Update Agisoft Review – Without much fanfare, Agisoft released the latest iteration of its popular photography tools last week, ushering in the next era of the company’s software. Since 2010, this software has been known as PhotoScan, but two weeks ago the transition to “Metashape” took place.

He had never compared it to a camera, so it was fitting that when we first picked one up, the poor thing had an identity crisis. But all for a good cause. PhotoScan’s processing was entirely CPU-based, while Metashape added GPU usage as well as AI.

If you are not familiar with photography, the process goes like this: the user imports a series of photos of a static object into the appropriate software, sets some parameters and waits for a functional 3D model to be created. Once complete, the model can be exported for use in a design software such as Autodesk’s 3ds Max. How is PhotoScan’s Metashape used in industry? Not only is Epic Games using it, but Cyberpunk 2077 is being developed by CD Projekt RED.

Fortunately for experienced PhotoScan users, there will be no new learning curve when you move to Metashape. The software is basically the same and works the same way. However, there are many improvements under the hood, such as improved performance due to generating masks from depth maps.

In the example above, the PhotoScan solution took 19 hours and used 90 GB of memory to complete its work. Meanwhile, Metashape took only 9 hours and used only 57GB of memory to reach the same point. However, that in itself does not tell the whole story, because when you look closely, Metashape’s solution is more detailed than PhotoScan’s. You can see this a lot with street signs, which are only offered in PhotoScan but fully featured in Metashape.

The professional version of Metashape also adds artificial intelligence to the mix, providing a quick way to manipulate spatial data (and other options). This is not only due to machine learning, but also by Agisoft users who have correctly integrated the photo elements into their projects. The more people give their information, the better the algorithm gets.

In particular, Metashape adds cloud processing capabilities, allowing users to purchase some of Agisoft’s (potentially) server processing capabilities to get complex projects done faster. This joins the ability to use a local network, another Pro-only feature.

The move to Metashape has not changed the price of Agisoft licenses. The professional version still retails for $3,499, while the standard version is priced at $179. Current PhotoScan licensees can upgrade for free using a single key.

NVIDIA has revealed their new GeForce RTX 30 graphics cards in line for a Spring 2020 release, and they’ve said there are significant improvements in performance and performance with this “Ampere” architecture. While almost all games focus on media during launch, professional software like Agisoft Metashape should be looked at and developed. While the product doesn’t always match real-world performance, it’s a strong indication that NVIDIA has nearly doubled the amount of CUDA compared to similarly priced GeForce RTX 20 cards. At the top of the new line, NVIDIA seems to have combined the role of the previous generation RTX 2080 Ti and the Titan RTX in the RTX 3090. In general, the spread in small Metashape images is not large, with no more than 10% difference between all the cards we tested, but if you work with large projects (hundreds or thousands of images) then the difference between GPUs becomes more. In the extended benchmarks tested, the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080 performed very well, with similar performance to the more expensive Titan RTX! The RTX 3090 was a hair faster than that, but only saved 1-2% in overall processing time. Most likely the RTX 3070 is a bit slower, but still faster than the 20 series cards.

However, just looking at the entire project timeline tells part of the story. If we dig into the details, it turns out that only some steps in Metashape use the GPU – so they benefit from faster video cards. In particular, image integration, depth mapping, and structured classes are where the performance gains from one map to another come from. In this breakdown, we can see that the new cards in the RTX 30 series get a lot of space in graphics integration, where it looks better. In Deep Maps and Builds, the classic Titan RTX and RTX 2080 Ti maintain strong performance and a case can be made for Deep Maps.

The Titan RTX is still pretty fast… but is it worth the extra $1000? I do not think.

There are also special functions on the School Card – Building a table. This is how the RTX 3070 proved to be faster than the other, 30 percent more expensive cards. This test was run twice to determine the results, but it’s worth mentioning that a new driver update has been released for the 3070 and is required for this card to work. The rest of the results were collected in the previous weeks so they used the original driver… so maybe the driver changes are responsible. I intend to test the RTX 3080 and 3090 on the new drivers and if it changes their performance I will update this article.
