Televisions have come a long way in recent years and 4K resolution is no longer reserved for the most advanced and expensive models on the market. In fact, almost all modern TVs larger than 32 inches on store shelves will now have a 4K picture, and there are plenty of budget options to choose from. So how do you choose the best 4K TV on the market? Well, a lot of it has to do with the features that are most important to you. One of our favorite affordable models is the TCL 4-Series, which starts at less than $300 for the 43-inch model.
4K resolution simply means that the TV has a certain number of pixels, 3840 by 2160 pixels to be exact, and the ability to display 4K TV shows, movies and games from streaming services, devices and game consoles like the Xbox Series X and PS5. Image quality is about much more than resolution, so you can’t ignore things like contrast, dynamic range, HDR performance, and peak brightness. The best TVs in our reviews excel in these areas. Additionally, if you are looking for a gaming TV, you should also consider factors such as input lag.
The list below features the best 4K TVs (let’s face it, the best TVs, period) that I tested in the test lab, where I compared them side-by-side to determine which are the best buys. Here are my latest recommendations, and for last year’s TVs, I’ve included an “Outlook” section with information on new models.
No TV I’ve ever tried offers this much picture quality for so little money. The TCL 6-Series Dolby Vision HDR TV has a great picture thanks to its mini-LED technology and well-implemented full-matrix local dimming, which helps it run circles around almost any other TV at this price point. It’s also a solid choice for gamers with THX mode that combines low input lag and high contrast. As if that weren’t enough, the Roku TV OS is our favorite.

This TV was first released in 2020, but is still a current model and remains my top pick. TCL also sells an 8K version of the 6 series, but I don’t think it’s worth the extra money, as well as a version from Google that I haven’t yet reviewed (although according to TCL, it has the same image quality as this one). Roku version).
Outlook: The replacement for this TV is the TCL R655 series. We haven’t tested it yet, but according to TCL, it should be brighter than this model with more local dimming zones, as well as offering 144Hz input for gaming and an improved base design. Both series are priced the same, except for the 75-inch size, which is more expensive on the newer model.
The C2 represents the pinnacle of image quality at a price that’s certainly high, but not too crazy. It outperforms every non-OLED TV on this list, including the Samsung QN90B below, with perfect black levels, unparalleled contrast and excellent off-angle viewing. It also has great gaming capabilities, making it the perfect companion for Xbox Series X or S, PlayStation 5, or both. The C2 also comes in a variety of sizes, although larger models cost more.
Improvements over last year’s C1 include carbon-fiber construction for a 47 percent weight reduction — the 65-inch version we reviewed weighs just 37 pounds on base, compared to 72 pounds for the 65-inch C1 — as well as some additional game mode settings and a new “always ready” feature.

Roku is our go-to platform for live TV streaming services like Netflix, Hulu and Amazon Prime Video, and it’s even better when it’s connected to your TV. This TCL 4 series can’t beat the models above in terms of picture quality – the 4K resolution and HDR performance don’t help the picture much – but it’s fine for most people, especially at this price.
We haven’t tested the latest version of this TV, the TCL S455 series, but it has similar specs and we expect it to perform almost identically to the previous model we tested.
Note that TCL also makes versions of the Series 4 for Google TV and Android TV. We haven’t tested them, but we expect the picture quality to be similar to the Roku version.
The Vizio MQX is one of the cheapest TVs with full-scale local dimming, allowing you to play TV shows, movies and games with enough contrast and brightness to display HDR. The MQX has fewer brightness zones than more expensive TVs like the TCL 6-Series, but offers 16 zones on the 50-inch, 30 on the 65-inch, and 42 on the 75-inch, which is more than enough for a great overall look. image quality with highlights, deep black levels, sharp contrast and accurate color.

Unlike last year’s M7, the MQX has a true 120Hz refresh rate, making it compatible with 4K/120Hz signals from game consoles like the Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5, and it performed well in our tests. Vizio supports both major HDR formats, HDR10 and Dolby Vision, on the M Series. If you can’t spare the money for the TCL 6 Series but want a better picture than the 4 Series, the Vizio MQX is a great happy medium.
Looking for a TV with impressive picture quality but don’t want OLED? Samsung QN90B is the best choice. This TV uses QLED TV technology, supplemented with mini-LEDs for a brighter picture than any OLED TV. OLED’s impressive contrast still prevails in side-by-side tests, but the QN90B’s QLED display is closer than ever.
In the summer of 2022, the older version of this TV, the QN90A, will remain on sale for hundreds less. It’s also great, but a bit dimmer than the QN90B. It also lacks some of the features of the 2022 model, including the new Game Center with cloud gaming.
Samsung is the brand that sells more TVs than any other and one of the most popular is the Q60 series. Its sleek QLED screen design stands out compared to the other TVs on this list, even though the ultra-slim OLED models are sleeker and offer better features, picture quality, and a larger size than the TCL 4 Series and Sony X80K . The TVs listed in this article are higher value, but if you want a Samsung TV and can’t afford the QN90A, this is a great option.
The Best 65 Inch Tvs For 2022
Note that the 2021 version of the Q60A is still on sale and may be cheaper than the Q60B in some sizes. The newer version was brighter in our tests, but if you want the best deal, stick with the Q60A if it’s still available.

The Vizio V-Series is our favorite affordable alternative to the TCL 4-Series Roku TV. We liked Roku’s smart TV system better (sound familiar?), but the V series has some advantages, including a better voice remote and more advanced picture settings. Image quality was basically the same on both, so unless you have a preference, it makes sense to buy the cheaper one.
Outlook: The 2022 version of the V series has very similar specs and pricing to the 2021 series. We haven’t reviewed it yet, but we expect both to perform roughly the same.

With excellent picture quality, locked full local dimming and plenty of brightness to make HDR content shine, the X90J is Sony’s answer to the improved TCL 6-Series and Vizio models. This LED TV’s sleek looks and Google TV operating system earn extra points, as do next-gen console support – including variable refresh rate (VRR), enabled by the March 2022 software update – and a built-in NextGen TV tuner . This Sony TV is perfect for PS5 gaming and works with Alexa and Google Assistant. If you want an “S” brand, this is one of the best prices we’ve tested.
2022 forecast: X90J succeeds X90K. I haven’t reviewed the new model yet, but its image quality specs are largely similar to the 2021 version, so I don’t expect any significant differences in image quality. Unlike the 2021 version, the new model comes with VRR enabled out of the box.
