up voices when there is background noise, so keep that in mind if you plan on recording video in a crowded place or near a busy street. And don’t expect any kind of video stabilization, which can be a bigger problem if you really plan on shooting on foot.
Let’s put it this way, it’s not winning races, but it’s not frustratingly slow or jerky either.
The Galaxy A12 is equipped with a budget Helio P35 SoC. It’s not really meant for gaming or anything, so it struggled when we tried Minecraft on it, but watching videos and browsing the web are some of the things it does with ease. We’ve mostly browsed Reddit and watched a bit of YouTube and managed to keep up, with a few hiccups.
We also noticed that it didn’t really get too hot while playing Minecraft, so that’s cool. Does not make any sense.

You’ll notice that apps take a while to open, but once they do, they generally work just fine. Having such a weak processor also has the surprising advantage of using very little power.
Battery How big is it? The battery capacity you get here is about 5000 mAh. And it’s just great. You can expect more than 2 days of use if you don’t use the phone too much. But again, like any other device on the market, if you use it all the time, you’ll probably need to charge it the same day. You get a fast charger in the box for free, but keep in mind that “fast” here is just 15 watts, and it takes a few hours to fully charge this battery.
You get an interesting blue textured design, a pretty good camera for those family vacations, decent performance for anything but gaming, and a battery so big that the engineers probably had to give the phone a little extra room in the back.
But we’re not sure if this is a perfect device at this price. She sacrifices herself in her performance. For example, for about the same price you can get the Oneplus Nord N100 and it comes with a more powerful processor and decent camera performance.

Or if you’re looking for something even more powerful, the Moto G Power has a Snapdragon 662 that wipes the floor with the A12 for just $20 more.
So it depends a bit more on preferences and what exactly you need in a device. Overall, we’re generally impressed with what budget phones can do these days, but what about you?

One UI has been very consistent from phone to phone and between releases, so not much is missing on the A12, v2.5 or otherwise, to begin with. The lock screen is a familiar sight with a few shortcuts in the bottom corners and notification icons below the clock. Since this is an LCD phone, it does not support Always-On Display.

For unlocking, the fingerprint sensor on the side is the most obvious choice. It takes a reasonable number of taps to adjust and works well for both the left index finger and right thumb.
As with other such implementations, you run the risk of activating the sensor on skin contact by simply holding the phone in your pocket, resulting in a locked phone and a non-functional sensor when you pull it out to use it. If it bothers you more often than you would like, you can activate the sensor by simply pressing the button – otherwise the click is not necessary.
