Apple talks about the so-called “no sound problem”. Going into this review, I was sure that I preferred the new iPhone 12 mini that I was testing at the same time. I’m wrong. Ultimately, the appeal of the iPhone 12 Pro Max proved hard to ignore: it’s Apple’s best large iPhone to date, and it’s worth it if you can handle its sizeable dimensions.
If you’re considering the Apple iPhone 12 Pro Max, you have a few decisions to make. The first is whether you want a phone this big, especially since the smaller iPhone 12 Pro already packs a 6.1-inch screen. Once you’ve set it up, it’s time to store it
(It’s worth noting that unlike the regular iPhone 12, the Pro Max costs the same whether you want an unlocked model or buy it directly from a carrier.)
Like the rest of the iPhone 12 lineup, the Pro Max cuts a striking figure close to the last few iPhone generations. Inspired in part by Apple’s redesigned iPad Pro, the Pro Max has smooth and angled flat, stainless steel edges that quickly pick up fingerprints while keeping an eye on it. (They especially stand out in my gold review unit.) Not everyone will appreciate Apple’s design choices this year, but the new look sets fan favorites like the iPhone 4 and 5 and Pro Max apart from the rest. Gives a feeling. It’s important to note that the iPhone 12 Pro Max is slightly thinner than last year’s larger iPhones. If you break the calipers, the difference seems minimal, but trust me – every millimeter counts when we’re talking about the big tools you wear all day. That said, it’s a bit heavier than the iPhone 11 Pro Max, but not so much that most people will be concerned. Overall, Apple’s nipping and tweaking means the 12 Pro Max is easier to use than last year’s model, and that’s a big deal.
Other than that, the 12 Pro Max shares a lot with the iPhone 12 Pro. Its stainless steel body and frosted glass eliminate smudged fingerprints and reduce the risk of spills around. It has an IP68 rating for water and dust resistance and has a similar shutter-resistant ceramic shield that covers the display. Remember, “break resistance” is not the same as “scratch resistance”. At one point during my testing, the screen got an obvious dent on the edge of the screen, and I can’t for the life of me tell you how or when it happened. However, I am sure this will not be the last incident.
Pro Max supports a full range of MagSafe devices, but most of them are forgettable. Aside from some neat cases, the most notable example is the Apple MagSafe wireless charging pad. Charging at 15W, or twice what you get with a standard Qi wireless charger. Honestly, though – and I’ll elaborate on this in another story – wireless charging is still too inadequate for me to fully embrace it. Yes, it’s easy, but there is considerable evidence to suggest that the widespread use of wireless charging can have a negative impact on the environment. The jury is still out on the extent of the impact, but if the rumors are true and Apple plans to make a portless iPhone, expect more on this topic.
Credit to Apple for managing to squeeze in an even bigger display. At 6.7 inches, this Super Retina XDR screen is the largest screen Apple has ever packed into an iPhone, and it’s both beautiful and a little scary. The beauty part is self-explanatory: it’s bright enough for outdoor use, and the OLED display boosts its brightness to 1,200 nits when watching HDR video.

The one main knock against it is that, unlike every semi-decent Android phone, this screen only refreshes at 60Hz. Leaks released ahead of Apple’s big event strongly suggest the 12 Pro has all the necessary hardware to do it – they don’t. Maybe it’s to extend the battery life of the company’s first 5G phone, maybe it’s something else. Apple is betting that people won’t miss it, and maybe that’s true, but once you’ve experienced faster screens, it’s hard to go back.
Why is this issue dangerous, well, check it out. A few people I’ve spoken to already think the 6.1-inch iPhone 12 is too big to offer the Pro Max.
Screen to navigate. Yes, it’s a bit easier to handle because of its new design, but the Pro Max will obviously be too much of a phone for some people.
On the other hand, Apple’s continued emphasis on flat screens means you’re less likely to accidentally touch the edge of the Pro Max’s display when you stop to reach for something with your finger. This may very well be “my” problem, but it’s common with curved displays on high-end Android devices, and it’s annoying. Everything has been said, except for you

The last and perhaps most important thing that the Pro Max shares with the rest of this year’s iPhones is Apple’s new A14 Bionic chipset. This is the fourth time I’ve tested a phone using the A14, and some of you may know: Apple’s new chipset packs a significantly faster CPU, GPU, and neural engine than last year’s A13, which It is very fast in itself. . Like the smaller 12 Pro, the Pro Max also has 6GB of RAM, while I should note that this year’s non-Pro models only have 4GB. There isn’t a huge performance difference compared to the regular iPhone 12, but the extra RAM gives the 12 Max headroom when iOS and apps get more complex.
And that’s it. You do very little: throw this thing on for gaming, multitasking, whatever. You are covered. As I said in our iPhone 12 review video, the level of performance you get here is more than 2020 standards, and that means Apple is reportedly going for its first Apple Silicon Mac. It uses a souped-up version of its chipset. Now it’s easy to overestimate the performance of this phone – what new iPhone isn’t super fast at launch? – But you will appreciate it in a few years.
The Pro Max works well with all US 5G networks, I’m not stopping here. High-end 5G phones aren’t all that new, and how good your experience is depends on who your carrier is and where you use it.
