We have selected the following discs from the hundreds available so far. These movies don’t just show off your TV’s capabilities, they look great too. (Well, we liked them, at least).
All of these titles include a 4K disc as well as a standard 1080p Blu-ray copy in the package. To watch the 4K version you’ll need a 4K TV and a 4K Blu-ray player, such as the Sony UBP-X800. All 4K discs also include HDR (high dynamic range) information, and when viewed on an HDR-compatible TV, they can look better than standard Blu-ray.
4K movies don’t have to be all about explosions and boats, and this Korean homegrown thriller is a great showcase for the weird side of cinema. This film offers shades of Old Boy, as well as Bong Joon-ho’s previous The Host, both quiet color paintings and themes of isolation and family. It’s as fun as it gets.
Russian Ark was one of the first “track-shooters dressed up as movies” and had a show. 1917 joins the Russian Ark as a masterpiece in this form of filmmaking, although the story is two soldiers running from point A to point B. The centerpiece is a sequence set in a ruined city with flames flying overhead. title (part. 13) ), which serves as an excellent test for your TV’s contrast levels.

Martin Scorsese’s The Irishman may have made a splash at the 2020 Oscars (but without the actual awards), and yet the film helped remind us why we love his films. Casino may be one of the director’s lesser-known films, but it offers good scores and hot performances from an excellent cast. The 4K update offers incredible HDR effects, especially for the neon canyons of Las Vegas, with a cleaner image than other recent releases like The Shining or Black Hawk Down.
We here have used Black Hawk Down as a touchstone in our radio labs for many years, so we were excited at the prospect of a 4K/Dolby Atmos version. And what do you know? That’s all we could hope for. Yes, it’s still a great looking film, but the image has been enhanced in many ways, including the addition of some HDR effect features. But the most interesting is the sound mix: this movie shows why Dolby Atmos should be called the “helicopter effects channel”. The sounds of the Somali markets surround you as Black Hawks full of guards fly overhead. This disc is a new reference.
It’s one of two live-action movies on this list, but Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is its own thing. You may have seen superhero origin stories or other animated movies before, but you’ve never seen anything like this. It looks like a comic book, but it’s the most amazing comic book you’ve ever seen. There’s HDR…and then there’s this movie. With a great story, lots of interesting characters and excellent Atmos sound, this is one of the best Bu-ray 4K discs.
Forget everything you know about sequels made 30 years after the original. Blade Runner 2049 is the rare remake that improves upon the original film. This artwork is made to be displayed on a 4K UHD TV. Of all the movies on this list, if you’re a sci-fi fan, this is the disc you should buy first. You will need a home theater or good headphones for this movie, because you will want to play it.
Gladiator: 4k Ultra Hd Blu Ray Review
When it comes to female revenge movies that pretend to be crazy, they don’t come bigger, louder, or funnier than Mad Max: Fury Road. There’s no real story, or much dialogue—it’s like a two-hour ride with a promise of redemption at the end.
The HDR results range from subtle to garish (especially when it comes to the “fire-throwing guitar”), but as you’d expect they enhance an already heavily shot and directed action film.
Not as glamorous as some of the movies here. But despite its washed-out color palette, the visuals are crisp and the film has 4K resolution in a way that most films don’t. Throw in some awesome suspense and great sound and you have a classic home theater game. In terms of visual storytelling, Dunkirkis is the new benchmark.
The poster child for potential 4K movies, The Revenant is one of the most beautiful movies we’ve ever seen. Image quality is impeccable and both the extended color palette and dynamic range are on display. Put it on the biggest screen you can afford and turn up the volume.

If there’s one title that stands out from other 4K releases recently, it’s the BBC’s Planet Earth II. Shot mostly in 4K and complete with HDR effects, the latest installment in the series features all the stunning visuals you’d expect from the award-winning team behind Originals and Lifetime. And, yes, it’s narrated by David Attenborough.
From the opening shot of a sloth swimming through a mangrove to a great shot of ants eating tadpoles, photography can be fun at times. If you want to show off your TV’s ability to deliver color and detail, this is the disc.
A beautifully crafted film in terms of visuals and story, Wonder Woman is the superhero movie we had to have on this list. The special effects are used wisely, right up until the end of the film, while HDR gives a real boost to scenes like Steve Trevor’s interview with the Lasso of Truth. Of course, some of the scenes suffer from movie grain, including, oddly enough, the opening CGI sequence, but overall, this is the first story you need in your collection.
There is one thing that the Mission Impossible franchise has been missing for years. And no, I don’t mean 4K HDR – Mission Impossible 1, 2 and Rogue Nation were all released in 4K. The missing word is “fun” and Mission Impossible: Fallout is full of it.
K Uhd Blu Ray Box Set Review: ‘indiana Jones: 4 Movie Collection’ (2021)
From the first minutes you see the iconic self-destruct message and the exciting parachute sequence in the middle of an electrical storm. The film’s 4K image looks clean and the HDR effect serves the story rather than surprising you.
Well, so Robert Downey, Jr. it seems like it could be somewhere else, but of the three Avengers movies so far, this one is the most obvious and the most mind-blowing. If you saw it in the cinema it is worth watching it at home in HDR, because this is it
Marvel movies may be a dime a dozen these days, but Black Panther is no CGI-fest by the numbers. It has something to say, and it says it in an entertaining and charming way. The world of Black Panther is filled with two real characters and visuals that have won Oscars for both costuming and production design. RIP Chadwick Boseman.
If ever there was a record that will make you shake your head in wonder at how good 4K movies can look, The Big Showmanis is it. It offers amazing picture quality and well controlled HDR results. The story can be a little hokey, but it is forgivable as a way to put out songs that are very catchy. Hugh Jackman’s weird makeup and smooth pacific accent detracts a bit from the show. But what a show. This UHD 4K Blu-ray is one of the best reasons to buy a 4K TV.

Put aside its cynical plot and silly heroes and watch the eighth film in the series for what it is: an adorable popcorn flick. Like Blade Runner 2049, The Last Jedi relies on dramatic set pieces, including the fight in the throne room (seen in HDR) and the final battle on Crait. While every Star Wars film has been available in 4K, this was the first.
Is Water Quality Worth a School Award? Everyone has their own opinion, but this movie is better than anything director Guillermo Del Toro has done since Pan’s Labyrinth. It’s a charming and tender film, unlike anything the great man has ever worked on. With its romantic sentiment and Parisian feel, it’s like a love letter to filmmaker Jean-Pierre Jeunet (who accused Del Toro of removing the scene from Delicatessen). Like most fairy tales, The Shape of Water features moments of shocking violence and some tenderness.
