The trend of introducing mid-cycle updates with minor hardware tweaks is rapidly gaining momentum as smartphone makers compete to offer end users the latest innovations. The Samsung Galaxy A50s is the latest example of this strategy, with Samsung updating its mid-range Galaxy A and Galaxy M phones to keep up with rivals like Realme, Xiaomi and Vivo breathing down its neck. The Galaxy A50s builds on the Galaxy A50, which was launched in February, and features more powerful camera hardware, an upgraded processor, attractive aesthetics, and support for Samsung Pay. We spent some time with the Galaxy A50s and here are our first impressions.

Samsung Galaxy A13 Review: Display, Battery Life, Charging Speed, Speaker

The Samsung Galaxy A50s immediately attracts attention thanks to its glossy back panel that resembles a prism. It has distinct areas that glow a different color when light hits them from different angles. The Prism Crush Violet variant is the one to pick for its gorgeous reflective profile and bright color scheme, but if you want a less ornate finish, Prism Crush Black and Prism Crush White will serve you well.

The prismatic design stands out, but the glass-like back panel is a smudge magnet and quickly gets fingerprinted, just like its predecessor. The build quality is solid and the slim profile provides a comfortable grip. The curved back panel flows seamlessly into the frame, giving the Galaxy A50s a more luxurious look.

Samsung’s new lineup features a 6.4-inch Super AMOLED Infinity-U display with Full HD+ (1080 x 2340 pixels) resolution that delivers vivid colors and impressive brightness output with good sunlight readability. However, the in-display fingerprint sensor was a bit slow compared to what we’ve seen on other phones in the same price category.

The Samsung Galaxy A50s is powered by a 10nm Exynos 9611 SoC which appears to be an upgraded version of the Exynos 9610 that powers the Galaxy A50. The phone has up to 6GB of RAM and 128GB of built-in storage, with One UI based on Android Pie taking care of the software. NFC-based Samsung Pay support also separates the Galaxy A50s from the Galaxy A50.

Samsung also updated the Galaxy A50’s camera hardware and equipped the phone with a 48-megapixel main camera, up from the 25-megapixel snapper on the Galaxy A50. There is also an 8-megapixel wide-angle camera and a 5-megapixel depth sensor. The selfie camera has also been upgraded to a 32-megapixel sensor.

The company has added a night mode to the Galaxy A50s, which is the first mid-range Galaxy A series phone, along with a Super Steady mode for video recording. We will be testing the camera comprehensively to find out if the new sensors and dedicated night mode make a tangible difference to the Galaxy A50. The Galaxy A50s comes with a 4,000mAh battery and its retail package comes with a 15W fast charger, which is definitely a plus.

With a starting price of Rs. 22,999, the Galaxy A50s goes head-to-head with some well-received phones like the Redmi K20 (review), Poco F1 (review) and Vivo V15 Pro (review) to name a few. The overall package is a bit disappointing for the asking price, but we reserve the final verdict for our review as we extensively test the cameras, daily performance and battery life. Stay tuned for Gadgets 360 as our Galaxy A50s review is coming soon.

By Sanket Vijayasarathy: In recent months, Samsung has released updated versions of phones launched in the first half of the year, such as the Galaxy M30s, Galaxy M10s, Galaxy A20s, Galaxy A50s and Galaxy A70s. These phones share the same DNA as their original counterparts but with updated internals and appear to be more useful in the second half of 2019. For example, the Galaxy M30s (review) offers a two-day battery life and triple 48MP cameras. Today we take a look at the Galaxy A50s.

You may remember the Galaxy A50 (review) from earlier this year. It was a sleek and attractive smartphone with features such as an AMOLED display, a built-in fingerprint reader and a solid battery, making it cost well under Rs 20,000. Samsung Galaxy A10, Galaxy A30 And Galaxy A50 Launched In India Starting At Rs 8,490

Holding the Galaxy A50s will instantly remind you of the Galaxy A50. It delivers the same dreamy, slim and lightweight body we loved on the original model. Galaxy A50s measures 7.7 mm in thickness and weighs only 166 grams, which makes it a smartphone that is extremely light and comfortable to hold. The slim shape combined with the curved back panel provides excellent hand feel.

The curved back panel is made of plastic, which becomes a bit more disappointing for a phone above Rs 20,000. Therefore, the plastic body makes the phone light and comfortable to hold, so it’s a positive trade-off if there is one.

The biggest visual change is in the panel itself, which has a checkered pattern on the back, with each box offering a different shade of the same color. Galaxy A50s is available in Prism Crush Black, Prism Crush White and Prism Crush Violet colors. The purple color definitely stands out from the rendering. I got the black option which actually looks gray and offers a prism-like gradation when viewed from different angles.

Galaxy A50s is a tall phone, but comfortable to use with one hand. Reaching the top of the display will require you to reposition the grip, but the buttons are a good length and have a very nice tactile feel. The volume keys and the power button are located on the right side of the slim bezel. On the left side is the SIM tray that can hold
