MyBB 1.8 will feature a new default theme based on the Apart theme series by MyBB lead designer Justin S. A brand new theme-related feature has been announced:

[Attachable primary colors] allows you to create colors to which you can attach style sheets (just like you can attach style sheets to pages). You can also set the display order of all your style sheets so that they can override the styles. Together, the changes mean you can add themes with as many custom colors as you want. Using the theme/child layout component that already exists in 1.x, you can prevent or allow specific groups of users to use these colors, and since they inherit from the base stylesheets, it’s very easy to control them. So you no longer need to install several different themes for a different color theme.
