Admittedly, the Nokia G20 is notable for the Helio G35 chipset with eight Cortex-A53 cores. For reference, the A53 was announced in 2012 and replaced by the A55 in 2017. The T606 also has two Cortex-A75 cores from 2017, but they are “bigger” cores and offer much higher performance. The six A55 cores paired with the A75 are also faster and more energy efficient than their predecessors.

This is where our appreciation starts to run out. The 6.5” display has the same 720p+ resolution as the G20. A 1080p+ display would be a good reason to recommend this phone – such displays are common in this price range, but there are few options.

Talking about the price, the Nokia G21 starts at €170, which is €10 more than the 20. This is a precarious position as you can buy a more capable phone for just 10-30 euros more. For example, the Redmi 10 costs €10 more and has 1080p+ at 90 Hz. The Moto G31 and Galaxy M21 2021 are in the same price bracket and have 1080p+ AMOLED panels. You can buy a 5G phone for 200 euros or less, which is beyond the capabilities of the Unisoc T606.
You can point out that Nokia comes with pure Android, unlike Galaxy and Redmi (but unlike Motorola). Sure, but HMD decided to pre-install ExpressVPN and Spotify, which doesn’t look good if you’re after purity.
One major concern is that the phone comes with Android 11. HMD promises 2 years of OS upgrades, so look out for Android 13. And then Android 13 next year and then maybe that’s it. Well, most phones in this price range don’t run Android 12 yet, but HMD doesn’t seem to have an advantage here.
The new 50MP camera is the highlight of the phone, but there are some surprising details about the sensor and lens. Instead, HMD focused on super resolution and night mode features. We’ll test ourselves to see how well they work, but we can’t be distracted enough to notice what’s wrong.

The Nokia G20 had an ultrawide camera – with a 5MP sensor, it wasn’t great or anything, but it was there. The Nokia G21 camera only has a macro camera and a depth sensor next to the main module. We’ll take one (or both) of those any day of the week.
Another improvement is the battery. The 5,050 mAh capacity is plenty and the HMD offers 3 days of battery life. That sounds great – and it is, but the G20 had the same capacity and the same promise of 3 days between charges.
The real upgrade is that the phone now supports 18W fast charging (USB Power Supply 3.0). However, it only ships with a 10W charger, so you’ll need to supply your own. Chances are you already have an 18W charger, but a 10W charger is sitting in a drawer. And if you don’t have an 18W charger, this isn’t the upgrade for you (not for free, anyway).
