This review is based on tests performed on the 55R646, the 55-inch model in the series. Other than the difference in screen size, the $1,299.99 65-inch 65R646 is identical in specs, and we expect similar performance.
TCL has consistently impressed us with its 6 Series TVs, which offer strong performance at affordable prices. All of these TVs ran exclusively on the Roku TV platform, which is an affordable and simple interface, but not the most feature-packed. Now TCL offers an alternative in the form of its Google TV 4K 6-Series. They’re priced around the same as the Roku TV 4K 6-Series models (the 55-inch 55R646 we tested retails for $949.99) and offer strong app and service support, Google Cast screen mirroring, and Google Assistant hands -free (although they will forgo the Apple AirPlay support included in the Roku TV). And they appear to feature some engineering improvements over the Roku models, with stronger contrast and lower input lag. The Hisense U8G series is brighter, but otherwise TCL’s Google TV 6 series offers the same great features at nearly the same price, earning our Editors’ Choice award alongside the Hisense model.

Before we continue, it’s worth noting that TCL has temporarily pulled its Google TV models from retail channels in response to reports of software instability. We haven’t had this problem in testing, and now that TCL has released a software update for the affected models, they’re available at retail again.
Physically, the Google-based 55R646 is almost identical to the Roku-based 55R635. The screen is framed by the same thin band of polished metal that runs along the sides and top, with the same band along the bottom edge holding the chrome TCL logo in the middle. It also sits on very similar V-shaped metal legs, although they are slightly lower and have protruding rubber feet. The biggest indication that this is the Google TV model and not the Roku model is the rectangular, dark gray, cloth-covered bump that sits on the bottom of the TV. It’s the remote microphone array that provides hands-free access to Google Assistant.

The power cord connects to the left side of the back of the TV, with all other connectors on the right side, facing right. These include four HDMI ports (two 4K120, one eARC), two USB ports, a 3.5mm composite video input, a 3.5mm headphone jack, an optical audio output, an Ethernet port and an antenna/cable connector. Below the ports is a combo power/input button and remote mic mute switch.

The remote is a long, thin, rectangular black stick with nicely rounded ends. A large, circular gray navigation panel sits near the top, with power, settings, and Google Assistant buttons above it, along with a pinhole microphone. The menu buttons sit below the pad, with dedicated app buttons for Amazon Prime Video, Netflix, TCL Channel and YouTube below them. The right end of the remote control contains a volume button and a mute button.
While most TCL smart TVs use the Roku TV platform, the 55R646 uses Google TV for its interface. Google TV is a streamlined version of the Android TV platform on Hisense TVs, keeping all of its features, with a menu system that’s more focused on content than driven primarily by a selection of apps. All the big names in streaming are available, including Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV, Disney+, HBO Max, Hulu, Netflix, Twitch and YouTube. Google TV also supports Google Cast for mirroring to your Android smartphone or tablet or a Chrome browser tab from a computer, although it doesn’t support Apple AirPlay like Roku TVs (Roku TVs don’t support Google Cast, however).
Google TV also provides full access to the Google Assistant voice assistant, which you can use by saying “Hey Google,” thanks to the 55R646’s built-in far-field microphone array. It’s a welcome trend that has forced some Hisense and Sony TVs in recent years, before voice assistant integration required almost exclusively talking to the remote. And if you don’t feel comfortable with a microphone always listening for your wake-up phrase, you can simply disable the microphone with the switch on the back.
Google Assistant remains a very capable voice assistant, capable of answering general questions like the weather and sports scores, searching for content to watch, and directly controlling the TV itself and any compatible smart home device. This can be extremely useful, especially for hands-free voice control.

The TCL 55R646 is a 4K TV with a 120Hz refresh rate. It supports high dynamic range (HDR) content in HDR10, HDR10+, Dolby Vision and hybrid log gamma (HLG).
We test TVs using a Klein K-80 colorimeter (opens in a new window), a Murideo SIX-G signal generator (opens in a new window) and Portrait Displays’ Calman software (opens in a new window) using a methodology based on of Imaging Science Foundation calibration techniques (opens in new window).
Like many TVs, the 55R646 has an adaptive mode that tries to automatically adjust picture settings based on what’s being displayed. This mode is activated automatically and applies to every picture mode you use. We recommend turning this feature off when watching movies to get the most accurate picture based on the director’s intent, and disabling them ourselves when performing our tests.

The graph above shows the color levels of the 55R646 in film mode with an SDR signal compared to Rec.709 broadcast standards and with an HDR signal compared to DCI-P3 digital cinema standards. The 55R646 performs fantastically here, with accurate whites and balanced colors in both SDR and HDR. A near-perfect SDR image out of the box, with slightly undersaturated greens and yellows and magentas that are slightly warm as the only (very minor) complaints. The HDR image is also excellent, covering almost the entire DCI-P3 color space despite slightly desaturated greens and yellows. All colors are properly balanced and not skewed significantly in any direction, except for cyans, which pass with just a hint of green, with blues, magentas, reds, and yellows all speckled.
Looks great on the 55R646. The greens of the plants and the blues of the water look vivid and natural, with very subtle color variations. Fine details such as fur and bark appear sharp in both direct sunlight and shade.
It’s similarly impressive to the 55R646, with the red of Deadpool’s suit looking vibrant and accurate in the dark early scenes of the film. The flames in the burning lab battle look bright and prominent, while shadow detail in the same shot is still visible without looking washed out.
Show off the excellent contrast of the 55R646. The cuts and outlines of the black suits can be clearly seen and still look dark even with the bright white balloons, lights and shirts in the same frame. Skin tones look natural against stark black and white, and various splashes of color in scenes stand out well.
