Note: I don’t have the ability to take 4K blu-ray screenshots. Therefore, there will be no screenshots in this review. I would include a screenshot of the blu-ray, but Arrow doesn’t seem to want to include the blu-ray with most of their 4K blu-rays, so I can’t. There’s a packing shot at the end as usual.
Devoted Elvis comic book store clerk Clarence Worley (Christian Slater) minded his own business with triple billing Sonny Chiba when Alabama Whitman (Patricia Arquette) walked into his life – and ever since, the two have been inseparable. Within 24 hours, they are married and on the run after Clarence is forced to kill a psychopathic pimp that has infested Alabama. Driving a Cadillac cross-country from Detroit to Hollywood, this new couple plans to sell a suitcase full of stolen drugs to give themselves a new life… will they escape and fulfill their dream of a happy life? What are people saying about TRUE ROMANCE that hasn’t been said before? This is one of Tony Scott’s best films and one of Quentin Tarantino’s best scripts. Everything is true about this film. The writing is impeccable with some of the best dialogue scenes ever seen in an action movie. Tony Scott gave the film its usual character and emotion, but he did something none of his contemporaries ever did: he left the dialogue scenes out. Many action directors will cut dialogue to suit a cinematic style, but not Scott. He lets the characters speak and he adapts his style to them. This film also has one of the best actors out there. Christian Slater and Patricia Arquette are very good here. They are very reliable and likeable. I can’t imagine anyone else in this role. There is no role in this film that is not played perfectly. This is a film that most people find after walking into their local video store in the past. I can tell you how I found it. TRUE ROMANCE is an amazing film that is still being discovered today.
Presented in a 2.39:1 film-native aspect ratio, and new 4K scans of film-native negatives and 35mm, this is one fine transfer. Both domestic blu-rays of the film looked like crap, so Arrow made cuts for them. Luckily, Arrow always comes around. Detail is really high here, especially in close-ups. The scene “Sicily” is a notable example of this. You can see that Christopher Walken’s character is wearing a pinstripe suit, something I had never noticed before. Artificial sharpening goes away like a loud sound. Grains are also here. Thin, but present and well updated. HDR, (HDR10 and Dolby Vision) gives us really beautiful colors. This is one of the best money transfers of 2021.
Mcbastard’s Mausoleum: The Deeper You Dig (2019) (arrow Video Blu Ray Review )
There are two soundtracks for our selection: the 5.1 soundtrack and the original 2.0 film mix. The 5.1 song is really loud. In fact, it was louder than I expected. This is not a bad thing. Only one unexpected. The dialogues are really good and the people around are exercising during the action scenes.
The image and sound are the same as the UK release, which is to be expected. Picture quality on blu-ray, which I didn’t review because Arrow Video doesn’t include blu-ray with most of their 4K blu-ray releases is excellent. Everything I’ve said about 4K picture and sound quality applies to blu-ray releases with the usual limitations. Of course, there’s no HDR on blu-ray so colors won’t be as realistic or bold as in the 4K release, and the level of detail isn’t as high, but that doesn’t mean it’s blue. -Ray lower. Blu-ray looks great and belongs in every fan’s collection.
Arrow Video has ported all the legacy features from various DVDs and Blu-rays over the years and added a number of valuable custom features. There are four comments for the main characters. All four are worth listening to for very different reasons. The Tony Scott track is a more technical track. Tarantino’s song is an “outsider looking in” type of song, with Tarantino talking about the film from the writer’s POV and audience POV. Slater/Arquette’s song is an actor’s song where they talk about working with different actors and the people behind them. Track Tim Lucas is a song that follows the POV of the audience.
Then we have 6 comment tabs selected above the main four commentary tracks. These songs range from four minutes to thirty four minutes and cover the actor’s screen time. Four of the songs are legacy while there are two new songs featuring Bronson Pincot and Saul Rubinek. I enjoy all these songs and it doesn’t take much time.
The Cat O’ Nine Tails (arrow Video) Blu Ray Review + 4k Blu Ray Review Update
There are five new interviews here. The first is with Susan Becker, a costume designer who remembers the different ways Tony Scott took his material and wishes for each character. Next up is Michael Tronick who worked with Scott on many films as his editor. He spoke about Scott’s shooting style and how he always had sufficient coverage for every scene. Scott loves to shoot, even if it is insertion. Mark Mancina and John Van Tongeren were up next and they talked about their time on the film and what it was like working with Hans Zimmer. Larry Taylor takes us through Scott’s career in the following interview. Scott was always the director we wanted to know more about and this interview definitely brings us to the late director. Finally, for the new interview, we have Dan Price who is a fan of the film. He talked about how he got the purple Cadillac that Christian Slater drives in the movie.
Eleven deleted and extended scenes will meet us next. There are some good scenes here but they are cut properly. The alternative ending is interesting but might kill the overall mood of the film and leave the audience indifferent. The electronic media series includes four features on the making of the film and several interviews with the actors. Last but not least is the trailer and photo gallery.
The area where UK and US discs differ is in the special features department. We know there will be some changes as James Flower of Arrow Video said on his Twitter. Next up is the “Cadillac Man” interview featuring the man who owns the car Clarence drives in the film. I don’t know why this particular feature is missing as it seems odd it’s missing The new interview is shorter as well as the selected scene commentary. Most are writable to logos and credits. It doesn’t matter when the time difference runs by a few seconds. However, it becomes a problem when the time difference runs in minutes. The interview with Michael Tronick is shorter than a minute like the interview with Larry Taylor. Everything else is the same.

TRUE ROMANCE comes to us from the good people at Arrow Video. This is one of their limited editions, which means it has great features and some pretty packaging. The outer box is the usual chipboard type that Arrow has used for years. Very good and very reliable. The art used for this release is decent. It’s not the best piece of art they’ve ever used, but
