The Samsung Galaxy A51 is one of Samsung’s biggest mid-range offerings of 2020, the first time Samsung’s A series has been launched in the US, and it’s an affordable option for those who want a Samsung smartphone but don’t want one. Pay $1,000 to get one.

About this Samsung Galaxy A51 review: I used the Galaxy A51 on Google Fi for six days. At the time of review, the phone ran One UI 2.1 based on Android 10.

The Samsung Galaxy A51 is made of a material that Samsung calls “Glasstic”. This gives it a higher quality feel than pure plastic phones, but it’s certainly not as premium as the Samsung Galaxy S21 series. It’s still plastic after all, although I wouldn’t expect the plastic to be as good as other phones in this price range. The phone is sleek but not slippery at just 158g. For comparison, the OnePlus 9 Pro weighs 197 grams.

The edges of the device are aluminum and feel quite premium. On the right side you’ll find the power button and volume rocker, while the bottom has the USB-C port, speaker, and headphone jack. On the left side of the phone is a dual-SIM card tray that can accommodate two SIM cards and an SD card up to 512GB. While most phones double as a secondary slot to allow for a SIM card or microSD card, the A51 has two dedicated SIM cards and a separate microSD card tray. Good to see.

I really like the crazy colors and design on the back of the device. It’s definitely different, and I appreciate phones with fun colors. The model I have is Prism Crush Black, which gives off a rainbow when the light hits it at the right angle. It also features rainbow-colored reflections, similar to Prism Crush Blue and Prism Crush White.

The speaker on the phone is quite loud but lacks bass sense. While the headphone jack is a great addition, I don’t use the speakers directly for listening to music.

For a phone under $400, the Samsung Galaxy A51 has a surprisingly good display. Most mid-range phones use LCDs instead of OLEDs, but Samsung has stuck with large OLED screens with a fairly dense pixel count. It’s a 1080p screen. Since most high-end phones default to 1080p, this didn’t bother me. The colors are soft and bright, which is common on Samsung tablets. This is fantastic.

One thing that annoys this display is the pinhole camera cutout in the middle of the phone. While I usually prefer punch-hole cutouts, Samsung decided to put a silver metal ring around the camera, which is more obvious than without the ring. It’s not a deal breaker, but it forces you to pay attention even when the screen is off. I don’t understand why Samsung did this.

The Galaxy A51 has an in-display optical fingerprint reader. Unfortunately, the fingerprint reader is slow and inaccurate. It took about two seconds to register my fingerprint each time. Additionally, when I was using the device, the accuracy seemed to be around 50%, which is pretty bad. You may be better off choosing a pin lock or even a 2D face lock for speed and accuracy.

Equipped with a mid-range Exynos chip and only 4GB of RAM, we didn’t expect the Samsung Galaxy A51 to have great performance. After using the device for a while and running our benchmarks, we confirmed our concerns.

I haven’t mentioned this phone in a while, but the Samsung Galaxy A51 is slow. You may experience lag when opening apps and multitasking, and the UI is often stuttering when moving around. Even with all apps closed on this phone, 1.9GB of the 4GB RAM is used, which is a bad sign. In our tests, we concluded that modern versions of Android require 6GB of RAM for normal operation, which was confirmed by this device.

We saw a similar story in metrics. In our tests, the phone lags behind most devices. It has lagged even further behind other mid-rangers since its launch, with the Snapdragon 700 series phones far outpacing the Galaxy A51’s Exynos processor. Check out the results below.

The Samsung Galaxy A51 has a relatively large battery. With a low-powered CPU and a small amount of RAM, you’d expect this device to have killer battery life. Honestly, it wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t ideal. The call lasted about 29 hours, from 8am one day to 1pm the next. Of course the battery isn’t as good as the bigger phones, but I’m glad it can last a day at least. I got about four and a half hours of screen time on the device.

The A51 supports 15W charging, which isn’t the fastest. Given that the original Google Pixel had an 18W charger in 2016, it seems a little weak in 2020. Samsung’s flagship Galaxy S20 devices charge 25W by default these days, so I’d like to see at least 18W on the Galaxy A51.

For a phone under $400, the Galaxy A51 has some pretty decent cameras, and quite a few of them to boot. There’s a 48MP main sensor that stores 12MP photos, as well as wide-angle and macro lenses, a depth sensor and a 32MP front-facing camera.

Dynamic range looked good on this camera team, although the shots felt a bit unfocused – perhaps avoiding highlight highlights. This means that some camera systems overextend shadows for dynamic range, creating an annoying gray haze in the shadows. Samsung phones have traditionally done that, so I’m glad to see that the A51 doesn’t.

Colors were generally good, but the A51 tended to oversaturate certain colors like blues and greens. It may make the sky and plants pop, but it makes some images look a bit cartoony. However, Samsung has always done this with their camera systems, so I’m not surprised.

The depth sensor seemed to help a bit, and I’m glad it works for more than just humans and animals. Object detection and cropping were fairly accurate, although the bokeh looked a bit unnatural to the mix. I was pleasantly surprised. Hair definition is still fuzzy, but that’s common with synthetic hair. This mode also tended to soften the skin more than I expected.

The selfie camera is also quite good, with dynamic range and color. Sharpness was quite good, although colors such as greens and blues were still saturated.

The MSRP of the Samsung Galaxy A51 has dropped to just $349.99, and you can get it for even less. You can easily find phones under $300 if you shop around. At this price, it’s hard to ignore the value Samsung offers with the phone.

With the A51, you get a great screen, decent build quality, some great cameras, and even a headphone jack. It also offers three years of guaranteed software updates, ensuring you’ll reach at least Android 12. While the build quality and display are great, the sub-features of this phone are its Achilles heel. It retails for $349 and is very competitive.

The iPhone SE has Apple’s latest processor and the same great build quality for the same price, while the Google Pixel 4a has a great Android experience and a great camera for $350. If you’re willing to spend more, but not $1,000, Samsung also offers the Samsung Galaxy S20 FE, which has many of the same features as the $699 full-featured Galaxy S20 up front. However, if you’re looking for something a little more powerful, the Samsung Galaxy A71 is also available, as is the Galaxy A51 5G – an updated version of the A51 with a bigger chipset and battery.

If you’re looking for Samsung’s latest mid-range device, you can also check out the Galaxy A52 5G. It’s upgraded to a Snapdragon 750G SoC while maintaining solid build quality and battery life. At $499, you’ll pay a little more, but the improvements are worth it. Samsung hasn’t made many changes to the cameras in the poor surrounds, but the move to 25W charging has solved our biggest gripe with the Galaxy A51.
