M31s recently released is not a brand new phone, but it can at some point paint the predecessor and give the same phone with a couple of tweaks. Samsung believes the changes will convince users to choose M31s over Redmis and Pocos.

The ‘glastik’ (glass-like plastic) back isn’t bad and feels quite premium compared to the M31. The ‘Mirage Blue’ dual-tone finish looks a little shiny. The straight sides and slightly rounded corners look great, as does the overall build quality. Yes, it catches fingerprints, but you can easily remove them.

On the M31s, there’s a nice satisfying ‘click’ when you press the power button (correctly).
I like how the power button (which also has a fingerprint reader) is a little hard to press. I believe this is on purpose, so that the phone does not lock when you tap the power button to confirm the app. This was the problem when I reviewed the small, but powerful Galaxy S10e a year ago. On the M31s, there’s a nice satisfying ‘click’ when you press the power button (correctly).
Most smartphone brands don’t get their punches right. The large hole cavity is usually placed inside the display area which takes twice as much space as the notification bar takes up in a regular smartphone.
Samsung did a great job keeping the camera unit (or hole) small and only 3-4mm from the top edge of the screen. The result? It doesn’t eat into the display but essentially gives you more viewing space by taking up less space than a regular water drop notch.

Super AMOLED panels are known for their deep blacks. The panel on this phone does not disappoint, even if you can’t compare the good stuff that you get in the mid-range with the A series. Some prefer the standard ‘Vivid’ color mode, but I find it a bit oversaturated, with red appearing borderline orange. With it set to ‘Natural’, colors appear spot-on and deep blacks compared to regular LCD panels make for a truly enjoyable video streaming experience. Brightness is not an issue as the subject is clear in direct sunlight.
In fact, the display costs more than the more affordable LCD alternatives from the Chinese smartphone brand.
Given the Exynos 9611 chipset inside, the M31s doesn’t feel as snappy as I would like. But it’s still pretty smooth, and I haven’t seen any hiccups in daily use, save for some minor stuttering when juggling between third-party apps.

A UI itself is also designed, with an emphasis on large icons and the use of one hand, where all UX elements (in the native app) are brought to the lower half of the display. Add that AMOLED display to the mix and you also get features like an always-on display — which is bigger than a normal phone battery — without affecting battery life.
If you’re not a fan of Xiaomi’s MIUI, you should try One UI, which is a great, ad-free custom Android skin.
The Sony 64 MP sensor gets the job done with warm color tones and a good level of detail whether it’s cloudy or low-light. In dim light, the sound creeps in a bit, but under control even in dark scenes. Impressive.
