There is a lot to talk about the Galaxy S21 Ultra 5G. And it should be the company’s flagship smartphone with the latest and greatest combination of hardware and software available. To begin with, let’s come to the overall aesthetics of the phone.

Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra Review: Redemption Never Looked This Good

On the front, the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra could look exactly like its predecessor. Infinity-O hole punch display which is huge even for big hands. The S21 Ultra’s display is now 6.8-inches tall, which is 0.1-inch shorter than its predecessor. The immersive experience features a slightly curved edge-to-edge display that is bright and vibrant. I recently enjoyed using the Galaxy S21 Ultra for streaming and content creation (more on this in the camera section of the review) during my trip to Triund, where I also used the phone as my daily driver .

The Dynamic AMOLED screen comes with a peak brightness of 1500 nits, which is more than bright to use even in direct sunlight. The screen supports HDR10+, which means you get great colors and contrast while watching content on the screen. It also has an adaptive 120Hz refresh rate screen. Samsung has made two small but big improvements here – WQHD+ resolution at 120Hz, and an adaptive refresh rate screen.

Unlike the Galaxy S20 Ultra, you can use the S21 Ultra 5G display at its peak resolution and maximum refresh rate support. I’ve personally used the phone at FHD+ resolution and 120Hz all the time to get some extra battery life, but if you’re someone who wants to use the display to its full potential, the Galaxy S21 Ultra has got you covered. The display’s refresh rate is also adaptive, meaning it automatically changes the refresh rate between 10Hz and 120Hz depending on the task on the screen. I didn’t notice any stuttering and the overall experience was smooth.

When you rotate the phone, you will notice how fresh the design is. Samsung has gone back to the drawing board and given the Galaxy S21 Ultra a major, major design upgrade. First things first, that Phantom Black colour. We’re going to report that the Galaxy S21 Ultra has the best “black” color on any smartphone. The back panel has a matte finish, which feels premium to the touch while keeping fingerprints away.

The design of the camera module is even better which makes the phone look premium from a distance. Samsung has integrated five cameras in the frame of the phone, which looks quite unique. Weighing in at over 225 grams, the tall phone might feel heavy but we felt the weight distribution was on point. I used a phone without a case because using one would hide the lovely color and design, which would be a shame. I also dropped the phone more than three times but there was no scratch or crack. You can say that Corning Gorilla Glass Victus has done its job here.

There is also IP68 certification for water, dust resistance and dual speaker setup. Speakers are loud and clear. Like most flagships, the S21 Ultra doesn’t have a 3.5mm headphone jack.

The Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra 5G has by far the most versatile camera system you can find on a smartphone. It has an improved 108MP primary camera, a 12MP ultrawide sensor and two telephoto lenses – 10MP f/2.4 with 3x optical zoom and 10MP f/4.9 with 10x optical zoom and up to 100x digital zoom.

The versatile camera hardware is not only sturdy on paper, but it also delivers in the real world. Improved Samsung 108MP ISOCELL HM3 sensor clicks great images. Photos taken using the main sensor deliver rich, vibrant colors and plenty of detail. Dynamic range and contrast are also impressive. I liked the performance of the camera even in low light. In Night mode, the camera manages to maintain good detail in the shadows without overblowing the highlights. Samsung has also fixed focus issues that used to affect the S20 Ultra with laser autofocus. The ultrawide camera is also quite good. Yes, there’s a little distortion around the edges but that’s true with most ultrawide shooters. However, the colors are fairly accurate and the temperature matches the main sensor.

Two telephoto lenses are more than just a gimmick. Both the lenses can shoot up to 100x zoom simultaneously. I was very impressed with the overall performance of both lenses. If you want the best usable photos, try sticking to zooming up to 30x. Anything further will result in loss of detail and the introduction of noise. That said, 100x zoom is no longer a gimmick. Depending on what you’re shooting and how far away the subject is, the camera hardware, along with the software, manages to get the best possible results in good light.

I shot the moon several times during my Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra review period and was blown away with the results each time. Samsung uses AI software tricks to complement the hardware and deliver better results. Key features include focus tracking within the camera app and optical image stabilization support for faster focusing, especially when you’re zooming in on objects.

For selfies, the Galaxy S21 Ultra has a 40MP front camera. Images are generally quite sharp and detailed as expected. The colors are also very close to the original and the skin does not tighten. Samsung asks you on setup whether you want a “natural” or “bright” selfie, which I think is a nice touch. Portrait mode offers good edge detection and a slew of modes. It mimics the iPhone’s low-key and high-key mono modes. People on Twitter voted in favor of the Galaxy S21 Ultra’s portrait mode versus the iPhone 12’s 12MP selfie.

How does it compare to the iPhone 12 or iPhone 12 Pro? In terms of colors and general details, the Galaxy S21 Ultra is very close to the iPhone. While the iPhone 12’s colors are closer to real, the Galaxy S21 Ultra shoots more vibrant images without over-saturated images. Night mode performance is also pretty decent but the Galaxy S21 Ultra takes the crown here for offering night mode support across all four sensors. Before the Galaxy S21 Ultra, Samsung’s flagships in India were often criticized in terms of overall performance. The Galaxy Note 20 Ultra 5G and older flagship models arrived in India with an Exynos processor that was not only weak compared to its Qualcomm Snapdragon counterpart but also offered poor efficiency.

Things have changed with the Galaxy S21 Ultra’s Exynos 2100. When Samsung said “Exynos is back”, they probably meant this time. As per online benchmark tests, the 5nm-based Exynos 2100 comes very close to the Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 SoC. Even if you don’t care about benchmark scores, the Exynos 2100 SoC won’t let you down. Samsung surprised us with the overall performance of the S21 Ultra 5G.

During the review period of Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra, we played several games like Call of Duty, Asphalt 9 etc. There was no sign of lag even at the highest possible setting. Surprisingly, the device did not overheat while gaming and was only hot to touch. When we recorded some videos, the top area near the camera module got a bit hot.

Battery life is also pretty impressive. For a phone running 120Hz at all times with FHD+ resolution, the Galaxy S21 Ultra 5G’s 5,000mAh battery gave me over 6 hours of screen-on time (SoT) on most days. The day I shot a lot of pictures and videos, that’s when the battery died inside
