I’m still amazed that you can get a £245 smartphone with a vibrant AMOLED display and two-day battery life. For anyone who consumes content on their phone, the Samsung Galaxy M31 is an absolute bargain, just don’t expect it to surprise you in other areas.
Samsung’s A-series smartphones are a staple in most UK stores, and for good reason. It aims to appeal to the same mid-range crowd currently being observed by Xiaomi and OnePlus. But the Galaxy M series is unrecognizable, despite being an important part of Samsung’s global production.

Having recently been used to the lightweight build of the Pixel 3a XL, the M31 felt like a mammoth by comparison. But with that extra weight comes a heavy feel and lets you know that this is still a solid product, even if it’s on the affordable spectrum.
In this space, the phone has a 6.4-inch screen at the top with a scrolling notch and a minimal chin bezel at the bottom. At just £245, I was surprised how uncompromising the front-facing elements of the phone are. There’s even a 3.5mm headphone jack (albeit on the bottom).

But as soon as you flip the phone over, it starts to feel a little different. For starters, the M31’s plastic backing is an absolute fingerprint magnet, and the Smooth case itself doesn’t grip your hand very well. If you are not sure about the ability to hold your phone without dropping it, we recommend getting a case to be safe.
While there’s a slight camera bump here and there, the four camera sensor array is barely noticeable whether you have the phone in your pocket or sitting on a desk with the screen facing up.
Like the A series, Samsung’s marketing for the M series has focused on three key features: screen, camera, and battery life. When we will get to the end in a moment, I am happy to report that Samsung has nailed the display in the M31 and probably the best feature of the phone (other than the price).

For example, the dedicated fingerprint sensor is fast and reliable (arguably better than some on-screen fingerprint sensors I’ve come across on more expensive handsets). They go to unlock the face with a cool little animation happening under the front camera, so you know it’s done its job.
However, one of the nagging issues that keep cropping up is the mismatch of wearables. While this seems to have improved after a few software updates, the phone will constantly disconnect from the Whoop 3.0 Band smartwatch and the TicWatch C2 Plus. If you’re not a fan of smartwatches, you probably won’t run into this problem, but for a fitness enthusiast like me who likes to track health stats, this has become a royal pain.
If you enjoy mobile gaming on your lunch break, the M31 should take care of most games – just don’t expect it to run Fortnite anytime soon. As the launcher has repeatedly stated, the current Galaxy M31 is not one of the phones optimized to play Fornite, and diving into the game reveals a mess that is almost unplayable. Surprisingly, the M31 had no problems with online matches in Call of Duty: Mobile, and small games like Alto’s Odyssey performed well.
