Samsung releases very long software updates for most of its Android smartphones. But at some point it has to end. Especially on older models that are not covered by the upgrade upgrade policy. This is exactly what happened to one of the most popular models. It’s getting its last major feature update.

With the Galaxy A series, Samsung created legendary smartphones like the Galaxy A50 or Galaxy A51 (test), which helped the company remain the largest smartphone manufacturer in the world. Just like the high-end models, the mid-range mobile phones receive software updates quickly and thus stay updated. But for the Galaxy A51, it is now reaching the point where the legendary smartphone is slowly fading away. A major software update to One UI 5.1 with many new features is rolling out now (Source: SamMobile).
Samsung Galaxy A51, A71 Announced (update: A51 Is Coming To India)
The Samsung Galaxy A51 will still receive irregular security updates after the update, but the smartphone will mostly remain at the One UI 5.1 level and won’t receive any new features or major tweaks. With Android 11, 12 and 13, Samsung has already provided the smartphone with three major Android version updates and countless security updates. Android 14 and One UI 6 are no longer available. Only new models like the Galaxy A53 (test) get four new versions of Android and five years of security updates.
Anyway. The Galaxy A51 is by no means obsolete, but simply moved aside. Samsung has proven several times in the past that even older smartphones that have actually been thrown out of the blue still receive software updates when security flaws appear. This is exactly what should also apply to the Galaxy A51. It just won’t happen as quickly as it used to.

Galaxy A51 Review: Samsung Galaxy A51 Review: A Capable Performer

How good can a $400 phone be? When the device in question is the Samsung Galaxy A51, the answer is simple: very well. As the first true representative of the Galaxy A family in the US, the A51 is a convincing attempt to prove that Samsung can make a good mid-range phone worth buying. In fact, Samsung’s budget phone (£329 in the UK and AU$599 in Australia) even beats the iPhone SE (which starts at $399, £419 and AU$749) in several specific and important ways. When it comes to screen size and brightness, phone features, camera quality and performance, the Galaxy A51 delivers on what counts. One exception.

The speed of the Samsung Exynos 9611 processor is the Galaxy A51’s Achilles heel. Performance slows down during everyday activities, such as waiting for a website to load or updating apps. Benchmarking tests support real-world observations.
Samsung Galaxy A51 Review: Old Wine In A Shiny New Bottle
The Galaxy A51 certainly falls short of flagship phones like the Galaxy S20, but even when it goes up against the A51’s main competitor. This is because Apple has given the iPhone SE the same A13 Bionic chipset as the most expensive iPhone 11, so Apple’s budget device has almost moved on. The iPhone SE also beats the A51 when it comes to water resistance and wireless charging, both features that Samsung’s budget phone lacks. But the Galaxy A51 has its charms. It doubles the iPhone SE’s built-in storage at the SE’s starting price, giving you 128GB, compared to the SE’s 64GB for its cheapest model—and it also supports external storage. Samsung’s screen is much larger with a slim bezel, giving the phone a modern look and less wasted space. Battery life is also the same between the two phones. Both clock in around 16 hours in the video loop test in airplane mode, with more lab tests on the way. In this test, the Galaxy A51 lasted 20 minutes longer than the SE.
The Galaxy A51 also holds its own on the camera front in ways that compare to Samsung phones and iPhones: Galaxy photos are more saturated than the iPhone’s more natural tones. The iPhone SE benefits from optical image stabilization, but the A51’s four cameras also give you more shooting options than the iPhone SE. The wide angle lens is the lens I’m most interested in, which is missing from the SE. But in all other aspects, the picture quality is pretty close, one over the other in one scenario or another. Take the iPhone SE out of the equation and the A51 is comparable to the Galaxy S20 Plus at a third of the price. Considering the A51 is significantly cheaper than any phone in the Galaxy S20 family, it’s an impressive overall package.

It’s hard to tell the two big phones apart at first glance, but the A51’s front-facing camera is brighter and the A51 uses an optical in-display fingerprint reader. By the way, the fingerprint reader was more accurate for me than the Galaxy S20’s ultrasonic sensor.
The A51 is also slightly lighter as it has a plastic back rather than glass. When I put the two side by side and watched the same Netflix show in the same frame, the A51’s screen was almost as bright, detailed and colorful as the Galaxy S20 Plus. Reading outside in the afternoon sun was also fairly even.
Photos and videos look much better on the Galaxy S20, mainly because the photo resolution is sharper on the more expensive model and because it has OIS, which makes for smoother and more stable photos and videos. You can use Samsung’s native software on the Galaxy A51’s camera, including night mode, and the phone has options like macro and HDR. By choosing the camera setting, you can take a 48 megapixel photo. When I compare the same enlarged photos taken with both phones on my laptop screen, it’s easy to see where the Galaxy S20 stands out. In other photos, photos of local flowers along my walk or the dinner I made look just as good.
I appreciate that the Galaxy A51 has macro photography where the Galaxy S20 is blurry when you get too close. In some cases, it was very easy to get focused macro with the A51. Selfies are much better on the Galaxy S20, but perfectly usable on the A51. Additionally, you can use portrait mode and beauty mode to soften the scene.
Samsung Releases Android 13 Update And One Ui 5.0 To The Samsung Galaxy A51 5g
Disappointingly, the Galaxy A51 lacks water resistance. Most modern phones have this, although it is typical of budget devices that are not waterproof or simply “splash-proof”. The A51’s all-day battery lost an average of 16 hours, 10 minutes in Airplane mode after three morning-to-night video loop tests. I’ll update this review with the results of our Wi-Fi Steam lab tests when they’re complete.
Thankfully, the A51 also includes a 15W fast charger in the box, but unlike the Galaxy S20 phones, you’ll need to supply your own headphones and any USB-C to USB-C cables you want. However, it does come with a USB-A to USB-C cable.
