Update A12 Samsung Souq Review – Now, I know we mostly show the most expensive devices here, but this time, we got our hands on one of the cheapest if not the cheapest new option from Samsung, the Galaxy A12.
Design Tastes Like Blue When we say cheap, we really mean cheap. This phone starts at $180 and for the price, it’s well built.

It is an all-plastic build, but we think the blue color and textured back make it handy. And also, one or two cool things here. We get dual SIM support and a dedicated Micro SD card slot and a headphone jack.

To keep your expectations in check though, the back feels a bit hollow and moves when we push it.
Otherwise, for security, you get a fingerprint scanner on the side that does a great job. A misread or two is possible, but we found it quickly and reliably.
And last but not least, we have one speaker below that is a bit quiet, but also does not distort too much when listening at maximum volume.
Good enough display The display isn’t really bright enough for easy outdoor use, but it should do the job if you plan to check a quick message or two while walking the dog. At least it’s dim enough so you don’t accidentally blind yourself during the night.

The AMOLED panel is not so do not expect great colors but the IPS technology it is equipped with is at least immune to burn-in, it does not like it and still offers very good colors for the average person. Another thing we should note, you don’t get any crazy high refresh rate here and the resolution is 720×1600 pixels, but this is to be expected in this price range.
The CIE 1931 xy xy color gamut chart shows the range (zone) of colors a display can reproduce, with the sRGB color space (the highlighted triangle) as a reference. The chart also provides a visual indication of display color accuracy. The small squares across the border of the triangle are the reference points for different colors, and the small dots are the actual measurements. Ideally, each point should be placed on top of its respective square. The ‘x:CIE31’ and ‘y:CIE31’ values in the chart below the chart indicate the position of each measurement on the chart. ‘Y’ represents the measured luminance (in nits) of each color, and ‘Target Y’ the desired luminance level for that color. Finally, ‘ΔE 2000’ is the Delta E value of the measured color. Delta E values below 2 are ideal. These measurements are made using the CalMAN Portrait Displays calibration software.
The color accuracy table gives an idea of how the measured display colors are with the reference values. The first line holds the measured (actual) color, and the second line holds the reference (target) color. The closer the actual colors are to the target ones, the better. KameraIt works but camera-wise we are happy. Since there is plenty of sunlight, we managed to take some very nice shots with reasonable sharpness.
These pictures do not really surprise us, but they are so spot-on for your average use. We have no complaints here. And the HDR performance was really good. Like the shadows were well exposed even in sunny conditions, and the sky was rarely overexposed.
You will also find an ultra-wide secondary camera here and it is not really sharp at all, but it creates some cool photos of your vacation.
The zoom is not something we would recommend you do because there is no dedicated lens for that, but some shots come out well and the colors are nice on the road.

The subject comes out well cropped in most cases and the selfie camera is also good if enough light is provided.
One complaint from us though., night mode in the shots we can take in the evening.
For example, you can’t really see any faces here, so our colleague had to go to a place where there was more light.
And we also get a macro camera here, which we think is mostly a gimmick. It produces good colors and takes pictures from a great distance, but it is not very sharp and we would prefer the budget to go elsewhere.

Although the videos are not too shabby. You can film up to 1080p at 30fps. It’s not amazing or anything, but the quality is at least perfect for some family videos or something like that during a vacation. But one more thing we should mention, the microphone in this device had trouble recording voice when there is background noise, so keep this in mind if you plan to make a video in a crowded place or near a busy street And don’t expect any kind of video stabilization here, which could be a big problem if you plan to shoot while walking.
Well, let’s put it this way, it’s not racing, but it’s not frustratingly slow or jerky either.
The Galaxy A12 comes equipped with a budget Helio P35 SoC. It’s not really meant for gaming or anything like that, so it struggled when we did some Minecraft on it, but watching videos and surfing the web are some things it does with ease. We mostly browse Reddit and watch some YouTube and it manages to keep up, with a little stutter.
We also noticed that it doesn’t really heat up while playing Minecraft so this is great. No intention.

You will notice that the applications take a while to open, but when they do, they run fine for the most part. Such a weak processor also has the great advantage that you consume very little power.
Battery How big is too big? The battery capacity you get here is around 5000mAh. And that is simply amazing. You can expect more than 2 days of use if you don’t use the phone too much. But again, like any other device on the market, if you use it constantly, you will probably need to charge it in the same day. You get a fast charger in the box for free, but note that “fast” here is only 15 watts and it takes a few hours to fully charge this battery.
You get an interesting blue textured design, a camera good enough for those family vacations, good performance for everything except games, and a battery so big that the engineers probably had to give the phone more room in the back.
But we are not sure if this is the perfect device at this price. He made a sacrifice in his performance. For example, for about the same price, you can get the Oneplus Nord N100 and it comes with a more powerful processor and a good performance camera.
