Update Intro Camera Review – As someone who has many – many – cameras and display sets from various eras, my favorite types of cameras this year are shorts and old numbers. It’s more comfortable to have a cheap camera on you when you travel than it is to lug around a high-end DSLR, and you can still get great photos. However, small cameras come with drawbacks. Their lenses are usually not of the best quality, and their small cameras reduce light. These are issues that the Ricoh GR series aims to completely eliminate, packing professional-quality images into a palm-sized body.
Key features with the GR IIIx are a 24 megapixel APS-C image sensor and a 26.1 millimeter lens that opens to an f/2.8 aperture. The device measures 23.5 by 15.6mm: not as large as a 35mm full-frame, but about four times the size of the one-inch screen found on many other devices. When combined with a standard lens, the lens provides a field of view of approximately 40 mm. The only difference between this camera and the original GR III from a few years ago was the 28mm field of view.

Built-in image stabilization opens up more options for night or indoor shooting, helping to reduce camera shake at high speeds. The camera is also equipped with two gigabytes of internal storage. It’s not much, but it can save you money if you forget to bring a memory card.

The overall appearance of the GR IIIx is largely unchanged from the GR III. In fact, most of them have remained the same since the introduction of the first GR model in 1996. External dimensions measure 109 x 62 x 33 mm: roughly the size of a phone, with some extra thickness at the top. Carrying the Ricoh in a backpack, handbag, briefcase or coat pocket is no problem, but jeans pockets are a tight fit. To maintain that small size, some features must be lost along the way, including integrated lighting and vision. Image processing is done by a large LCD screen on the back.
For on-the-fly setup adjustments, the front panel has a number of intuitive controls, including a rocker switch for displaying the display and a D-pad clickwheel combo for things like ISO and manual use. There is a button for custom maps, and I want more. You can customize what the D-pad button does, but that means losing access to useful functions like white balance. Finally, there is the above tutorial with two custom settings options.
Ergonomically, the GR feels great in the hand, and you can hold it with the same confidence as a full camera. Integrated controls mean you can hold it with just your right hand and still have access to all parts. Press the power button, and the camera will turn on immediately.
The first thing I noticed about the GR is its quick start-up time, which means there’s no waiting between choosing to take a picture and then setting up your shot. Another thing I noticed was that the camera was missing everything. No viewfinder, no flash, no zoom, no screen details. The decorative options almost force you to use the Ricoh the way you need to. It’s not about being you at all.

What it misses is a viewfinder which means relying on the Live View screen for every shot, but that’s how I usually use the camera. It is short. He barely missed the light. As a long-time shy person, a hard lens pushes me out of my comfort zone, and closer to the subject, whether it’s a rock, animal or person. GR is not the tool of choice for capturing distant and fast-moving species. The 2.8 aperture is not very fast for a prime lens, so depth of field is only possible when focusing on small objects. Macro mode is also mapped to a button, allowing the lens to focus as close as 12 centimeters.
The GR IIIx requires you to close the lens for depth of focus and use all the space around you for interesting compositions. As a DSLR user, it’s the opposite of how I normally shoot, but it’s refreshing and challenging to see images from a different perspective.
In daylight, the power of GR is not visible. Not that it takes bad pictures, but the quality will be on par with any other high-end comparison. Unlike many others, however, the lack of layers limits the types of images you can create. On the one hand, it encourages you to move your legs and be creative, but there will always be some situations where you physically cannot stand.
The presence of 24 megapixels is the farm-ability to reduce this. There are also digital zoom settings you can use while shooting, which I’ve mapped to a dedicated button. This will give you a 70mm field of view, while showing a smaller file size. However, when you punch the first picture of the picture is actually hit, I can’t tell if the picture is in focus or not.

The camera’s internal light meter often made images too dark for my eyes in bright conditions. I often bump the exposure compensation by a stop, even two, to get the picture I want. It’s worth keeping track of history to make sure your marks don’t slip.
The GR comes with a two-stop ND filter, an option I always like. The filter darkens the image, allowing for an open aperture, low shutter speed, or both in daylight. Specifically, I use this feature to capture motion blur of moving vehicles and people.
Autofocus performance is poor, with more images than I’ll admit to being slightly out of focus at full size. Multi-point focus usually tries to capture the ground, rather than what I’m referring to. It misses a lot more than my 15 year old Canon point n shoot. An easy way to do this is to put the camera in focus mode, where you can select a specific object to focus on by tapping on the background. Automatic face detection is great if you’re taking pictures, but subjects can be lost if you’re not looking directly through the lens. Animal tracking is also not available. The Ricoh continues to focus with key lock-on, but the system is a bit slow to respond.
Manual focus uses a rear click wheel for adjustment, and I found it took a long time to dial. Especially for photographers, there is a handy option in the quick menu to set the lens right at the end to focus.

A key feature of the GR range is its ‘snap focus’ feature, which forces the lens to ‘snap’ at a set distance between the meter and the lens u when the shutter button is pressed quickly. This fast way of focusing is almost impossible to measure accurately with a wide open lens, so depth of field will be your friend.
The GR IIIx is equipped with the standard specifications and colors you’d expect from any camera, but there are also plenty of other options for creative photo filters. The Fine Image setting is probably my favorite option of all, it gives any image beautiful color and contrast.
It also comes with four clear black and white options: Monotone, Soft Monotone, Hard Monotone and High Contrast B&W. This is why many people actually buy Ricoh cameras for their black and white capabilities. Of the four, the first three versions have significant differences in tone and contrast, but the fourth option shows all your photos as A-Ha videos.
The remaining color options – bleach bypass, retro and cross processing – are trivial, but can look good in the right settings. Finally, the HDR audio is really bad. Each of these profiles contains audio controls such as sharpness, saturation, and image grain. Two conventional locations are available for storing these data sets in memory.

A wide range of data options means you can pull great-looking JPEGs straight from the camera, which I did for most of the photos in this review, although I recommend you keep a hard copy of your photos. This is because GR has special development features in the catalog that allow you to edit photos and upload new photo information after the fact. It doesn’t have all the options of a photo editing program like Lightroom, but it gives you a surprising amount of creative freedom without ever touching a computer.
