The Huawei E5372 is an elongated portable 4G router in the typical Huawei style, which is not bad because it is easy to throw in your bag or to keep in your pocket. The battery-powered E5372 accepts a full-size data SIM card, but you can use an adapter to fit a smaller SIM card. You can also install a microSD card and share its content with other people on your network, as long as its capacity does not exceed 32 GB.

Although the E5732 provides network connectivity on both the 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands, it cannot provide both at the same time, so you have to choose one or the other. If you are using one device with the router, such as an iPad, you can select the preferred band and leave it at that, but if you are going to let multiple people connect to the E5732 with different devices, it is easier to leave it set to the band of 2.4GHz for maximum compatibility.

The manual is sparse on information that only helps you physically set up the E5372 and connect a laptop, tablet, or other device to it, although the web interface of the device itself has more detailed instructions.
The setup is easy and similar to how you normally set up a cell phone. Remove the back of the device, insert the SIM card and the microSD card, and then insert the battery. It took 25 seconds for the E5732 to start up and connect to the Three network, which is an acceptable amount of time. Meanwhile, Huawei claims that the 1,780mAh battery will last up to six hours depending on the network used. The standard E5372 Wi-Fi network name (SSID) and Wi-Fi password are written on the paper that comes in the box and on the inside of the back cover of the E5732. Worryingly, you can also see the network password on the E5372’s display, and while that’s not a problem if the device is kept in a bag or pocket, it’s not so comforting if the device is lost. or stolen. Unfortunately, you cannot stop the display of the password.

We had no problem getting a 4G signal in our central London office, and the router switched seamlessly to 3G when we returned to our suburban property or ventured further afield. It is important to remember that the actual download speed may be faster, but it is limited by the transfer speed from the router to your device. However, we did the same test in a 3G area and saw much faster download speeds, which were around the 10Mbps mark, with a maximum speed of 14.5Mbps.
The web interface of the E5372 is well built and easy to understand. Granted, the web interface doesn’t have as many options as a regular router, but there you can still set up port forwarding and set up a DMZ.

Unfortunately, you can’t access the installed microSD card via SMB for easy drag and drop and so on, you can only access files via the web interface of the E5372. You use an FTP-style menu to navigate the contents of the microSD card, and it’s pretty quick, but it’s not as easy a way to access files as an SMB connection, and it’s a shame there’s no media server feature so you can access your music and videos through the media player.
Helpfully, the E5372’s web interface displays a progress bar that shows how much data is already stored on the microSD card and how much space you have left. You can allow people to download and upload from their computers on the network, or you can restrict access to the microSD card to the USB connection, or disable it completely.
The Huawei E5756 is an older router that’s no longer available on Three, but in some ways we prefer it. You can access the data SIM card and microSD card more easily with the E5756, and the display does not allow you to see the Wi-Fi password for the device. Nevertheless, the E5732 is a great device that makes it easy to share your mobile internet connection with your friends or family, whether you’re at home, on the road or in the car. We didn’t experience great 4G speeds with the device on the Three network, but it has some nice features and is easy to use. However, we think the 3G TP-Link M5350 is a good alternative if you just want to share your internet connection, especially if you don’t live or work in a 4G area. So now we have the 3 Value MiFi, at the heart of which is the Huawei E5331 Mobile Wi-Fi Device. Like its more expensive sibling, the excellent Three Premium MiFi, offers HSPA 21.1Mbit compatibility, connects up to five devices simultaneously and has 30 minutes less battery life at 4.5 hours. More radically, the 3 Value MiFi ditches the detailed three-line premium OLED display in favor of five simple LED icons, but aims to make up for it by costing 40 per cent less at just £50 .
So does the argument make sense? Outside the box we are not convinced. While the Premium MiFi is a more feature-rich device, it takes up a smaller footprint (95.5 x 49mm vs 92.8 x 60mm), although slightly thicker (49mm vs 60mm) and weighs 80g, it’s five grams lighter. We also have issues with the build quality of the Value MiFi. The white finish is more susceptible to marks, and there’s a rough joint between the device and its removable back cover that feels cheap.
On the connectivity front, the 3 Value MiFi has fallen victim to the reduction as it loses the 32GB Premium MiFi compatible microSD slot that allows this model to function as a memory stick when connected to a computer. At the same time, the move to a basic display of icons (network strength, Wi-Fi signal, battery and new mail) leaves out key information that could prove costly in the long run, such as the roaming indicator and the amount of data downloaded. Also, the green or orange color system of each icon, indicating strong or weak, gives the user a somewhat binary level of information compared to the Premium MiFi health bars.
There is one more unpleasant complication. While the Premium MiFi has a dedicated security button that displays its SSID and WiFi key, the Value MiFi only has a power button, so you need to remove the back cover and battery and record the information elsewhere to get this information.

All of this sounds like a lot of negatives, but in reality, the MiFi Value is far from a bad product. Setup is easy, just insert the SIM card and turn it on. It connects to the Internet automatically and you can add devices and start. For those who prefer to dig a little deeper, type the device’s IP address (192.168.1.1) into a browser and the web interface will display detailed signal strength, data usage and the connected devices. You can also access SMS sent over the network, check for firmware updates, and change the SSID, password, and authentication type (WPA, WPA2, and AES TKIP encryption supported).
In terms of performance, the 3 Value MiFi is no slouch either. As always when testing mobile Wi-Fi, it’s important to remember that doing it in real life isn’t an exact science. The network load will vary from area to area, from day to day and even from minute to minute, while each network has different coverage black points. Of course, always use the carrier’s coverage checker program to check how much coverage you have at home and/or at your office before you buy.
