Samsung has been pushing LCD-backlit LCD TVs with quantum dots for years while ignoring light-emitting diode (OLED) technology. But now, the company has combined the two to create the amazing S95B TV line. This new entry offers the highest brightness we’ve seen from an OLED model, with a full color performance. However, the use of quantum dots in OLED panels makes it more complicated to estimate what the perfect black level should be. At $2,999.99 for the 65-inch model we tested, it’s more expensive than the Editors’ Choice-winning LG C2 Evo OLED TV ($2,499.99 for the 65-inch model), which offers nearly as good color when it delivers a great blackness. levels we expect from OLED.
Like OLED TVs and Samsung flagship models, the S95B is incredibly beautiful. A thin black border (just four inches wide) covers the active screen and a small gray metal band runs along it. Only the bezel, a narrow strip of slightly darker metal, defines the bottom edge, while a small protrusion in the center and near the bottom right corner each houses the remote microphone hole and the TV’s infrared sensor. The S95B sits on a 14-inch wide rectangular metal base, though you can mount it on a wall.

The bar is very thin in many places (about four inches in depth); the worst part is the gray plastic cover on the back that houses all the electronics and physical connections. Samsung’s Tizen based smart TV platform is still a major hurdle in providing a great user experience. The main problem is the menu structure. For example, it is difficult to access different settings once you go from the simple settings that appear when you press the menu button. Even switching between inputs is slow and clunky. It’s a poor experience compared to other smart TV platforms.
That said, it’s full of features, opens up apps for many media services, and supports Apple AirPlay 2 (but not Chromecast). The remote control of the S95B makes hands-free voice control through Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant, or Samsung’s Bixby possible.
The Samsung S95B is a 4K OLED TV with a 120Hz refresh rate. It supports high dynamic range (HDR) content in HDR10, HDR10+, and hybrid log gamma (HLG). Samsung continues to avoid Dolby Vision compatibility, although it does support Dolby Atmos for audio. The S95B also has an ATSC 3.0 tuner for high definition and 4K TV broadcasts.

Basically, OLED TVs should have “infinite” contrast because the technology allows each pixel to turn on and off and be brighter or dimmer, thus bring up a full black level. . However, that is not the case with the S95B. Because it uses quantum dots to improve color, the black level of the panel does not appear to be completely black in most cases. Although parts of the screen don’t actually light up remotely, the quantum dot layer seems to react to even the slightest bit of ambient light, just like from other parts of the screen itself. it or even a reflection from the glass part of the panel. Dark areas on the screen are still dark, but not to the extent we’ve come to expect from an OLED panel. However, we cannot measure the value of the black level here because it is completely dark without the presence of light.
The charts above show the S95B’s color levels out of the box in movie mode, with SDR scores compared to Rec.709 broadcast standards and HDR scores compared to DCI-P3 digital cinema standards. In both cases, they are as perfect as we’ve ever seen. All SDR colors are spot, as are all HDR colors. Cyan, magenta and yellow are less, but still true. The color performance is similar to that of the LG C2, with the upper reaches a little higher for a better saturation level and the second color does not touch the main points.
It’s good at S95B. Colors, such as the green of the trees and the blue of the water, appear in nature, are different, and are attractive. Fine details such as fur and leather are easily seen in light and shadow, while shadows appear dark, shiny. The picture is brighter for OLED panels (which have the highest brightness) compared to high-end LED TVs.

Instead, I measured lag using the Leo Bodnar 1080p Video Signal Input Lag Tester(Opens in a new window) . I recorded 9.4 milliseconds in its game play, just under the 10ms threshold we use to declare TV one of the best for gaming.
