The Fire TV platform has powered Amazon’s media streamers and many third-party TVs for years, but until now the company hasn’t built its own TVs. The Omni is one of the first Fire TVs and the flagship model in its new line. At $829.99 for the 65-inch model we tested, the Omni still leans more toward the budget-friendly end of the spectrum than a flagship, and its picture quality reflects that. But it’s packed with all the powerful Fire TV features, including hands-free Alexa voice control, making it an exciting smart TV option that won’t break the bank.
The Omni has a no-nonsense design with a bit of chrome around the edges. The display is framed by an almost thin black border, giving it an almost bezel-like appearance. Only the bottom edge has a bezel, a gun line with the Fire TV logo in the middle, and a small protrusion with near-field microphones below (a small switch at the bottom turns off the microphone). The TV rests on two wide-spaced, V-shaped metal legs or can be wall-mounted.

The power connector is on the left side of the rear panel, with all other connections on the right. It includes four HDMI ports (one eARC), a USB 2.0 port, an optical audio out, a 3.5mm headphone jack, another 3.5mm port for a built-in IR emitter, an Ethernet port and a jack cable/antenna.

The remote control is the same as the one included with Fire TV media streams. It’s a flat, slightly rounded black rectangle with a large, round navigation pad near the top. The power and Alexa buttons, as well as the punch-hole microphone, are located above the pad. Menu and playback controls are located below the pad, with channel and volume controls below them. Four dedicated service buttons for Amazon Prime Video, Disney+, Hulu, and Netflix are near the bottom. The remote control connects wirelessly to the TV so you don’t need eye contact, but it also has an infrared transmitter. Another infrared transmitter on a long cable can be installed in the cabinet to control the other home cinema devices with the TV and remote control.
As its name suggests, the Omni runs on Amazon’s Fire TV platform, like the Toshiba C350 and Amazon’s Fire TV media streams. It offers a feature-rich Amazon-centric interface with a wide variety of apps and services. Amazon Prime Video is integrated directly into the platform, but all major non-Amazon services are available, including Apple TV, Disney +, HBO Max, Hulu, Netflix, Twitch and – YouTube. A live guide is built into the interface, showing live channels from TV services, Amazon channels and Pluto TV.
Fire TV still lags behind Google TV and Roku TV in viewing devices. You can mirror your computer screen via WiDi/Miracast, but there’s no Apple Airplay or Google Cast for simple and convenient smartphone or computer mirroring.

On the other hand, the Omni offers Amazon’s Alexa voice assistant. Alexa comes standard on all Fire TV streamers and media TVs, accessible by long-pressing the Alexa button on the remote and speaking to it. However, the Omni adds remote microphones so you can just talk into the TV like you would a smart speaker like the Amazon Echo or the Fire TV Cube (the only Fire TV device with hands-free Alexa). Just say “Alexa,” followed by a command, and Alexa will respond and display any important information on the TV.
Alexa is a powerful voice assistant and can search for content, control your TV and all smart home devices, answer common questions, and display your calendar and reminders. If you don’t want Alexa to always be listening, you can toggle the switch under the TV to turn off the microphone, and a small red LED will light up to indicate that the microphone is off.
The microphone also enables voice calls with Alexa Communications. You can make calls through the TV, communicate with other Alexa users with Drop In, or participate in one-way video calls with Amazon Chime, Skype, or Zoom. You can even make two-way video calls with these services by connecting a compatible Logitech webcam (C310, C920x or C922x Pro).
The Amazon Fire TV Omni is a 4K TV with a 60Hz refresh rate. It supports high dynamic range (HDR) content in HDR10 and hybrid log gamma (HLG), while the 65- and 75-inch versions also support Dolby Vision, but not smaller screen sizes.

We test TVs using a Klein K-80 colorimeter (Opens in a new window), a Murideo SIX-G generator (Opens in a new window) and Portrait Displays’ Calman software (Opens in a new window) using a method based on Measuring Techniques Imaging Science Foundation (Opens in a new window).
Omni is better for color rendering, but it doesn’t go far enough. The graphs above show the color measurements for an SDR signal compared to Rec.709 broadcast standards and an HDR signal compared to DCI-P3 digital cinema standards, in Movie mode. The Omni Rec.709 pulls it off, but that’s a lot less appealing than it was a few years ago. Most TVs can cover standard broadcast colors accurately with little effort. The HDR signal showed saturated green and red, well below DCI-P3. Blues were accurate, however, and while other colors were a bit saturated, they weren’t stark or tinted in any way.
. While all colors look balanced and natural, green plants and feathers look a bit oversaturated, lacking the vibrancy that the Vizio MQ6-J and more expensive TVs can. Fine details like fur and bark are clearly visible in all lighting conditions, but the hue doesn’t look particularly dark.
Looks great on the Omni, Deadpool’s red suit looks well balanced against the open sky, though it’s also not as visible as on other TVs we’ve tested. Shadow detail in a fiery lab battle can look muddy or washed out depending on how bright the overall frame is.

Mark the boundaries of the Omni in light and dark layers. The cuts and contours of black suits are often lost in the dark, and while they can be seen in the general light of the frame, they look a little washed out. Still, skin tones look natural and balanced, and considering the TV’s high brightness, whites still manage to pop.
In terms of features, the Omni is not well equipped for gamers. The 60 Hz monitor only has automatic low latency (ALLM) mode, no variable refresh rate (VRR) support. Thankfully, it’s very responsive in game mode. using the HDMI matrix HDFury Diva (Opens in a new window), we measured an input lag of just 2.6 milliseconds, making it among the best gaming TVs (at least in terms of latency, VRR will go a long way here). Just remember to switch to this mode if you want to play anything because in Movie mode the latency goes up to 111.4ms.
Amazon’s first Fire TV offers a lot of features, but the company clearly isn’t trying to push any boundaries when it comes to picture quality. That said, the Fire TV platform is very functional, hands-free Alexa voice control works great, and $830 for a 65-inch screen makes the Fire TV Omni an attractive option for the price.
