It’s 2021 and we already have the S21 trio of high-end Samsung phones to review. At the opposite end of the Galaxy spectrum is the Galaxy A12 (12, not 21) – an entry-level handset designed to deliver the Samsung experience, on a budget.

Announced late last year and available since January, the Galaxy A12 isn’t the most affordable phone Samsung sells – the Galaxy M02 takes that title. Samsung’s nomenclature is a bit better at the lower end and it can be confusing what’s between the A and M series, but the A12 is below the M12 and above the M02s. Not all of these models are available globally, so you may or may not be able to get the most affordable Samsung in your particular neck of the woods.

The Galaxy A12 we have here is equipped with a 6.5-inch screen and the results of the budget restriction are easily noticeable. It’s one of the few OLED-influenced LCDs in the Galaxy lineup, and the 720p resolution is also on the low side of average for the diagonal. It’s a fairly standard combination of size, technology and resolution for the segment, so the A12 isn’t really impressive.
The Mediatek Helio P35 is doing the math inside the A12 and even that in itself isn’t a particularly exciting piece of hardware. Again, though, it’s perfectly fine for the price point – you’re getting an octa-core CPU, and the chip is built on a 12nm fabrication process, so it should be quite powerful and frugal at the same time.
The quad camera setup on the back actually makes a strong case for the Galaxy A12 in its market context. While the utility of the two 2MP modules is debatable (one for depth data, the other for ‘macro’), the 48MP main camera and 5MP ultra-wide make for a good tandem that’s hard to find. An 8MP selfie camera completes the picture in the imaging department.
One last important thing – the Galaxy A12 is powered by a 5,000mAh battery, and that’s a lot of battery for an entry-level 12nm chip and a 720p, likely 6.5-inch display. We expect solid numbers for battery life.

The Galaxy A12 comes in a simple package with a simple cardboard box inside the sleeve, with the likeness of the phone printed on top. You get a few essentials – a 15W adapter and a USB-C cable and that’s it.
The phone is fine. Programmers must be removed and replaced. The software is terrible. Customers are not given any option to keep the old software or opt out of updates for example the calendar.
Everything works fine, the camera takes poor quality photos. It’s hard to criticize a £169 smartphone that looks this good and lasts this long between charges, but the Galaxy A12’s disappointing performance more than makes up for the poison. It’s so boring that it’s hard to recommend it to anyone. The good news is that it’s possible to buy a solid all-around device at a price without compromising the user experience. The Motorola Moto G8 costs £179 and does everything the Galaxy A12 does well, but without any lag.

What this budget-friendly phone brings to the table is a decent 48MP primary camera, great battery life, and Samsung’s clear and attractive One UI software. Unfortunately, peripheral cameras are lacking in the works, and slow performance can be disappointing, but these are expected compromises at this price point. We’ve mentioned that the Galaxy A12 comes in around Motorola’s Moto G Power (2022) ($199), and while both seem decent for someone buying their first smartphone, the Galaxy is a much safer choice. The lack of 5G limits its possibilities in the future, though you can try the OnePlus Nord N20 ($282) or get Samsung’s new Galaxy A13 5G ($249) if you want to use higher speeds.
I recommend the Galaxy A03S to anyone looking to spend under $200 on a new Samsung phone. Since it’s the newest of the three phones, it will get an extra year of software and security updates. I also found that it offers respectable performance for the price. While the A12 takes better photos, I didn’t feel the increase in quality was worth the extra $20. Instead, buy the A03S and invest that $20 in the microSD card you need. If you want to check out other phones under $200 that aren’t made by Samsung, Motorola has the $160 Moto G Pure phone and the $200 Moto G Power phone. The OnePlus Nord N200 5G goes just over the $200 mark at $240, but offers 5G connectivity.
Ultimately, it’s hard to think of the Galaxy A12 as a mistake from Samsung. Yes, it has phenomenal battery life and I expect the company to adopt the two-tone look on other handsets, but even at £169 it still misses the mark. A lot depends on what other manufacturers are doing with a budget, but Samsung’s entry-level handsets have been able to hold their own in the past. It’s hard not to find absolute disappointment in the MediaTek Helios MT6765. Exynos and Qualcomm handsets never felt so slow. What should you buy instead? While all the options highlighted in the Price and Competition section will do, my suggestion is the Poco X3 NFC if you can afford to shell out £199. If you can’t, you should pay £169 for the Realme 7 or save £19 and buy the Nokia 5.3.
