Cameras: First and foremost, the Note 8 Pro’s quad-camera system isn’t as exciting as it first sounds, to be honest. One is the depth sensor, the other is macro photography, and then there is the wide angle and fixed lens. The Note 7 Pro only has the standard lens and depth sensor, so it’s still a nice upgrade. We will get to know the cameras later. The resolution of the new selfie camera has been increased from 13 megapixels to 20 megapixels in last year’s model.

Chipset: While the Note 7 Pro uses the Qualcomm Snapdragon 675, the Note 8 Pro switches to the MediaTek Helio G90T chipset. It handles gaming very well and doesn’t feel like the Note 8 Pro suffers in terms of performance. You might be disappointed to find that there’s no Snapdragon functionality here, but you really don’t need to worry.
Design: The Note 8 Pro uses the new design style of the 8 series, combining Gorilla Glass 5 on the front and a polycarbonate frame on the back. I like the plastic face because it’s not cheap, helps keep costs down, and offers slightly better impact resistance than metal. Nevertheless, the Note 8 Pro is quite heavy at 200 grams.
The Redmi Note 8 Pro’s display is an IPS LCD, which is a shame considering you can get OLED panels at this price. While it’s not great, it’s still pretty good for an LCD screen. It’s very bright and looks great, with a relatively shallow color palette and good contrast. If you like your screens very saturated, you won’t like it, but that’s okay.
The Note 8 Pro has a good dark mode and enough contrast levels that it doesn’t look gray despite the LCD panel. The resolution is good enough for me, but the panel is a bit cool from the package. The display can be adjusted to cool or warm and has a color wheel for subtle adjustments. You also have several contrast options, so changing it to your liking is very easy. The Redmi Note 8 Pro’s battery life is good as long as you don’t use the highest screen brightness settings all the time. It comes with an 18W charger and supports USB-PD and Quick Charge 4.0. In my test, Xiaomi’s claim of a full charge in two hours was spot on. It’s not great, but it’s not terrible. A half-hour charge gives you up to 35%, while a one-hour charge gives you up to 65%.
The worst battery results were mostly outdoors, using mobile data and taking photos with high screen brightness. These days I can turn on the screen for 3-4 hours. On a typical day, I averaged between four and six hours if I adjusted the settings to be half indoors, half outdoors. My best days were delivered in over eight hours because I was connected to Wi-Fi all day and the screen brightness was low.
Yes it is, and it’s very good. The Note 8 Pro performed very well in the headphone audio test. Even if you don’t rely on wired headphones all the time, the Note 8 Pro is protected with a wireless phone. SBC, AAC and LDAC offer options for basic and high-end Bluetooth codecs, but the Note 8 Pro does not ship with the necessary libraries despite AptX, AptX HD, AptX Adaptive appearing in the developer 1 10. Like wired audio, the Note 8 Pro fared very well against the competition on Bluetooth thanks to LDAC.
The only real let down here is the mono subwoofer, which, while good, isn’t as loud or sharp as I’d like. It’s not exactly made or broken, but it’s good to know if you like speakers more than headphones.

The Note 8 Pro has a LiquidCool vapor chamber for heat removal. Playing or running comparisons, I never noticed the chassis getting warm to the touch. Combine this with HyperEngine’s game optimization – switch to a combination of Wi-Fi and mobile data if the Wi-Fi signal is weak – and you shouldn’t experience any stuttering or screen drops while gaming. The Note 8 Pro can also connect to both 2.4GHz and 5GHz Wi-Fi networks simultaneously.

It won’t be easy for MediaTek (or me) to convince gamers that the G90T will please them. I recommend going to a store where you can try it yourself. I wouldn’t consider myself a mobile gamer, but from what I saw during my Note 8 Pro review period, Qualcomm silicon isn’t everything. The G90T will definitely work well on the Note 8 Pro.
It is complicated. The Note 8 Pro’s camera varies between surprisingly good and not good at all. In daylight, the 64-megapixel Samsung GW1 beats the 16-megapixel, with plenty of detail and good contrast. When zooming the results, quite a bit of post-processing takes place and the over-sharpening is clearly visible. Fortunately, the colors are not oversaturated and look natural.
64MP manual switching in daylight is a satisfying step forward. The 64 megapixel footage preserves this detail and gives you more freedom afterwards. They take up much more space than pixelated images (18MB vs. 7MB). However, I was impressed with the quality of the Redmi Note 8 Pro’s 64MP photos. The 64MP sensor gives you options in low light, as native pixel binning means you can capture more light data with 16MP. If you are very stable, you can take good pictures at night. You can even shoot at 64MP at night, and I often prefer the 16MP version for the naturalness of these images.

The night mode was generally very good, but the results were not always reliable. You really need to lean on something to get super sharp images in night mode. If you get it right, night mode offers the best results you’ll get from the Note 8 Pro. Night mode captures highlights well without overexposing dark spots. Whether you’re in night mode or 16MP mode, there’s still some visible noise at night, and don’t even think about taking pictures while moving.
A wide-angle camera is fun during the day, but I wouldn’t hold it at night. For example, in the wide-angle shot above, look at the sparkling points of light and the gorgeous purple sky. The lack of versatility here is disappointing, which makes me wonder why Xiaomi bothered to use a wide-angle lens that it doesn’t use properly.
It’s the same story with the 2 megapixel macro camera. It’s fun, but it suffers from over-sharpening and it’s not a novelty you rarely use. The depth, macro and wide angle lenses are not as good as the main camera.
The 2 megapixel depth sensor should theoretically offer better bokeh and cleaner edge detection in portrait mode. I couldn’t tell the difference between pictures taken in portrait mode and other pictures when I closed it with my finger. As with most cameras, the sharpness and naturalness of portrait mode images has been highly controversial. If you ask me, depth, macro and wide angle lenses are not as good as the best shooters.
