It’s not really noticeable, but it’s a strange choice from a company that has long argued that bigger is better when it comes to displays.
Eye Comfort Shield is a welcome addition that adjusts the screen temperature depending on the time of day and your own usage. If you’ve used Night Shift or something similar, you know the deal – the screen slowly shifts towards the yellow side of the white balance spectrum, reducing blue light so you don’t disrupt your circadian rhythms. It’s off by default, so you’ll need to go into settings to change it.
The company also introduced a Dynamic Refresh Rate feature, which rotates between 46 and 120 Hz, depending on the app you’re using. This is designed to extend battery life (120Hz like 5G can be a big expense). The effect is quite subtle. Can’t say I really noticed during use. I certainly appreciate the effort to find new ways of extracting the juice.
Samsung’s new era is just as remarkable for what it has left behind. The new S models mark the end of an era as the company finally abandons expandable storage (after the Z line). I mean, I get it. These devices have between 128 and 512 GB of storage space. For most users, the microSD reader was superfluous. I certainly shouldn’t have used it. According to the company, “Over time, the use of SD cards in smartphones has decreased significantly as we have expanded the storage options available to consumers.”

Portrait mode has been improved. This is still usually a problem with more complex shapes, but it’s a problem I’ve encountered with almost every solution. Samsung gets some points here because it offers tons of portrait editing after shooting, from different levels of bokeh to adjusting the focal point for other effects. As with most camera software, there’s plenty to play with.
Other key additions include Snap 8K, a nifty feature that lets you capture high-resolution stills from a single frame of 8K video. There’s also Vlogger Mode, which records from the front and back at the same time. Someone will surely find a social use for this, but it feels a bit gimmicky – one of those features that most users will forget right away. More options are usually a good thing, although camera software has gotten to the point where there are a lot of menus to navigate.
I understand that most users want a way to quickly take photos and record videos. The final S21 inputs are excellent for this. The hardware is strong enough to give you great shots with little effort. If you’re someone who really enjoys digging into the features and getting the best images on the device without exporting to a third-party app, the Ultra is the choice for you. In addition to being a type of access to the kitchen sink, the device is of top quality in all options.

The addition of S Pen functionality is probably the most impressive – and strangest – thing the Ultra does. At first glance, this appears to be the latest – and most significant – in a series of moves that effectively blur the lines between the company’s two flagship models.
