Samsung has not one, but two phones competing for the top camera of 2020. The Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra is a photography beast, but the Galaxy S20 Ultra is also a photography beast. These two flagships from the same company have a lot in common when it comes to their cameras, but there are also a lot of differences. Can the upgraded specs of the newest Note 20 Ultra make it stand out? This is what we aim to prove in the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra vs Galaxy S20 Ultra camera.
On the surface, it looks like the two phones share almost the same camera specs. For example, both have a 108MP main sensor and each shooter has the same 12MP ultra-wide sensor. The focus system is very different.
The Note 20 Ultra has a laser autofocus system, which is used to avoid problems created by the S20 Ultra’s time-lapse camera. Another point where the two phones differ is the TV picture. The Note 20 Ultra has a conservative 12MP telephoto sensor with 5x optical and 50x hybrid zoom, while the S20 Ultra has a 48MP telephoto sensor with 4x optical and 100x hybrid zoom.

If there is a difference in the way of these cameras, it will zoom. Video recording capabilities are the same with 8K at 24fps for the main camera and 4K at 60fps for the front camera. Here are the details:
Let’s start with shooting indoors. Here we can see a different white balance of course. The Note 20 Ultra gets it right, while the S20 Ultra skews a little too much in the warm direction. Focus is also better on the Note 20 Ultra. You can see the details on the panel a little easier in the shot than the Note 20 Ultra.
Here are two photos taken at 108MP. What strikes me about these images is the visible detail in the brick, which is good in both shots. You can see the outline of each brick. The Note 20 Ultra took slightly brighter images that looked more natural. The S20 Ultra shots are slightly darker and show higher contrast. I like the shot better than the Note 20 Ultra in this comparison.
These HDR samples show what both phones can achieve. The sun was overhead and I stood in the shadow cast by the train trellis. Overall picture quality is good. Again, though, the Note 20 Ultra gets it really right. There is more detail visible under the bridge and the sky is more beautiful, a rich shade of blue (if only slightly so). There is less detail in the shadows in photos taken with the S20 Ultra.

In this example, I think we have a dead heat. Color representation, white balance and overall tone are equal. There may be more detail in the shot than the Note 20 Ultra, but it’s small enough not to be a factor in the decision. I like the consistency here from Samsung.
This is the first shot where I think the S20 Ultra is the clear winner. There is noise in the images from both cameras, but the noise from the Note 20 Ultra is more annoying. The S20 Ultra takes cleaner, richer images overall. I especially like the color, which is more true to life.
I was a little disappointed with these photos. Both were facing the eastern sun, which was behind the light clouds. You can see the loss of detail in the center of the frame. Shots from the Note 20 Ultra are more accurate, while shots from the S20 Ultra are richer in color detail. It comes down to personal preference, I think. This is a tough call.
These two photos are very close. Sky and water are exposed in each, with approx. Where the Note 20 Ultra steps up is in the dark areas, where you can make out a few houses on the other side of the lake. The S20 Ultra misses out on the same details.

This selfie example is a study in contrast. The Note 20 Ultra captured cooler images with higher contrast, while the S20 Ultra sample was warmer. I especially like how shots from the S20 Ultra show some natural bokeh in the background, although some users may want the entire frame in focus. It’s a good pair of selfies.
For selfies, then, we can see the same color problem as traditional selfies. I think the edge detection is equal between the two phones, with the right trim. Even around my hair. I’m not going to call a winner here. These are great shots from the phone’s selfie camera that avoid looking fake.
In this comparison, it’s the Note 20 Ultra that looks warmer and a bit oversaturated in these shots with some flowers. The sample from the S20 Ultra is cleaner and looks more natural. There is a lot of detail in both images.
This series of photos looks at the wide, standard and portrait lenses of both phones. Exposures from the wide-angle camera look the same, as they should, since they are taken from the same sensor. The standard 1x image shows the same color issues from the S20 Ultra that we’ve seen throughout this series, as well as the 2x and 5x shots. All images are clear, with less noise. In this series, I like the Note 20 Ultra’s image better except for the 5x screen. The S20 Ultra clearly overestimates the green, but overall the picture just looks rich.

The Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra camera took a lot of heat when it was first released. It has focus issues and tends to use an overly warm color balance in many images. Since the sensor for the main and ultra-wide cameras is the same on both cameras, it’s clear that Samsung has improved its processing. The shots from the Note 20 Ultra are sharp and very accurate. They may not have the fantastic color saturation of shots from the S20 Ultra, but in this case, we think the accuracy is better. Overall, we give the Note 20 Ultra a win, if only by a hair.
