The good thing is that the smartphone has all the right features to make it a solid Rs 15,000 smartphone. As mentioned before, the Samsung Galaxy M31 has a familiar design. It looks very similar to the Galaxy M30s as it has a plastic unibody panel on the back with a rear-mounted fingerprint sensor and a square-shaped camera module on the top left corner. While the plastic material helps keep the smartphone light (despite having a large battery), it doesn’t make it as attractive compared to all-glass phones like the Redmi Note 8 Pro (Review).
The front of the Samsung Galaxy M31 is also familiar, as you get a 6.4-inch Full HD + (2,340 x 1,080) Super AMOLED Infinity-U display, just like before. The display has a U-shaped notch with a selfie camera and a rather thick chin.
The Samsung Galaxy M31 is a thick phone and feels a bit heavy in the hand, so it gets tiring after a while. The smartphone is available in blue, black and red color options. Thanks to the glossy back panel, the Galaxy M31 is a fingerprint and smudge magnet, which is quite noticeable in the black color version we received for review. The main camera of the Galaxy M31 takes decent photos during the day. When scene optimization is on, the camera uses a lot of software processing to enhance colors, which may be a better option than more natural tones. So if you take flowers for example, the greens will look greener and the pinks can go red. Photos are warmer, which means you won’t be able to capture natural white tones. In general, images taken in daylight lacked contrast and dynamic range compared to the Redmi Note 8 Pro in this segment.
The main camera can focus quickly on a subject in daylight, but this gets a bit blurry when the sun goes down. By default, the main camera shoots at 16 megapixels and uses pixel binning to deliver brighter and sharper images. You can manually change the aspect ratio to 3:4 64 megapixel to take high resolution photos. However, 64MP photos look darker, lack HDR support, and should only be used in bright daylight if you want to shoot a wide landscape to zoom in later.

From the main camera onwards, the 8 megapixel wide-angle camera of the Samsung Galaxy M31 manages to take pleasant wide-angle photos in daylight. Colors look good and have a lot of detail as long as you’re not zooming in and looking at the pixels. Portrait mode using Live Focus can take some nice bokeh shots as long as the blur effect isn’t extreme. Skin tones look warm and soft, but there is good detail.
Finally, we have a 5 megapixel macro camera that can get up to 3 cm from the subject. Again, the macro camera is best used in daylight where you can take creative close-up shots. Macros can be seen clearly and in detail as long as the subject is stationary. However, colors look dull and washed out compared to the natural bokeh that can be captured with the main camera.
The Galaxy M31 is reasonably good at video recording. Both the front and rear cameras can record UHD videos. The main camera also supports Super Steady mode, which does a good job of keeping videos shake-free during handheld recording.
Samsung has also upgraded the front camera from 16MP to 32MP, which means sharper selfies on the Galaxy M31. Although this is true and the selfie camera captures good details in clothes and hair, it still flattens the face even with the beauty mode turned off. The front camera also supports Live Focus, which allows you to adjust the bokeh intensity in real time. The higher the bokeh effect, the more unnatural the subject separation looks.

Overall, the Samsung Galaxy M31 has a versatile camera setup that allows you to take photos from different angles. And while the 64-megapixel quad-camera system seems like a nice upgrade thanks to the extra macro lens, it doesn’t feel like the best quad-camera setup compared to competitors in this segment.
The Samsung Galaxy M31 is powered by a 2.3GHz octa-core Exynos 9611 chipset based on a 10nm process and equipped with a Mali G72 MP3 GPU. This is the same processor that also powered the Galaxy M30s. Samsung has bumped up the original from 4GB RAM to 6GB RAM, which should provide a smoother multitasking experience. The smartphone is available in 64 GB and 128 GB storage variants, which can be further expanded up to 512 GB with a microSD card.
Right out of the box, the Samsung Galaxy M31 felt as fast as you can expect from a new smartphone. Browsing One UI 2.0 was smooth and the applications opened quickly too. During our week-long usage, we didn’t notice any slowdowns or lags while using various daily apps like messaging, social media browsing and so on.
The Exynos 9611 is a decent mid-range processor that can handle everyday tasks with ease. It can also run graphically intensive games like PUBG with high graphics and frame rate by default. We played a 30-minute PUBG session on default settings, which ran smoothly. From high to extreme graphics settings, we noticed that the phone got hot during games. However, this didn’t affect the phone’s battery life, as a 30-minute session only drained the battery by about 5 percent, which is impressive.

Talking about the One UI 2.0 software which is based on Android 10, it is a simple and easy to use interface. In fact, the Galaxy M31 ships with One UI Core instead of One UI, which means some features like Bixby and Bixby Home are missing. You can’t download Samsung Pay from the Play Store either. The stripped-down One UI Core feels like a single interface, so if you don’t miss Bixby and Samsung Pay too much, you should be happy with what the software offers.
