Of all the collections I look forward to seeing every Christmas, Pierre Marcolini’s pieces stand out for their elegance and beauty. It’s a love affair that started with my first visit to Brussels a few years ago, with the enchanting Christmas window display that captured my heart. Despite the fact that 2020 is an erasure, it does not stop Pierre Marcolini from creating many festival pieces as you can see here.

They sent me their advent calendar for 2020 so I can see for myself what you can expect if you decide to buy luxury Belgian chocolate this season. So, bear with me as I look inside.

The beautiful Advent calendar is as grand and elegant as you would expect from Pierre Marcolini. It is a strong and sturdy box, 40cm x 33cm high and 5cm deep.
The box is decorated with a cartoon illustration in the form of a Christmas tree shaped like children’s toys in muted blue, red and pink. There are rocking horses and teddy bears, toy trains and drums. Above, a stocking hangs from a wreath with a candy cane in the center, A golden star shines above.
Rose gold-foiled detailing adds sparkle to the face and all four sides of the box, where shiny stripes interweave soft pink stripes. The Pierre Marcolini logo is also used illustrations wise in many places.
On the back of the box, a large white circle details all the chocolates hidden inside. Once again, the star adorning the shimmer failed to print.

Ingredients Pierre Marcolini Advent Calender 2020: Sugar, cocoa beans, cocoa butter, powdered milk cream, hazelnuts, almonds, feuilletine (contains: gluten, soy, milk), pistachios, marzipan (contains: almonds), cream, glucose, lactose, passion fruit fruit pulp, raspberry pulp, cashew nuts, pine nuts, nougat (contains: almonds and eggs), water, non-GMO soy lecithin, caramel (contains: milk), dextrose, lime juice, walnuts, sorbitol , butter, honey, grapeseed oil, salt, Madagascar vanilla, raspberry vinegar, glycerin, passion fruit vinegar, orange zest, coloring agents (E129, E102 and E162).
There is also a notice advising that “E129 and E102 may have an adverse effect on the activity and attention of children”.
The website calculates that, on average, the sugar level in this Advent calendar is about 38%.
The advent calendar is closed with a bright pink ribbon. Gently pull it out and open the door on both sides, so that the calendar can stand upright. Do it and it has a footprint up to 80cm wide and up to 25cm deep, so it needs to be displayed in a special place. This is definitely a luxurious statement piece.

Inside, the illustration continues. It draws on the cover image but now features four squirrels emptying mailboxes, climbing ladders to decorate trees, and carrying presents wrapped in presents. Like the cover image, it also uses a color palette of muted blues, reds and pinks and also features a rose gold plated print.
No doubt about it, the advent calendar is captivating. It’s also very tactile. I can’t help but look at it and caress the smooth finish of the solid wood. This is luxury packaging done right.
Now, it is very wrong to look inside before December. It’s like hiding your Christmas presents before December 25th, and lots of them. But if you don’t say it, neither will I!
Hidden behind 24 circular doors (or windows) sit a variety of luxury chocolate treats. On average, they weigh 7 grams a piece. They are smaller than your typical Belgian chocolate candy, but they are unusual by any means.

Try to resist drooling with this chocolate menu. I put them in alphabetical order in case you share the same calendar and want every day to be a surprise.
My only complaint so far is that each chocolate is covered in a plastic lid which hides the chocolate inside the plastic tray. After opening the door, you need to remove the plastic cover to remove the chocolate. I understand why the extra plastic packaging is used but it just feels redundant. Plastic trays and lids can be recycled in many kerbside schemes as can board boxes – although it will be difficult to remove them at the end of December. I intend to see if I can reuse the outer box as a waste paper storage file, or perhaps, a chocolate storage box.
Ate some of my chocolate (for research purposes you understand). From what I’ve sampled, it’s Marcolini’s reputation for full-bodied chocolate with a clear flavor that’s on top.
My favorites include Passion Heart in orange, white chocolate Pistachio & Praline Caramel in red, and Câlin Milk Chocolate. Golf Balls and Ducks also look interesting.
