Update 3g London Review – The company’s S-Line King joins a handful of good 5G phones in the UK, but is only for big phone fans

The Galaxy S10 5G is the biggest, most advanced and most expensive smartphone in Samsung’s current lineup, and it doesn’t just claim to have 5G, it’s the best.

Unlike the OnePlus 7 Pro, which comes in 4G or 5G versions, which are similar in size, weight and features, the S10 5G is its own phone. It’s bigger, heavier, thicker and has more cameras and sensors on the back and front than the S10+.

The front is filled with a 6.7-inch QHD+ AMOLED screen that curves at the sides and has a large oval notch on the top right of the display for the dual selfie cameras and depth sensor.

The screen is truly stunning, as you’d expect from Samsung’s best smartphone: clear, bright and colorful with good viewing angles. It’s not as bright or smooth as the amazing 90Hz screen on the OnePlus 7 Pro, but it’s better than the rest.

The bigger screen means the S10 5G is a bigger phone. At 77.1mm wide and 162.6mm tall, the S10 5G compares favorably to 5G rivals like the OnePlus 7 Pro or the 4G-only iPhone XS Max. But the narrowing of the back to the sides and the relatively light weight of 198g, which dwarfs the competition by 8-10g, make the S10 5G almost manageable. I could fit it in a men’s jeans pocket, but everything was a small struggle.

If you don’t want big phones and the negatives that come with them, such as weight, price, size, one-handed use, this is definitely not for you.

The display hides Samsung’s ultrasonic fingerprint scanner with your finger on the screen to unlock the phone, which works well enough, but isn’t as fast or accurate as the optical sensor on the OnePlus 7 Pro 5G or traditional fingerprint sensors.

The phone is water resistant to the international IP68 standard, or in fresh water for 30 minutes at a depth of 1.5 meters. Throw the S10 5G in the toilet and you can flush it. It also has a headphone jack, which is rare in 2019.

The Galaxy S10 5G has the same processor, storage and memory as the other Galaxy S10 variants and therefore performs similarly. In the US this means the Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 processor, but in the UK, Europe and many other regions it means Samsung’s own Exynos 9820 processor.

It’s a phone that feels fast, if not super fast, and can handle most things you throw at it. The 5G-powered gaming and augmented reality experience was smooth, but the phone did heat up a bit.

The S10 5G has the largest battery in Samsung’s S10 line of phones, so it lasts 36 hours between charges. With the screen set to FHD+ resolution by default and Always-On Display (AOD) turned off, the phone ran from 7am on the first day to 7pm on the second day, mostly Vodafone’s new 5G network with a burst on 4G. Available in London.

The S10 5G charges faster than other Samsung phones with a 25W charger included in the box. It reached 90% in an hour, which is still not the fastest charging phone, but a significant improvement over other Samsung devices. Up to 15W wireless charging works well with a Qi charging mat, and wireless power sharing charges other things like the Samsung Galaxy Buds on the back of the S10 5G.

The S10 5G performed well on Vodafone’s new 5G network, which is significantly faster than 4G when available, with 200 in areas where Vodafone’s 4G network regularly reaches around 20-50 Mbps. Mbps download speed is managed.

But the S10 5G’s 4G performance on the Vodafone network was poor, with the OnePlus 7 Pro and Huawei P30 Pro taking longer to downgrade to 3G in areas with a strong 4G signal on the same Vodafone 4G network. This issue was particularly problematic in public transport.

This poor performance led to further tests, which showed that the poor signal performance on Vodafone’s 4G network was not in Samsung’s new 5G phone, but in its regular 4G phones, including the Galaxy S10. Only 4G phones had less than half a load of signal strength compared to their 5G counterparts on the same network.

However, when Samsung phones were downgraded to 3G, their internet connection became useless, causing everything from websites and apps to messages and even emails to lag. But it’s worse than being offline because the phone thinks the internet connection is working, leading to a very frustrating scenario where the phone repeatedly tries to complete the task you’re doing before timing out after a minute. set up .

Specifically, the Samsung S10, S10+ and S10e performed well with the OnePlus 7 Pro and Huawei P30 Pro (the top two for network performance) on 4G in and around London and southern England. The problem appeared only on Vodafone. But neither Vodafone nor Samsung could explain the signal problems that the Samsung S10 5G and other S10 smartphones are facing.

A Vodafone spokesperson said: “We have returned the device and SIM card for internal testing. We welcome the opportunity for patrons to walk through the areas they have seen to better understand the user experience we have uncovered. So we can better understand each issue and make corrections or improvements.

A Samsung spokesperson declined to address the 4G issue, instead saying, “As 5G network coverage improves and expands, the 5G user experience will continue to improve. Samsung is working closely with our partners To provide device updates so customers can get better network performance.

Samsung’s One UI is nice, but its gesture navigation options are difficult to use with one hand on a screen this size. Photo: Samuel Gibbs/The Guardian

The Galaxy S10 5G runs on Samsung’s new One UI version of Android 9 Pie, like other S10 variants.

The UI is a big upgrade over previous versions of Samsung’s software, which was intended to make large-screen phones more user-friendly, and it comes in handy here. The top of the screen is usually used to display information, while the buttons you need to touch are moved to the bottom.

The only thing that hasn’t aged well is Samsung’s gesture navigation options, which replace the traditional three-button navigation bar at the bottom of the screen with swipe pads where the buttons are. It’s not a fluid experience, and it’s difficult to use one hand on a screen this size.

While more useful for the larger Galaxy S10+, the S10 typically uses the top half of the phone for viewing information and the bottom half for touch interactions. Competing systems from OnePlus, Huawei or even Google’s upcoming Android Q devices are much better.

The Galaxy S10 5G has the same three regular cameras on the back as the S10 and S10+, but adds a 3D depth camera for good measure.

That means you get a 12-megapixel primary camera, a 12-megapixel telephoto camera, and a 16-megapixel ultra-wide-angle camera that offers 0.5 to 2x zoom, followed by 10x hybrid zoom.

There wasn’t much difference between the cameras on the S10 5G and the S10/S10+. Despite the new night mode, it produced great photos in good light, strong but not class-leading in low light.

Video capture was excellent, better than most competitors, amazing depth effects with additional sensors on the S10 5G. The selfie camera is the same as the S10+, which is great.
