Adobe Lightroom Classic users have been clamoring for a serious performance update for years – even Adobe admitted that Lightroom’s performance was poor and that improving it was a priority. Well, it looks like the “top priority” is going to pay off very soon.

Late last week, Adobe announced that a major update to Lightroom Classic functionality is in the works. The update, coming soon, should improve performance for anyone using a multi-core device with at least 12GB of RAM. Or in Adobe’s words:

The company’s own measurements largely confirm this claim. Adobe shared these results with Adobe and improved export times between the current version 7.1 and the upcoming version 7.2.

Our own tests also showed a significant increase in speed when exporting files and a significant increase in performance when importing. Adobe gave us early access to the new version and we tested it twice alongside the current version of Lightroom Classic CC. We ran our initial export test on a 2016 13-inch MacBook Pro with 16GB of RAM and a 3.3GHz dual-core i7 processor running macOS 10.12.6 and found average speed but still a significant improvement of around 11%.

It’s not quite in the same class as the 8+ core machines Adobe has around, but it’s certainly closer to an average setup for a hobbyist or semi-pro photographer. Despite being an older machine, we knew that more cores would give us a better chance of seeing serious performance, Adobe says.
Importing 130 raw files from a Fujifilm X-T2 (totaling 7.6GB) and producing “standard” previews, we saw a huge performance boost with LR Classic CC 7.2 on our 2015 quad-core MacBook Pro. Almost 80%, in fact.

Exporting the same 130 raw files as JPEG (quality level 80, Adobe RGB), after extensive editing (including exposure, shadow/highlight adjustments, lens corrections and brightness noise reduction), I noticed a slight performance improvement in LR Classic CC 7.2 compared to 7.1. About 10% on average – very similar to the 11% performance increase we saw in our previous test on our 2013 dual-core Mac.
Adobe has been adamant that this update is just the beginning. The company is “pleased with these performance improvements” and believes Lightroom Classic users will be, too, but Adobe also told us it’s “far from done.” The company promises that optimizations and performance improvements will continue in future versions of Lightroom Classic CC.
For now, we’re just happy to see the first fruits of that “top priority” promise Adobe made last year.

In August 2018, Adobe released an update for Adobe Lightroom CC (version 1.5), Adobe Lightroom Classic CC (version 7.5), and Adobe Camera Raw (version 10.5). Overall, the update brings bug fixes, new features and support for more cameras and lenses.
First on the list is Adobe Lightroom CC (version 1.5). The highlight of the update is the ability to save albums locally. Now you can download pictures from the album to your computer and edit them offline if you want to stay offline for a while. The next time you connect, the images will sync with files stored in Creative Cloud.
Adobe Lightroom CC (version 1.5) also provides the ability to see which albums each image belongs to. Windows users also now support Apple’s HEIC image file format.
In Lightroom Classic CC (version 7.5), Adobe added the ability to load presets and profiles in bulk, instead of one by one. “You can import XMP presets and profiles, DCP profiles, and LCP profiles as part of a zip file,” Adobe says in its press release. “However, .lrtemplate presets cannot be imported as part of a zip file.”

Adobe also added two new book types (Blurb Magazine and Blurb Trade Book) and a new paper type (Standard Layflat) in the Lightroom Classic CC book module. Lightroom Classic CC (v7.5) for Windows also supports Apple’s HEIC image file format.

The update to Adobe Camera Raw (version 10.5) is relatively minor, supporting only three new cameras and eight new lenses.
