By not changing things too much, the Galaxy M31 looks and feels similar to the Galaxy M30s, both good and bad. The good thing is that the smartphone offers all the right features to make it a solid Rs 15,000 smartphone. The downside is that the Galaxy M31’s design and specifications may not match the other slim and powerful smartphones set to launch soon in this segment.

As mentioned earlier, the Samsung Galaxy M31 comes with a standard design. It looks very similar to the Galaxy M30s in that it has a monolithic plastic panel on the back with a rear-mounted fingerprint sensor and a square camera module in the upper left corner. The front of the Samsung Galaxy M31 is also very familiar, as you are greeted by a 6.4-inch full HD+ (2,340 x 1,080) Super AMOLED Infinity-U display, like its predecessors. The screen has a U-shaped protrusion that houses the selfie camera and the chin is thick.
The Samsung Galaxy M31 is a thick phone and feels a little heavy in the hand, so you will tire of holding it after a while. The smartphone comes in blue, black and red color options. Thanks to the glossy back, the Galaxy M31 has a magnet that attracts fingerprints and smudges, something that is especially noticeable on the black version we received for review. The biggest upgrade of the Galaxy M31 is the camera. The smartphone has a 64MP quad camera setup on the back compared to the 48MP triple camera system on the Galaxy M30s. The new setup includes a 64MP f/1.8 Samsung GW1 primary sensor, an 8MP ultra-wide-angle lens, a 5MP depth camera, and a 5MP macro lens. The advanced settings are flexible, allowing users to have more ways to take pictures.
The Galaxy M31’s main camera takes great daytime photos. With scene enhancement enabled, the camera uses a lot of software processing to enhance colors, which you may prefer over more natural tones. So if you’re photographing flowers, for example, blue flowers will look blue and pink ones may look red. The images are warm, which means you won’t be able to capture natural white tones. Overall, I found the daytime shots lacking in contrast and dynamic range compared to the Redmi Note 8 Pro in this segment.
The main camera can focus quickly on subjects during the day, but this gets a little blurry as the sun goes down. By default, the main camera shoots at 16MP and uses pixel binning to deliver bright and sharp images. You can manually scale up to 3:4 64MP to capture high-resolution photos. However, 64MP photos will look dark, lack HDR support, and should only be used during the day if you want to capture a wide area to zoom in later.

Switching from the main camera, the Samsung Galaxy M31’s 8MP wide-angle camera helps capture beautiful wide-angle photos during the day. Colors look good and there is enough detail as long as you don’t zoom in and squint at the pixels. Portrait mode using Live Focus mode can take pictures with bokeh effect as long as the blurring effect is not too strong. Skin tones look warm and soft, but there is good detail to be found.
Finally, we have a large 5MP camera that can get closer to the subject up to 3cm. Also, best used during the day, large cameras allow you to take close-up art. Macros can look clear and detailed as long as the subject remains. However, colors are often muted and washed out compared to the natural bokeh that can be captured with the main camera.
The Galaxy M31 captures videos very well. Both the front and rear cameras can record UHD video. The main camera also supports Super Steady mode, which does a great job at keeping videos from stuttering when shooting handheld.
Samsung has also upgraded the front camera from 16MP to 32MP, which means selfies will be sharper on the Galaxy M31. While this is true and the selfie camera captures fine detail in clothing and hair, it still smooths out faces even though the beauty mode is turned off. The front camera also supports Live Focus, allowing you to adjust the intensity of the bokeh in real time. The higher the bokeh, the more unnatural the subject separation looks.

Overall, the Samsung Galaxy M31 comes with a flexible camera setup that allows you to take photos from various angles. And while the 64MP quad-cad system sounds like a nice upgrade thanks to the extra large lens, it doesn’t feel like a quad-camera setup compared to the competition in this segment.

Right out of the box, the Samsung Galaxy M31 feels as snappy as you’d expect from a brand new smartphone. Scrolling through One UI 2.0 is smooth, and apps open quickly, too. During our week-long usage, we didn’t experience any lag or lag when using a variety of everyday apps like texting, browsing social media, and more.
The Exynos 9611 is a mid-range processor that can handle everyday tasks with ease. It can also run graphics-intensive games like PUBG at high frame rates and graphics settings automatically. We played a 30-minute PUBG session on default settings, which worked flawlessly. At extreme graphics settings, we noticed that the phone was hot to the touch while playing games.
