It’s been a few months since the Galaxy A51 received a firmware update, and it’s time for a change. Samsung just started rolling out a new update for the Galaxy A51 and is now rolling out a new security patch for the 2019 mid-range phone.

While Samsung has released the October 2022 security patch for several devices, the Galaxy A51 is not among them. Instead, the mid-range phone will now receive the September 2022 security patch. And at the time of writing, availability in Russia is limited to the SM-A515F variant.

Samsung’s Three Year Old Galaxy A51 Is Getting A New Security Update

The update includes firmware version A515FXXS5FVI1 and from the structure of the firmware number you can tell that the update only includes a newer security patch and nothing else. There aren’t any new features to look forward to, but improved security doesn’t stand much of a chance, especially for an outdated 2019 mid-range phone.

The September update fixed more than two dozen vulnerabilities, including memory access errors in various functions and a bug that could allow an attacker to remotely initiate emergency calls.

Apple’s new $399 iPhone SE is our highest-rated non-flagship model, and we expect about a dozen similarly priced offerings on US carriers this year. First up is the $399.99 Samsung Galaxy A51. It offers great value for its price in the form of a beautiful design, long battery life, good camera quality and a great display. But it’s no match for the iPhone SE in the power department.

Simply put, the Galaxy A51 looks good. It measures 6.24 x 2.90 x 0.31 inches (HWD) and weighs 6.06 ounces. It is light and narrow enough to hold in one hand without any problems. In the US, it is available in black with an attractive prismatic finish. Other parts of the world also have blue and white options.

The front of the phone is dominated by a 6.5-inch bezel-less AMOLED display with a 20:9 aspect ratio and a small hole for the front-facing camera. The resolution is 2400×1080 for a higher pixel density (405 pixels per inch) than the iPhone SE (326 pixels per inch). By default, the colors are bright and warm, but you can adjust them to your liking in the settings menu. The display itself is bright and clear, and you’ll have no problem viewing it in direct sunlight.

On the back of the phone, in the upper left corner, you’ll find a wide rectangular camera. Unlike flagship models made of glass or metal, the back panel of the A51 is made of durable plastic with a vitreous coating that you might not even know is plastic unless you look closely. This means that a few minutes after the phone is taken out of the box, fingerprints remain on it.

The top edge of the A51 is bare, while the bottom houses the headphone jack, USB-C port, and speaker. On the left you’ll find the hybrid SIM/microSD slot, and on the right are the power and volume buttons. If you have small hands, the volume rocker can be confusing.

While the new iPhone SE has an IP67 rating, the A51 has no such official durability guarantee. While the plastic back panel can withstand occasional drops without much damage, the display is made of Gorilla Glass 3, an older, more fragile tempered glass that’s good at resisting scratches but not so much against hard drops. It is best to put the phone in a good box.

The network speed is stable. We tested the phone on Verizon and averaged 76.9 Mbps down and 14.6 Mbps up.

Call quality is very good. The maximum volume of the headset reaches 84 dB, which is enough to be heard on a busy street. Our test calls were clear and the noise cancellation worked well, even when using the phone near high-rise buildings.

Other sound quality is acceptable. The maximum volume is 88 dB, which is enough to fill a room. The timbre is thin at high volume, with a noticeable cut. Low frequencies are missing and high frequencies are unclear. In short, it’s great for conference calling or watching TikTok videos, but if your plans include Netflix, you’ll want to use the 3.5mm headphone jack.

The A51 supports dual-band Wi-Fi and has Bluetooth 5.0 for connecting wearable devices. NFC is also available for mobile payments and boarding passes.

The Galaxy A51 has a serious camera package. On the back of the phone, you’ll find four sensors: a 48-megapixel wide-angle lens with f/2.0 aperture, a 12-megapixel ultra-wide-angle lens with f/2.2 aperture, a 5-megapixel depth lens with f/2.2 aperture, and others 5-megapixel macro lens with an aperture of f/2.4.
