About this Samsung Galaxy A51 review: I used the Galaxy A51 on Google Fi for six days. At the time of review, the phone was running One UI 2.1 based on Android 10.
The Samsung Galaxy A51 is made of what Samsung calls “Glasstic”. It offers higher quality than pure plastic phones, but it is not as premium as the Samsung Galaxy S21 series. It’s still plastic, but I didn’t mind the plastic as much as other phones in this price range. The phone is sleek but not sleek and light at just 158 grams. In comparison, the OnePlus 9 Pro weighs 197 grams.
The edge of the device is made of aluminum and feels very high quality. On the right, you’ll find the power button and volume rockers with a USB-C port, speakers, and a headphone jack on the bottom. On the left side of the phone is a dual SIM card slot that can hold two SIM cards and an SD card up to 512GB. While most phones double as a second slot to allow the use of a SIM card or microSD card, the A51 has two dedicated SIM slots and a separate microSD card slot. It’s nice to see that.
Samsung Galaxy A51 Review: Great Screen, Bad Performance
I really like the crazy color and design on the back of the device. It’s really unique, and I appreciate fun colored phones. The model I have is Prism Crush Black, which gives off a rainbow color when the light hits it at the right angle. It also comes in Prism Crush Blue and Prism Crush White, which offer similar iridescent reflections.
The speakers on the phone were loud, but there was no sense of bass. I don’t use the speakers to listen to music directly, but the headphone jack is a big plus.
For a phone under $400, the Samsung Galaxy A51 has a surprisingly good display. Most mid-range phones use LCD instead of OLED, but Samsung has managed to pack in a large OLED screen with a much denser pixel count. 1080p screen. Given that most high-end phones go up to 1080p by default, this didn’t bother me. Colors were bright and vivid, which is typical of Samsung panels. You are cool.
One annoying thing about this display is the hole-punch camera in the middle of the phone. Although I usually like cutouts, Samsung decided to put a silver metal ring around the camera, which makes it more visible than without the ring. It’s not a deal breaker, but it makes you aware even when the display is off. I don’t understand why Samsung did this.

The Galaxy A51 has an in-display optical fingerprint reader. Unfortunately, the fingerprint reader is slow and inaccurate. It took about two seconds to register a fingerprint each time. In addition, when I use the device, the accuracy rate seems to be 50%, which is very bad. For speed and accuracy, it is better to use pin or 2D face unlock option.
With a mid-range Exynos chip and just 4GB of RAM as standard, we didn’t expect the Samsung Galaxy A51 to have great performance. After using the device for a while and running benchmarks, we confirmed our fears.
I haven’t said this about a phone in a while, but the Samsung Galaxy A51 is slow. You may experience lag when opening apps and multitasking, and stuttering occurs when swiping around the UI. The phone used 1.9GB of 4GB of RAM even with all apps closed, which is a very bad sign. In our tests, we concluded that modern versions of Android need about 6GB of RAM to run properly, and this is confirmed by the device.
In benchmarks, we saw a similar story. In our tests, the phone lags behind most devices. It has lagged behind other mid-rangers since its launch, with a series of Snapdragon 700 phones outperforming the Galaxy A51’s Exynos processor. Check out the results below.

The Samsung Galaxy A51 has a large 4000 mAh battery. With a low power processor and a small amount of RAM, you can hope that the device can outlast the battery life. Honestly, it wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t as bad as it should have been. The call lasted 29 hours, from 8am one day to 1pm the next. It’s not quite as good as phones with bigger batteries, but I’m glad it lasts at least a day. I got about four and a half hours of screen time on this device.
The A51 supports 15W charging, which is not very fast. Considering the original Google Pixel supported 18W charging in 2016, this feels slow in 2020. Samsung’s flagship Galaxy S20 devices charge at 25W by default, so I’d like to see at least 18W on the Galaxy A51.
For a phone under $400, the Galaxy A51 has excellent cameras, and quite a few to boot. There’s a 48-megapixel primary sensor that packs 12MP photos, along with wide-angle and macro lenses, a depth sensor, and a 32MP front-facing camera.
Dynamic range looked good on this camera set, but images felt a bit underexposed – perhaps to avoid bringing out the highlights. That being said, some camera systems can push the shadows too high to adjust, resulting in annoying gray casts in the shadows. Samsung phones have traditionally done this, so I was surprised to see that the A51 didn’t.
Samsung Galaxy A53 5g
Colors were generally good, but the A51 was saturated with certain colors like blues and greens. It can light up the sky and vegetation, but it makes other images look cartoonish. Samsung has been doing this with its camera systems, so I’m not surprised at all.
The depth sensor seems to help a bit and I’m glad it worked more with people than animals. Object detection and cropping were very accurate, although the bokeh looked a little natural. I was pleasantly surprised. Hair detection remained blurry, but this is normal for fake bokeh. This formula also softens the skin more than I would like.
The selfie camera was also good with good dynamic range and color. The clarity was very good, but it was still full of colors like green and blue.
The MSRP of the Samsung Galaxy A51 has dropped to just $349.99, and you can get it for much less. If you shop around, you can get a phone for under $300. At this price, it’s hard to ignore the value Samsung is offering with the phone.
Samsung Galaxy A51 Test
With the A51, you get a really nice screen, decent quality, some great cameras and a headphone jack. It also offers three years of guaranteed software updates that ensure support up to at least Android 12. However, while the build quality and screen are good, the poor performance of this phone is its Achilles heel. And with a retail price of $349, the competition is very high.
The iPhone SE has Apple’s newest processor and excellent build quality for the same price, while the Google Pixel 4a has an amazing Android experience and an excellent camera for $350. If you’re willing to spend more than $1,000, Samsung also offers the Samsung Galaxy S20 FE, which has many of the same features as the full-fledged Galaxy S20. If you want something similar with a little more power, the Samsung Galaxy A71 is also out, as is the Galaxy A51 5G – an upgraded version of the A51 with a faster chipset and a bigger battery.
If you are looking for Samsung’s latest mid-range device, you can also check out the Galaxy A52 5G. It maintains solid build quality and plenty of battery life while upgrading to the Snapdragon 750G SoC. You’ll pay a bit more at $499, but the upgrade is worth the margin. Samsung hasn’t made many changes to the near-weak cameras, but the move to 25W charging solves one of our biggest gripes with the Galaxy A51.
